알렉스 퍼거슨이 쌓아온 위대한 커리어의 최종편으로, 진정한 축구매니지먼트를 실현해 보인 1996년부터 지금까지의 모습을 살펴보기로 한다.

1996년 더블을 달성한 퍼거슨은 1996-97 프리미어리그 시즌에도 집중력을 잃지 않았고, 결국에는 또 한 번의 우승을 이끌어냈다. 그러나 유럽 무대에서의 활약은 여전히 문제였다. 보루시아 도르트문트와의 챔피언스리그 4강전 2경기를 모두 0-1로 패해 결승 진출의 문턱에서 무너졌기 때문이었다.

그 시즌의 끝에도 좋지 않은 일이 일어났다. 퍼거슨은 자신이 가장 아끼던 스타 플레이어를 잃은 안타까움을 겪어야 했다. 31번째 생일을 앞둔 에릭 칸토나가 갑작스러운 은퇴를 선언했던 것이다.

칸토나는 퍼거슨 축구의 핵심으로 활약해 왔으며, 26년 동안 이어졌던 맨유의 무관 역사를 끝낼 수 있게 해준 장본인이었다. 칸토나는 1996년의 더블 당시에도 대단한 활약을 펼쳤었다.

칸토나를 대체한다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 그래서 퍼거슨은 토트넘으로부터 테디 셰링험을 영입했는데, 사실 셰링험은 칸토나보다도 나이가 많은 선수였다!

셰링험의 영입은 매우 성공적이었지만, 셰링험조차도 맨유의 타이틀을 지켜내지는 못했다. 당시 아스날의 전력이 너무나도 강했던 탓이었다.

1998년 여름 퍼거슨은 2개의 빅딜을 만들어냈고, 이 영입은 다음 해에 이뤄낸 트레블에 커다란 힘이 됐다. 그 주인공들은 야프 스탐과 드와이트 요크였다. 그러나 사람들은 퍼거슨이 요크에게 왜 그렇게 많은 돈을 투자했는지 이해하지 못했다.

요크는 앤디 콜과 함께 엄청난 콤비 플레이를 선보였고, 솔샤르와 셰링험이 그들의 뒤를 지켰다. 퍼거슨은 톱슬래스의 공격수를 4명이나 보유했던 것이다. 여전히 퍼거슨은 그때와 같이 최고 수준의 스트라이커 4명을 보유하고 싶어한다. 아마도 그는 그 꿈을 다시 이루기 위해 이번 여름을 기다리고 있을 것 같다.

트레블의 첫 시작은 프리미어리그였다. 맨유는 시즌의 마지막 경기에서 토트넘을 물리쳤고, 아스날을 승점 1점 차로 따돌리며 트로피를 거머쥐었다. 

두 번째는 FA컵이었다 아스날과의 준결승에서 긱스의 환상적인 돌파에 이은 골로 2-1 승리를 거둔 맨유는 결승에서는 뉴캐슬을 2-0으로 가볍게 누르며 트레블에 한 걸음 더 다가섰다.

맨유는 챔피언스리그 결승에도 진출한 상태였다. 챔피언스리그에서는 로이 킨의 활약이 대단했다. 로이 킨은 준결승 유벤투스전에서 0-2의 스코어를 3-2로 뒤집는데 결정적인 수훈을 세웠다. 멋진 경기력으로 계속 된 승리를 이어나가던 맨유가 보여준 또 다른 스릴 넘치는 한 판이었다. 이는 마치 요즘의 맨유가 보여주는 축구와도 같았다.

챔피언스리그 결승전의 상대는 바이에른 뮌헨이었다. 맨유는 경고 누적으로 빠진 팀 내 최고 미드필더들이었던 로이 킨과 폴 스콜스 없이 뮌헨과 맞서야 했다. 뮌헨은 손쉽게 경기 초반의 리드를 잡았고, 맨유는 셰링험과 솔샤르가 들어오기 전까지는 패배의 문턱에 있는 듯 했다.

맨유는 인저리 타임에 터진 셰링험의 동점골과 솔샤르의 역전 골로 극적인 승리를 만들어냈다. 챔피언스리그 맨유-뮌헨전은 가장 놀라운 경기 중 하나로 여전히 팬들의 기억에 남아있다.  

셰링험과 솔샤르를 투입한 퍼거슨의 도박은 높은 인정을 받았다. 또한 지고 있는 경기를 이기기 위해 추가 실점마저 감수했던 과감한 전술은 퍼거슨의 커리어에 큰 도움이 됐다.

맨유는 2000년과 2001년에도 프리미어리그를 우승했지만, 퍼거슨은 2001-02 시즌이 끝나면 은퇴를 하겠다는 뜻을 발표했다. 퍼거슨의 은퇴 발표는 당시 맨유의 경기력에 상당한 영향을 줬고, 선수단 전체는 실망스러운 축구를 구사하기 시작했다. 그러자 퍼거슨도 마음을 돌려 감독직을 계속 수행하겠다고 말했다. 전반적인 상황을 봤을 때, 은퇴를 번복한 퍼거슨의 결정은 옳은 생각이었다고 평가된다.

그 해 맨유는 레버쿠젠과의 챔피언스리그 4강에서 패하며 결승 진출에 실패했다. 개인적으로는 챔피언스리그 결승전이 퍼거슨의 고향인 글래스고에서 열린다는 사실이 너무 많은 부담감을 안겨줬다고 생각한다.

2003년 퍼거슨은 프리미어리그를 또 다시 우승했고, 2004년 FA컵 결승에서는 밀월에 승리를 거뒀다. 2006년에는 위건을 누르며 리그컵 트로피도 거머쥐었다. 그러나 2004년과 2005년 맨유는 3위라는 성적을 거뒀는데, 당시 퍼거슨은 크리스티아누 호날두와 웨인 루니 같은 선수들을 영입하며 새로운 팀을 만들려고 시도했었다.

