Isaiah 40


Good News Translation


Words of Hope
40 “Comfort my people,” says our God. “Comfort them!
2 Encourage the people of Jerusalem.
Tell them they have suffered long enough
    and their sins are now forgiven.[a]
I have punished them in full for all their sins.”
3 A voice cries out,
“Prepare in the wilderness a road for the Lord!
    Clear the way in the desert for our God!
4 Fill every valley;
    level every mountain.
The hills will become a plain,
    and the rough country will be made smooth.
5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
    and all people will see it.
The Lord himself has promised this.”
6 A voice cries out, “Proclaim a message!”
“What message shall I proclaim?” I ask.
“Proclaim that all human beings are like grass;
    they last no longer than wild flowers.
7 Grass withers and flowers fade
    when the Lord sends the wind blowing over them.
    People are no more enduring than grass.
8 Yes, grass withers and flowers fade,
    but the word of our God endures forever.”
9 Jerusalem, go up on a high mountain
    and proclaim the good news!
Call out with a loud voice, Zion;
    announce the good news![b]
Speak out and do not be afraid.
Tell the towns of Judah
    that their God is coming!
10 The Sovereign Lord is coming to rule with power,
    bringing with him the people he has rescued.[c]
11 He will take care of his flock like a shepherd;
    he will gather the lambs together
    and carry them in his arms;
    he will gently lead their mothers.
Israel's Incomparable God
12 Can anyone measure the ocean by handfuls
    or measure the sky with his hands?
Can anyone hold the soil of the earth in a cup
    or weigh the mountains and hills on scales?
13 Can anyone tell the Lord what to do?
    Who can teach him or give him advice?
14 With whom does God consult
    in order to know and understand
    and to learn how things should be done?
15 To the Lord the nations are nothing,
    no more than a drop of water;
    the distant islands are as light as dust.
16 All the animals in the forests of Lebanon
    are not enough for a sacrifice to our God,
    and its trees are too few to kindle the fire.
17 The nations are nothing at all to him.
18 To whom can God be compared?
    How can you describe what he is like?
19 He is not like an idol that workers make,
    that metalworkers cover with gold
    and set in a base of silver.
20 Anyone who cannot afford silver or gold[d]
    chooses wood that will not rot.
He finds a skillful worker
    to make an image that won't fall down.
21 Do you not know?
    Were you not told long ago?
    Have you not heard how the world began?
22 It was made by the one who sits on his throne
    above the earth and beyond the sky;
    the people below look as tiny as ants.
He stretched out the sky like a curtain,
    like a tent in which to live.
23 He brings down powerful rulers
    and reduces them to nothing.
24 They are like young plants,
    just set out and barely rooted.
When the Lord sends a wind,
    they dry up and blow away like straw.
25 To whom can the holy God be compared?
    Is there anyone else like him?
26 Look up at the sky!
Who created the stars you see?
    The one who leads them out like an army,
    he knows how many there are
    and calls each one by name!
His power is so great—
    not one of them is ever missing!
27 Israel, why then do you complain
    that the Lord doesn't know your troubles
    or care if you suffer injustice?
28 Don't you know? Haven't you heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God;
    he created all the world.
He never grows tired or weary.
    No one understands his thoughts.
29 He strengthens those who are weak and tired.
30 Even those who are young grow weak;
    young people can fall exhausted.
31 But those who trust in the Lord for help
    will find their strength renewed.
They will rise on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not get weary;
    they will walk and not grow weak.

위로하여라, 위로하여라, 나의 백성을. ─ 너희의 하느님께서 말씀하신다. ─

예루살렘에게 다정히 말하여라. 이제 복역 기간이 끝나고 죗값이 치러졌으며 자기의 모든 죄악에 대하여 주님 손에서 갑절의 벌을 받았다고 외쳐라.

한 소리가 외친다. “너희는 광야에 주님의 길을 닦아라. 우리 하느님을 위하여 사막에 길을 곧게 내어라.
4
골짜기는 모두 메워지고 산과 언덕은 모두 낮아져라. 거친 곳은 평지가 되고 험한 곳은 평야가 되어라.
5
이에 주님의 영광이 드러나리니 모든 사람이 다 함께 그것을 보리라. 주님께서 친히 이렇게 말씀하셨다.”

한 소리가 말한다. “외쳐라.” “무엇을 외쳐야 합니까?” 하고 내가 물었다. “모든 인간은 풀이요 그 영화는 들의 꽃과 같다.

주님의 입김이 그 위로 불어오면 풀은 마르고 꽃은 시든다. 진정 이 백성은 풀에 지나지 않는다.

