Job Summary: This opportunity is open to RPN students who have completed 2 years of a 3 year program to participate as a member of the health care team in providing direct patient care and clinical unit support while working in collaboration with Registered Nurses or Registered Practical Nurses. The SCP is not counted as a part of the baseline Nursing staff complement and is considered a valuable "extra set of hands" on the unit. The SCP will have the opportunity to participate in project work and initiatives relevant to the particular nursing unit.
Structure: The program will run for 11 weeks commencing on June 11th, 2012. The position will require the successful candidate to be available for full-time hours from June 11th until August 24th. Shift work will be required of this role and may included 8 and/or 12 hour days/evenings/nights/weekends based on the operational need of the unit.

Education: Completion of 2 years of an RPN Nursing program with an accredited college Excellent academic standing Current Basic Rescuer Certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support

Duties and Responsibilities: Direct Patient Care: In collaboration with the Nursing staff, assist patients with personal hygiene (bathing, dressing, shaving and shampooing of hair). Provide assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per the hospital policies. Provide measures to ensure skin integrity. Provide on-going comfort measures to the patient, including bed-making. Assist with patient safety and comfort by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy, and safe from hazards. Practice all procedures in keeping with infection control policies and using universal precautions. In accordance to the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Guideline, Utilization of Unregulated Care
Providers (UCPs), the SCPs may under the direction of an RN or RPN generally be providing care to stable patients Project work as identified by the unit. General may include duties : setting up patient rooms to receive admitted, transferred and post op patients, assist with admissions, transfers and discharges, performing pre-established range of motion exercises (active and passive), toileting, denture care, assist with meal setting and feeding patients, freshen bedside water containers, provide comfort measures, stocking medication room with supplies, mobility assessments, ambulating patients and assisting with lifts/transfers, nursing station support when Unit Clerk on break/lunch, stocking isolation gowns/mask supplies outside the room of isolated patients, read to and talk with patients, foot soaks, back massages, tidy patient possessions as requested by patient. Participate as a team member.
Communication: Responsible for on-going communication with the assigned Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse. Participates as a member of the health care team and fosters relationships/partnerships with other departments within the hospital. Provides on-going support for the patient and the family using effective communication skills. Documents care given on the appropriate forms. Participates in the completion of relevant reports/forms as required by hospital policy.
