Fishermen net bag stashed with yen off Japan coast

TOKYO (AP) -- A fishing boat netted a bag packed with cash worth 11 million yen ($145,000) off Japan's northeastern coast, a catch probably swept away in the tsunami seven months ago.

A trawler pulled the bag with more than 1,000 notes worth 10,000-yen ($130) from the bottom of the sea on Oct. 8 near Ofunato city in Iwate state, city official Kou Ueno said.

``We think it is related to the disaster as no one is going to throw this kind of thing away on purpose,'' Ueno told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Saturday.

Other safes and cash-filled envelopes have been found and reported to authorities since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake set off a giant tsunami that left about 20,000 people dead or missing from Japan's northeast coast in March.

If no one claims the cash in the latest find in six months, the money will go to the finders, although a legal ruling may be necessary to determine whether the captain of the ship, the crew or the ship's owner is the true finder, Ueno said.

Some information about the bag and its contents are being kept secret to allow the city to determine whether anyone who comes forward is the rightful owner, he added.

일본 지방자치단체 화장실에서 동일본대지진 이재민을 위해 써달라는 내용의 편 지와 함께 거액이 잇따라 발견되며 찬바람 부는 열도를 훈훈하게 덥혔다.

28일 현지 언론에 따르면 아오모리(靑森)현 하치도(八戶)시는 시청사 화장실에 서 현금 4천만엔과 편지가 담긴 비닐봉지를 발견했다고 발표했다.

환경미화원이 27일 시청사 별관 1층의 다목적 화장실 내 의자 위에서 발견한 검 은색 비닐봉지 안에는 1만 엔권 4천장과 편지가 들어 있었다.

편지에는 '동일본대지진 이재민들을 위해 써달라'거나 대지진 피해를 본 도호쿠 (東北) 지방의 아오모리•이와테(岩手)•미야기(宮城)•후쿠시마(福島)현에 1천만 엔씩 나누어 주라는 내용이 담겨 있었다. 발신인은 '도호쿠인(東北人)'이라고 적혀 있었고, 수신인은 하치도시 시장이었다.

나라오카 슈이치(奈良岡修一) 부시장은 기자회견에서 "재해 복구를 위해 노력하 는 이들에게 커다란 힘이 될 것"이라며 해당 지역에 돈을 전달하겠다고 약속했다.

일본에서는 지난해 연말과 올해 초에 만화 '타이거마스크'의 주인공 다테 나오토 (伊達直人)의 이름을 내세운 이들의 익명 기부가 이어졌다.

지난달에는 사이타마(埼玉)현 사카도(坂戶)시 시청 화장실에서 "저는 혼자 사는 사람입니다. 도호쿠 사람들을 위해 써주세요"라는 메모와 함께 현찰 1천만 엔을 담은 비닐봉지가 발견됐다. (연합뉴스)
