SWEET SUCCESS: NEW CROP

DAVID MUIR (ABC NEWS)(OC): News tonight about [1]a staple of our Thanksgiving meal, the sweet potato.  [2]It turns out the [3]orange flesh on the inside of that potato is [4]being credited with [5]preventing blindness and actually [6]saving thousands of lives.  ABC's Dr Richard Besser in West Africa.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(VO): For these mothers in rural West Africa, good reason to [7]give thanks.  Not turkeys or cranberries, but a new crop in their village's farm, an orange sweet potato.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(OC): These two sweet potatoes [8]look the same.  This [9]native one, when you [10]cut it open, is white inside.  [11]This new one that was introduced is orange.  That color makes all the difference.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(VO): That's because the orange means [12]it has beta carotene, which [13]your body turns into vitamin A.  Without enough vitamin A, babies can [14]go blind, even die.  Pregnant women [15]suffer night blindness.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(OC): Orange versus white, how did you all [16]figure this out?

SHAWN BAKER (HELEN KELLER INTERNATIONAL): I [17]came across these white sweet potatoes.  It's like, oh, what is this, because for an American, you wouldn't even know it was a sweet potato.  This would be a great way, by just [18]changing the vitamin A content of these sweet potatoes to really [19]get a lot more vitamin A in people's diets.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(VO): So, scientists from Helen Keller International [20]gave African women a new hybrid sweet potato, African, but orange.  The result?

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(OC): You like this?  Good?  I can feel [21]my vitamin A level rising.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(VO): She says, "It gives us the vitamins we need to [22]fight off disease."  Felila's three children [23]have no complaints.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(OC): Wow.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(VO): Thankfully, it's her main crop.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(OC): That's quite a garden.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(VO): A little bit of a health revolution, [24]with nothing other than a vegetable, with a different color.

DOCTOR RICHARD BESSER (ABC NEWS)(OC): It's really good.
