미국 싱글 차트 6주간 1위, 디스코 차트 7주간 1위를 차지했고,

연말 결산 3위, 빌보드 역대 50년간 히트 곡 중 21위를 차지했다.

한때 애틀랜틱과 워너사의 최고 판매 1위곡이었다.

이 기록은 1990년 마돈나(Madonna)의 'Vogue'에 의해 깨졌다.

또한 1위에 올랐다가 두 번이나 떨어졌다 다시 1위에 오른 기록도 가지고 있다.

이 곡은 1977년 마지막 날 신년 이브에

당시 뉴욕 맨하튼 54번가에 있던 유명한 디스코텍 '스튜디오 54'에

입장도 못하고 쫓겨난 뒤 샴페인 몇 병 사 들고

근처에 있던 에드워즈의 아파트에서 기분도 풀 겸

시작한 잼 연주에서 태어났다 한다.

가사에 나오는 'to fifty four'는 당시 맨하튼 54번가에 있던

디스코텍 '스튜디오 54'를 가리킨다.