풀은 마르고 꽃은 시들지만 우리 하느님의 말씀은 영원히 서 있으리라.”

기쁜 소식을 전하는 시온아 높은 산으로 올라가라. 기쁜 소식을 전하는 예루살렘아 너의 목소리를 한껏 높여라. 두려워 말고 소리를 높여라. 유다의 성읍들에게 “너희의 하느님께서 여기에 계시다.” 하고 말하여라.

보라, 주 하느님께서 권능을 떨치며 오신다. 당신의 팔로 왕권을 행사하신다. 보라, 그분의 상급이 그분과 함께 오고 그분의 보상이 그분 앞에 서서 온다.

그분께서는 목자처럼 당신의 가축들을 먹이시고 새끼 양들을 팔로 모아 품에 안으시며 젖 먹이는 어미 양들을 조심스럽게 이끄신다.
하느님의 위대하심

누가 손바닥으로 바닷물을 되었고 장뼘으로 하늘을 재었으며 되로 땅의 먼지를 되었느냐? 누가 산들을 저울로 달고 언덕들을 천칭으로 달았느냐?
13
누가 주님의 영을 지도하였으며 누가 그분의 조언자가 되어 그분을 가르쳤느냐?
14
그분께서 누구와 의논하시어 깨우침을 받으셨고 누가 그분께 올바른 길을 가르쳐 드렸느냐? 누가 그분께 지식을 가르쳤으며 슬기의 길을 깨치시게 하였느냐?
15
보라, 민족들은 두레박에서 떨어지는 물 한 방울 같고 천칭 위의 티끌같이 여겨질 뿐. 진정 그분께서는 섬들도 먼지처럼 들어 올리신다.

레바논은 땔감으로도 모자라고 그곳 짐승들은 번제물로도 모자란다.

민족들 모두가 그분 앞에는 없는 것이나 마찬가지 그분께는 아무것도 아니며 헛것으로만 여겨진다.

너희는 하느님을 누구와 비교하겠느냐? 그분을 어떤 형상에 비기겠느냐?

우상이냐? 그것은 장인이 쇠를 부어 만들고 도금장이가 금으로 입혔으며 은사슬을 만들어 걸친 것이다.

너무 가난하여 이런 봉헌물을 마련할 수 없는 자는 썩지 않은 나무를 고르고 재주 있는 장인을 찾아내어 흔들리지 않는 우상을 만들게 한다.

너희는 알지 않느냐? 듣지 않았느냐? 처음부터 너희에게 알려지지 않았느냐? 땅의 기초가 세워질 때부터 그것을 깨닫지 않았느냐?

그분께서는 땅 위 궁창에 좌정하여 계시고 땅의 주민들은 메뚜기 떼와 같다. 그분께서는 하늘을 엷은 휘장처럼 펴시고 거기에 사시려고 천막처럼 쳐 놓으셨다.

그분께서는 지배자들을 없애 버리시고 세상의 통치자들을 허수아비처럼 만들어 버리신다.

그들이 심기기가 무섭게 그들의 씨가 뿌려지기가 무섭게 그들의 줄기가 땅에 뿌리를 내리기가 무섭게 그분께서 입김을 부시면 그들은 말라 버리고 폭풍이 그들을 지푸라기인 양 쓸어 가 버린다.

“너희는 나를 누구와 비교하겠느냐? 나를 누구와 같다고 하겠느냐?” 거룩하신 분께서 말씀하신다.

너희는 눈을 높이 들고 보아라. 누가 저 별들을 창조하였느냐? 그 군대를 수대로 다 불러내시고 그들 모두의 이름을 부르시는 분이시다. 그분께서는 능력이 크시고 권능이 막강하시어 하나도 빠지는 일이 없다.
신뢰를 가져라

야곱아, 네가 어찌 이런 말을 하느냐? 이스라엘아, 네가 어찌 이렇게 이야기하느냐? “나의 길은 주님께 숨겨져 있고 나의 권리는 나의 하느님께서 못 보신 채 없어져 버린다.”

너는 알지 않느냐? 너는 듣지 않았느냐? 주님은 영원하신 하느님 땅끝까지 창조하신 분이시다. 그분께서는 피곤한 줄도 지칠 줄도 모르시고 그분의 슬기는 헤아릴 길이 없다.

그분께서는 피곤한 이에게 힘을 주시고 기운이 없는 이에게 기력을 북돋아 주신다.

젊은이들도 피곤하여 지치고 청년들도 비틀거리기 마련이지만

주님께 바라는 이들은 새 힘을 얻고 독수리처럼 날개 치며 올라간다. 그들은 뛰어도 지칠 줄 모르고 걸어도 피곤한 줄 모른다.
