[Autumn Essay]
Finding the Hidden Autumn
Choi Young-chan
Autumn has arrived, yet something feels strange. No matter where I look, I cannot seem to find it. The days are still hot, and people are still walking around in short sleeves. Perhaps autumn is playing hide-and-seek. So today, I decided to be “It” and go looking for autumn.
“Ready or not, here I come! I can see your hair!”
First, I looked at the trees. They were all green. Then, wait! There was a single yellow leaf hiding among the green ones. I went closer, but autumn was nowhere to be seen. It had simply changed the color of one leaf and slipped away. I asked the tree, “Have you seen autumn?” There was no answer. When the wind blew, the tree gently shook its leaves as if it knew nothing. “All right. You don't have to tell me. I'll find autumn myself.”
I turned my attention to the people walking along the road. Short sleeves, short sleeves, short sleeves…Ah! There was someone wearing long sleeves. I hurried over, but autumn was nowhere to be found. I asked the person, “Why are you the only one wearing long sleeves?” The person smiled and said, “The evening air is getting a little chilly, so I thought I'd wear this.” It seemed autumn had persuaded this person to keep its secret and then run away again.
This time, I decided to chase the wind. It came softly at first, then whistled past my ears. A coolness lingered on my cheeks. For a moment, the fresh scent of grass brushed against my nose. Autumn! I called out, “Are you there?” No answer. I followed the path the wind had taken. Tree branches swayed, and blades of grass danced in the breeze. I ran after them, but once again, autumn had escaped to somewhere else.
Suddenly, I heard a strange sound coming from the grass. Chirp, chirp. Chirp, chirp. A cricket! “Hey, little cricket, have you seen autumn?” The cricket pretended not to hear me and simply kept singing. Chirp, chirp. Chirp, chirp.
I opened my eyes wide and looked up at the sky. The sun was setting a little earlier than it had in summer. “Sky, have you seen autumn?” Again, no answer. The evening sky turned red, then quietly disappeared behind the mountains.
Suddenly, a leaf fell right in front of my feet. I quickly picked it up and shouted, “A fallen leaf! I found autumn!” At that very moment, I heard laughter from somewhere nearby. I looked around, but autumn was nowhere to be seen. “Where did you run off to this time?” Up ahead, the reeds were gently swaying. “Autumn, you're hiding there, aren't you?” I ran toward them. But autumn was gone.
Autumn is a master of hide-and-seek. It hides among the leaves, then escapes behind the wind. It hides inside long sleeves and gets the crickets to sing for it. It hides among the swaying reeds, leaving only the warm evening sunlight behind before running away again. But I'm not an easy opponent, either. I'm pretty good at finding things that are hiding. I can see every little clue autumn leaves behind: one yellow leaf, a cool breeze, the song of a cricket, a day that has grown a little shorter, and sleeves that have grown a little longer… There are simply too many traces of autumn to miss.
Then, as the evening breeze began to blow, I heard a tiny voice. “I'm over here!” I turned around. There it was. Autumn was peeking out from behind a yellow leaf, smiling shyly. “I found you!” I hurried toward it, but just as I was about to catch it, autumn rode away on the autumn breeze and disappeared again.
It looks like I'll be playing hide-and-seek with autumn for quite a while this year. And that's all right. Because whenever autumn hides, I'll keep chasing after it.
Come to think of it, autumn isn't the only one playing hide-and-seek. The seasons slowly change their appearance as they come closer to us. We simply fail to notice because we are too busy rushing through our lives. Perhaps what I have been chasing is not autumn itself, but the traces of autumn that I have passed by without noticing. If I gather those little traces one by one, perhaps, before I know it, autumn will have quietly found its way into my heart. So tomorrow, I plan to be “It” again and go looking for autumn.
“Autumn, hide and seek! I can see your hair!”
