God's Assurance to Israel

41 God says,

“Be silent and listen to me, you distant lands!
    Get ready to present your case in court;
    you will have your chance to speak.
Let us come together to decide who is right.

2 “Who was it that brought the conqueror from the east[a]
    and makes him triumphant wherever he goes?
Who gives him victory over kings and nations?
    His sword strikes them down as if they were dust.
    His arrows scatter them like straw before the wind.
3 He follows in pursuit and marches safely on,
    so fast that he hardly touches the ground!
4 Who was it that made this happen?
    Who has determined the course of history?
I, the Lord, was there at the beginning,
    and I, the Lord, will be there at the end.

5 “The people of distant lands have seen what I have done;
    they are frightened and tremble with fear.
    So they all assemble and come.
6 The skilled workers help and encourage each other.
7 The carpenter says to the goldsmith, ‘Well done!’
    The one who beats the idol smooth
    encourages the one who nails it together.
They say, ‘The soldering is good’—
    and they fasten the idol in place with nails.

8 “But you, Israel my servant,
    you are the people that I have chosen,
    the descendants of Abraham, my friend.
9 I brought you from the ends of the earth;
    I called you from its farthest corners
    and said to you, ‘You are my servant.’
I did not reject you, but chose you.
10 Do not be afraid—I am with you!
    I am your God—let nothing terrify you!
I will make you strong and help you;
    I will protect you and save you.

11 “Those who are angry with you
    will know the shame of defeat.
Those who fight against you will die
12     and will disappear from the earth.
13 I am the Lord your God;
    I strengthen you and tell you,
    ‘Do not be afraid; I will help you.’”

14 The Lord says,

“Small and weak as you are, Israel,
    don't be afraid; I will help you.
I, the holy God of Israel, am the one who saves you.
15 I will make you like a threshing board,
    with spikes that are new and sharp.
You will thresh mountains and destroy them;
    hills will crumble into dust.
16 You will toss them in the air;
    the wind will carry them off,
    and they will be scattered by the storm.
Then you will be happy because I am your God;
    you will praise me, the holy God of Israel.

17 “When my people in their need look for water,
    when their throats are dry with thirst,
then I, the Lord, will answer their prayer;
    I, the God of Israel, will never abandon them.
18 I will make rivers flow among barren hills
    and springs of water run in the valleys.
I will turn the desert into pools of water
    and the dry land into flowing springs.
19 I will make cedars grow in the desert,
    and acacias and myrtles and olive trees.
Forests will grow in barren land,
    forests of pine and juniper and cypress.
20 People will see this and know
    that I, the Lord, have done it.
They will come to understand
    that Israel's holy God has made it happen.”

The Lord's Challenge to False Gods

21 The Lord, the king of Israel, has this to say:

“You gods of the nations, present your case.
    Bring the best arguments you have!
22 Come here and predict what will happen,
    so that we will know it when it takes place.
Explain to the court the events of the past,
    and tell us what they mean.
23 Tell us what the future holds—
    then we will know that you are gods!
Do something good or bring some disaster;
    fill us with fear and awe!
24 You and all you do are nothing;
    those who worship you are disgusting!

25 “I have chosen a man who lives in the east;[b]
    I will bring him to attack from the north.
He tramples on rulers as if they were mud,
    like a potter trampling clay.
26 Which of you predicted that this would happen,
    so that we could say that you were right?
None of you said a word about it;
    no one heard you say a thing!
27 I, the Lord, was the first to tell Zion the news;
    I sent a messenger to Jerusalem to say,
    ‘Your people are coming! They are coming home!’[c]
28 When I looked among the gods,
    none of them had a thing to say;
    not one could answer the questions I asked.
29 All these gods are useless;

이사야서 41장

키루스의 소명

1

섬들아, 조용히 내 말을 들어라. 겨레들은 새 힘을 얻어라. 가까이 와서 말하여라. 우리 함께 재판하러 나아가자.

2

발길이 닿는 곳마다 승리를 불러오는 이를 누가 동방에서 일으키셨느냐? 그분께서 그에게 민족들을 넘겨주시어 그가 임금들을 굴복시킨다. 그는 자기 칼로 그들을 먼지처럼 만들고 자기 활로 그들을 지푸라기처럼 날려 버린다.

그가 그들을 뒤쫓으며 거침없이 나아가는데 미처 발이 땅에 닿지도 않는다.

누가 이를 이루고 실행하였느냐? 처음부터 세대들을 불러일으킨 이 나 주님이 시작이고 마지막에도 나는 변함이 없으리라.

섬들이 보고 두려워하며 땅끝들이 무서워 떤다. 그들이 다가온다, 그들이 모여 온다.

서로가 서로를 도와주며 자기 동료에게 “힘을 내!” 하고 말한다.

