Character Amnesia   인격기억상실증

중국의 젊은이들은 아름다운 전통 서예를 포함하여

한자 쓰는 법을 잊어가기 시작하는 것 같습니다.

It seems that young people in China are beginning

to forget how to write the characters that

comprise the beautiful calligraphy of their traditional language.

어떤 이들은 이런 현상을 “문자 기억 상실증”이라고 부릅니다.

Some are calling the phenomenon “character amnesia.”

컴퓨터와 스마트 폰의 과도한 사용으로 인하여 손으로 직접 쓰는 일이 도외시되어,

어떤 이들은 그들이 어렸을 때 배웠던 한자를 더 이상 기억할 수 없게 되었습니다.

Heavy usage of computers and smart phones often means

that writing is neglected and some can no longer remember

the characters they learned in childhood.

한 청년은 “자기 이름이나 주소 외에는 손으로 무언가를 쓰는 일이 없다”라고 합니다.

One young man said,

“People don’t write anything by hand anymore

except for [their] name and address.”

어떤 사람들은 다른 종류의

“문자(영어로 인격이라는 뜻도 있음) 기억상실증”을 갖고 있는 듯 합니다.

Some people appear to have “character amnesia”

of a different sort.

딜레마에 부딪쳤을 때에,

어떤 이들은 해야 할 올바른 일은 “잊어버리고”,

 대신 안이한 쉬운 길을 선택하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

When faced with a dilemma,

they seem to “forget” the right thing to do

and instead choose the easy way out.

하나님께서는 욥을

“순전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자더라”라고 했습니다.

God called Job

“a blameless and upright man,

one who fears God and shuns evil".

하나님은 사탄에게 욥의 자녀들, 재산, 그리고 건강 등

욥이 가진 모든 것을 빼앗아가도록 허락하였습니다.

God allowed Satan to take everything Job had

—his children, his wealth, and his health.

그러나 욥은 가슴이 찢어지는 상황에서도 하나님을 저주하지 않았습니다.

But despite his heart-wrenching circumstances,

Job refused to curse God.

“이 모든 일에 욥이 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님을 향하여 어리석게 원망하지 않으며”.

“In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong”.

욥의 성격에 흠이 없다는 하나님의 단언에 도전장을 내었던 사탄은

틀렸음이 증명된 것입니다.

Satan had challenged God’s assertion

of Job’s blameless character,

but he was proven wrong.

인격기억상실증이라니요?

Character amnesia?

인격이란 바로 우리 자신인 것이지, 우리가 “잊어버리는” 어떤 것이 아닙니다.

No. Character is who we are; it’s not something we “forget.”

인격을 잃어버린 사람들은 쉬운 길을 선택합니다.

Those who have a loss of character make a choice

Job 욥기 1:13-22  

[욥] 1:13	하루는 욥의 자녀들이 그 맏아들의 집에서 음식을 먹으며 포도주를 마실 때에 One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,
[욥] 1:14	사환이 욥에게 와서 아뢰되 소는 밭을 갈고 나귀는 그 곁에서 풀을 먹는데 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,
[욥] 1:15	스바 사람이 갑자기 이르러 그것들을 빼앗고 칼로 종들을 죽였나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다 and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
[욥] 1:16	그가 아직 말하는 동안에 또 한 사람이 와서 아뢰되 하나님의 불이 하늘에서 떨어져서 양과 종들을 살라 버렸나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
[욥] 1:17	그가 아직 말하는 동안에 또 한 사람이 와서 아뢰되 갈대아 사람이 세 무리를 지어 갑자기 낙타에게 달려들어 그것을 빼앗으며 칼로 종들을 죽였나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
[욥] 1:18	그가 아직 말하는 동안에 또 한 사람이 와서 아뢰되 주인의 자녀들이 그들의 맏아들의 집에서 음식을 먹으며 포도주를 마시는데 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,
[욥] 1:19	거친 들에서 큰 바람이 와서 집 네 모퉁이를 치매 그 청년들 위에 무너지므로 그들이 죽었나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다 한지라 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
[욥] 1:20	욥이 일어나 겉옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀고 땅에 엎드려 예배하며 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship
[욥] 1:21	이르되 내가 모태에서 알몸으로 나왔사온즉 또한 알몸이 그리로 돌아가올지라 주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다 하고 and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."
[욥] 1:22	이 모든 일에 욥이 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님을 향하여 원망하지 아니하니라 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

It isn’t the tranquil and placid seas That bring out the sailor’s skill; It’s the wind and waves that pound his ship And toss it about at will. When wealth is gone, little is lost; when health is gone, something is lost; but when character is gone, all is lost!

뱃사람의 솜씨가 나타나는 곳은 잔잔하고 평온한 바다가 아니라 배를 세게 치는 바람과 파도 속에서라네 재산을 잃으면 거의 잃지 않은 것이고, 건강을 잃었다면 조금 잃은 것이고, 인격을 잃었다면 모든 것을 잃은 것이다!
