Everyone makes mistakes at times.
One day, Zisi recommended a man named Gou Bian to the ruler of the State
of Wei for the position of general. Although Gou Bian was not a flawless
individual, Zisi judged that he possessed the exceptional ability
and talent required of a general to defend the state.
However, Wei Hou refused to appoint Qu Bian, citing a past transgression:
he recalled that before entering official service, Qu Bian had stolen and
eaten two eggs belonging to a commoner while collecting taxes.
Accordingly, the company offered the following counsel to Duke Wei:
"Appointing people is akin to a carpenter working with wood.
A skilled carpenter does not discard an entire piece of valuable
timber simply because a small section is rotten."
It is a method of cutting away the rotten parts while preserving the good qualities,
thereby utilizing the material as fine timber. "How could you cast aside a talent
capable of defending the nation over a mere two eggs?"
Wei Hou accepted the advice of the provincial governor and appointed Qiu
Bian as a general; just as the governor had anticipated, Qiu Bian successfully
defended the State of Wei and fulfilled his mission.
Everyone makes mistakes and experiences failure. No one is perfect; we all live with
weaknesses and flaws. A society preoccupied with seeking out and criticizing the faults of others
is one that shuts the door to its own future. A perspective that helps refine our shortcomings
and unlock our potential is the very force that propels us toward a better tomorrow.
Do not expose the faults of others or speak of them to anyone else.
Do not meddle in the way others speak or behave. Instead, examine your own speech,
conduct, and shortcomings for any errors, and correct them yourself.