장인은 도금장이를 격려하고 망치로 쇠를 고르는 자는 모루를 치는 자를 격려하며 땜질이 잘되었다고 말하면서 흔들리지 않게 그것을 못으로 고정시킨다.

이스라엘과 함께 계시는 하느님

그러나 너 이스라엘, 나의 종아 내가 선택한 야곱아 나의 벗 아브라함의 후손들아!

9

내가 너를 땅끝에서 데려오고 그 가장자리에서 불러와 너에게 말하였다. “너는 나의 종 내가 너를 선택하였고 너를 내치지 않았다.”

10

나 너와 함께 있으니 두려워하지 마라. 내가 너의 하느님이니 겁내지 마라. 내가 너의 힘을 북돋우고 너를 도와주리라. 내 의로운 오른팔로 너를 붙들어 주리라.

11

보라, 너에게 격분하는 자들은 모두 부끄러워하며 수치를 당하리라. 너와 다투는 사람들은 아무것도 아닌 자들처럼 되어 멸망하리라.

12

너에게 대적하는 사람들을 네가 찾으려 해도 찾아내지 못하리라. 너와 전쟁을 벌이는 자들은 아무것도 아닌 자들처럼, 없어진 자들처럼 되리라.

13

나 주님이 너의 하느님 내가 네 오른손을 붙잡아 주고 있다. 나는 너에게 말한다. “두려워하지 마라. 내가 너를 도와주리라.”

14

두려워하지 마라, 벌레 같은 야곱아 구더기 같은 이스라엘아! 내가 너를 도와주리라. 주님의 말씀이다. 이스라엘의 거룩한 분이 너의 구원자이다.

15

보라, 내가 너를 날카로운 타작기로, 날이 많은 새 타작기로 만들리니 너는 산들을 타작하여 잘게 바수고 언덕들을 지푸라기처럼 만들리라.

16

네가 그것들을 까부르면 바람이 쓸어 가고 폭풍이 그것들을 흩날려 버리리라. 그러나 너는 주님 안에서 기뻐 뛰놀고 이스라엘의 거룩한 분 안에서 자랑스러워하리라.

경이로운 귀향길

17

가련한 이들과 가난한 이들이 물을 찾지만 물이 없어 갈증으로 그들의 혀가 탄다. 나 주님이 그들에게 응답하고 나 이스라엘의 하느님이 그들을 버리지 않으리라.

18

나는 벌거숭이산들 위에 강물이, 골짜기들 가운데에 샘물이 솟아나게 하리라. 광야를 못으로, 메마른 땅을 수원지로 만들리라.

19

나는 광야에 향백나무와 아카시아 도금양나무와 소나무를 갖다 놓고 사막에 방백나무와 사철가막살나무와 젓나무를 함께 심으리라.

20

이는 주님께서 그것을 손수 이루시고 이스라엘의 거룩하신 분께서 그것을 창조하셨음을 모든 이가 보아 알고 살펴 깨닫게 하시려는 것이다.

주님만이 하느님

21

“너희의 소송거리를 가져오너라.” 주님께서 말씀하신다. “너희의 증거를 제시해 보아라.” 야곱의 임금님께서 말씀하신다.

22

다가와서 우리에게 알려라, 앞으로 무엇이 일어날지를. 예전의 일들이 어떤 것인지 알려라. 그러면 우리가 그것들을 살펴 그 결말을 알게 되리라. 아니면 앞으로 올 일들을 우리에게 말해 보아라.

23

너희가 신이라는 것을 우리가 알 수 있도록 다가올 일들을 알려 보아라. 우리가 함께 겁내며 두려워하도록 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든 해 보아라.

24

보라, 너희는 아무것도 아니요 너희의 업적 따위는 있지도 않으니 너희를 선택하는 자는 혐오스러울 뿐이다.

키루스의 승리를 예고하신 주님

25

내가 북쪽에서 한 사람을 일으키니 그가 왔다. 나는 해 뜨는 곳에서 그를 지명하여 불렀다. 그는 옹기장이가 흙을 밟아 짓이기듯 통치자들을 진흙처럼 짓밟으리라.

누가 처음에 이것을 알려 주어 우리가 알게 되었고 누가 오래전에 알려 주어 우리가 “옳다!” 하고 대답할 수 있게 되었느냐? 알려 준 자가 아무도 없고 들려준 자가 아무도 없으며 너희의 말을 들어 본 자가 아무도 없다.

27

나는 먼저 시온에게 “보라, 이들을 보라!” 하였고 이제 예루살렘에 기쁜 소식을 전할 이를 보낸다.

28

그러나 내가 둘러보니 아무도 없다. 내가 물었을 때 대답할 수 있는 조언자가 그들 가운데에는 아무도 없다.

29

보라, 그들은 모두 아무것도 아니요 그들의 행적은 있지도 않으며 그들이 부어 만든 상들은 바람이요 헛것일 뿐이다.
