8. Alliance / Union(Su Ji Bi / Hexagram 8)
▣ Six at the beginning : Being sincere and seeking union brings no blame.
If sincerity fills the jar like an earthen vessel,
in the end unexpected good fortune(or other blessings) will come.
[Explanation]
Six at the beginning [初六,초육] seeks closeness with sincerity/trust, so there is no blame.
If one possesses sincerity as fully as an earthen jar filled to the brim,
even if an unexpected untoward event arises toward theend,
it will ultimately tturn out to be good fortune.
[Commentary]
Initial Six [初六,초육] is still naive and does not yet fully understand worldly affairs or true intimacy.
Although it is a position to correspond with line 4,
both are Yin(陰,음) lines and cannot respond to each other,
meaning it does not know the way of affection and acts like an immature child who simply
approaches everyone to be friendly, especially toward Nine in the fifth line [九五,구오].
However, line 4 has no reason to take care of line 6, and since both are Yin(陰,음) lines,
they cannot form a close relationship.
Thus, if line 6 goes forward to become close with line 5 with utmost sincerity [有孚比之,유부비지], there will be no blame [无咎,무구].
This is why 'sincerity[有孚,유부],' which reflects truth and loyalty, is mentioned twice.
Here, the 'sincerity[有孚,유부]' of lnitial Six [初六,초육] represent innocent, childlike purity.
It is pure, innocent simplicity, and cuteness itself with all kinds of charm.
Therefore, if charm and devotion are seen twice as much compared to other positions,
line 6 will receive love from the father figure(king, boss) at line 5,
hogging the household's affection, gaining recognition, and securing a solid backing
Confucius's commentary was as follows :
"lnitial Six of the Bi Hexagram: if one proceeds purely with sincerity,
even if unexpected untoward events arise, it will ultimately turn out to be good fprtune
Let us think about what sincerity[有孚,유부] means in the private meeting between
Guan Zhong (管仲,관중) of Qi and Cao Mo (曺沫,조말) of Lu.
This is the position where the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) changes into the Shui- Lei- Tun
Hexagram(水雷屯卦,수뢰준괘 / Hexagram 3).
Here, 'earthen jar(缶,부)' refers to a warm, genuine heart filled with clear,
bright, and deep affection.
Meanwhile, considering that the Book of Rites(禮器,예기) notes,
"Common people used earthen jars for sacrifices, while kings used high-grade vessels,"
we can see that the humble vessel used by common folk in rituals is a metaphor
for the 'unpretentious heart of the people.'
Like an earthen wine jar filled to the brim with sincere wine offered by common folk,
as expiained by "If a sincere heart overflows like wine, it will bring unexpected benefits,"
this is akin to 'the principle where opening the jar of wine that matures first opens it first,'
portending even an unexpected promotion or recognition from the state.
Therefore, it is appropriate to interpret 'filling the jar (盈缶,영부)' as filling the heart
with utmost sincerity.
In the l Ching(周易,주역), the hexagrams containing 'earthen jar (缶,부)' are Kan Hexagram
(坎卦,감괘 / Hexagram 29) line 4 and Li Hexagram(離卦,이괘 / Heexagram 30) line 3.
At the very last moment of departure, no matter how harsh the world may be,
learning the way of closeness and filling one's heart with it is the ultimate principle