그는 평범한 선수들이었던 클레베르손과 에릭 젬바젬바 등을 영입하기도 했다. 하지만 항상 좋은 영입만을 해낼 수 있는 감독은 이 세상에 없다.

2006년 첼시에 이어 준우승에 머문 맨유는 그 이후에는 최고의 모습으로 되돌아왔다. 개인적인 생각이지만, 이러한 성공의 가장 큰 이유는 퍼거슨 감독이 선수들이 자유롭게 플레이 할 수 있도록 내버려뒀기 때문인 것 같다.

여러 명의 톱클래스 공격수들을 보유한 맨유는 승점 6점 차로 첼시를 제치며 또 한 번의 리그 우승을 이뤄냈다. 하지만 FA컵 결승에서는 아쉽게 패했다. 퍼거슨은 이번 시즌에도 좋은 선수 영입을 만들어냈고, 그가 맨유 감독으로서 치른 경기 수는 2,000번에 다가가고 있다.

나는 이렇게 좋은 팀을 갖고 있는 퍼거슨이 은퇴 계획을 갖고 있다고 생각하지 않는다. 또한 이번에는 은퇴 계획을 미리 발표를 해버리는 실수를 저지르지도 않을 것이 확실하다. 

퍼거슨은 스코틀랜드에서 수 많은 우승을 이뤄냈으며, 잉글랜드로 넘어온 후에는 멋진 축구를 구사하는 맨유의 전통을 이어가며 스코틀랜드 시절보다도 더 많은 트로피를 얻어냈다. 알렉스 퍼거슨은 영국 최고의 감독으로 거론되어 마땅한 명감독이 분명하다.

For the final part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s magnificent career, we look from 1996 to where he is today as one of the true greats of football management.

After winning the Double in 1996, Ferguson ensured his team did not lose focus in the Premier League as they won the title again in the 1996/97 season.

But success in Europe was still proving to be a problem as United lost to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals of the Champions League, with the German team winning both legs 1-0.

At the end of that season as well, Ferguson lost his big player when Eric Cantona made the surprise decision to retire just before his 31st birthday.

Cantona had been the key man in helping Ferguson to end United’s 26-year wait to win the title in the first place and he had also been such a big figure in winning the 1996 Double.

It was always going to be difficult to replace Cantona, so Ferguson signed Teddy Sheringham from Tottenham Hotspur and he was actually slightly older than Cantona!

Sheringham proved a very good signing by Ferguson, but he was unable to help United defend their title as Arsenal proved to be too strong.

In the summer of 1998, Ferguson made two big signings which went a long way to winning the Treble the following year.

Jaap Stam and Dwight Yorke were signed and, though many people were unsure why Ferguson spent so much money on Yorke, it was money well spent.

Yorke formed a superb partnership with Andy Cole, and with United also having Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as back-up, Ferguson had four top-class forwards.

Ferguson is still trying to get back to the situation of having four big strikers and I suppose it is something he may look at this summer.

The first leg of winning the Treble was the Premier League and United beat Tottenham on the final day of the season to win the title by a point from Arsenal.

The second leg was the FA Cup final and United easily beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley after a famous 2-1 win, with Ryan Giggs scoring a brilliant goal, in the semi-final against Arsenal.

United had also finally reached the Champions League final, largely due to Roy Keane’s performance in the semi-final against Juventus when United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
That was just one of a number of thrilling wins for United as they kept on winning games but also playing brilliant football – just as they are doing now.

In the Champions League final against Bayern Munich, United were without their two first-choice midfielders with Keane and Paul Scholes suspended.

Bayern took an early lead and it appeared as though United would lose until Ferguson brought on Sheringham and Solskjaer.

First Sheringham equalised and then Solskjaer scored a winner in injury-time, and it was one of the most remarkable games of all time.

Ferguson has to take credit for gambling with Sheringham and Solskjaer and the tactic of being prepared to lose by more goals in order to try to win a game you are losing is one that has served the manager well in his career.

United won the Premier League title again in 2000 and 2001 before Ferguson made the announcement that he would retire at the end of the 2001/02 season.

This affected United’s performances a lot and at this point they were playing some disappointing football as well.

Ferguson then changed his mind and said he would carry on as manager and, overall, it has to be said that it was a good decision.

United also lost in the semi-finals of the Champions League to Bayer Leverkusen and I think too much was made of the fact that season the final was played in Ferguson’s home city of Glasgow and it added a lot of pressure.

He won the league back in 2003, won the FA Cup against Millwall in 2004 and also the League Cup in 2006 against Wigan Athletic.

United did finish third in the league in 2004 and 2005 as Ferguson set about building up a new team after signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

He did sign some average players in Kleberson and Eric Djemba-Djemba, but there is not a manager in the world who has only made good buys.

After finishing runners-up to Chelsea in the league in 2006, United were back at their best last season and I think a big reason for this is that Ferguson just let his players go out and play.
With so many top-quality attacking players, United won the title by six points from Chelsea, although they did lose the FA Cup final.

Ferguson made more good signings for this current season and he is closing in on 2,000 matches as manager of United.

With such a good team at his disposal, I don’t think Ferguson has any plans to retire just yet, and he certainly won’t make the mistake of announcing it before he does it.

To sum up Sir Alex Ferguson, he has to be considered the best manager Britain has produced simply for the fact that he won so many trophies in Scotland before he came to England and won even more at United, where he also stuck by the club’s traditions of playing great football.
