(Commentary)

Maha Prajnaparamita
(Great Wisdom Crossing to the Other Shore)
By Jung Ha-sun
Destiny turns when we reach a crosswalk,
When we step onto flat ground after climbing stairs,
When we tread on piano keys to reach the other side.
Only by crossing the sea of suffering do we touch the other shore,
And to cross that sea, one must sing a song.
That is why piano keys are laid down at the crosswalk.
Usually, we do not sing,
Yet we burst into song when joy or sorrow lies before us.
People cross over, step by step, to enter a better path.
Maha Prajnaparamita

1. English Translation of the Commentary
Meaning of the Title
Maha Prajnaparamita (摩訶般若波羅蜜): Refers to the Buddhist concept of "crossing over the sea of suffering (samsara) to reach the shore of enlightenment (nirvana) through great wisdom." The poet brings this grand spiritual realization down to an accessible level, connecting it to the everyday act of crossing the street.
Analysis by Stanza & Scene
Stanza 1 (Moments when destiny changes):
“Destiny turns when we reach a crosswalk / When we step onto flat ground after climbing stairs”
Turning points in life do not always come from grand events; they happen in subtle moments—like meeting a boundary line (a crosswalk) or finding rest (flat ground) after a long climb.
“When we tread on piano keys to reach the other side”
The alternating black and white stripes of the crosswalk are metaphorically viewed as piano keys. Each step taken across the street becomes a process of producing music.
Stanza 2 (The relationship between the sea of suffering and singing):
“Only by crossing the sea of suffering do we touch the other shore / And to cross that sea, one must sing a song”
To navigate the ocean of suffering (Gohae / 苦海) and reach the other side (Pian), one needs a "song" to endure the hardships and journey.
“That is why piano keys are laid down at the crosswalk”
This is a poetic imagination: piano keys are laid out on the crosswalks of the world so that we may cross life's sea with joy and harmony.
Stanza 3 (Life, song, and moving toward a better path):
“Usually, we do not sing / Yet we burst into song when joy or sorrow lies before us”
While people often live oblivious in the routine of daily life, they begin to sing when faced with life's major waves—moments of deep joy or profound sadness.
“People cross over, step by step, to enter a better path.”
Ultimately, the act of everyone crossing a crosswalk reflects an instinctive, hopeful yearning to step onto a "better path" than where they currently stand.
