I Love English, 오늘은 ‘Kurt Campbell’ 커트 캠벨 차관보가 지난 13일 ‘미주 한인의 날’ 기념식에서 행한 연설을 듣고 이와 관련된 다양한 영어 표현 알아보겠습니다.

[본문]

We Must not Let Up, We Must Remain committed

My experience is that one of the most dangerous periods in a relationship is after a period of remarkable success.

We must not let up.

We must remain committed.

We must continue to work closely together.

We must ensure that after the elections in both Korea and the United States there is a strong bipartisan commitment to a close partnership on trade, economics and strategic issues.

It is absolutely essential that if we are to successfully engage North Korea, there must first be progress and improvement in the relationship between the North and the South.

I just want you to know on behalf of the servants of our relationship in this room, we will continue to work for the betterment of our bilateral relationship.

제 경험으로 비춰 볼 때 관계에 있어서 가장 위험한 시기는 가장 좋은 관계를 이루고 난 이후 입니다. (제 경험으로 비춰 볼 때 지금 한-미 관계가 좋다고  마음을 놓아서는 안된다고 생각합니다.)

우리는 미-한 관계가 약화되지 않도록 해야 합니다.

우리는 동맹 관계를 계속 유지해야 합니다.

우리는 계속해서 함께 긴밀히 협력해야 합니다.

우리는 올해 미-한 양국 대선 이후에도 무역과 경제, 전략적 문제에서 긴밀한 동반자 관계를 유지하기 위해 강력하고도 초당적인 노력을 기울여야 합니다.

북한을 성공적으로 대화로 끌어들이는 것은 매우 중요합니다. 그러기 위해서는 남-북 관계 개선과 진전이 우선적으로 이뤄져야 합니다.

저는 미-한 동맹을 위해  노력하고 계신 모든 분들을 대신해, 우리가 미-한 양국 관계의 개선을 위해 지속적으로 노력하겠다는 점을 말씀드리고 싶습니다.

▷ 가장 ~(무엇 무엇)한 것 중 하나는 ~(무엇 무엇)이다

Ex) 인생에서 가장 중요한 시기 중에 하나는 대학에서 전공을 결정할 때가 아닌 가 생각됩니다.

▷ Let up : ‘그치다’, 없어지만, 그만 두다는 뜻으로, ‘Stop’, ‘die out’, ‘loosen up’, ‘give up’과 비슷한 의미입니다.

그럼 ‘Let up’이 들어간 예문을 한 번 알아볼까요?

A: Do you think this rain will let up any time soon?
비가 곧 그칠 것 같니?

B: I don’t think so. You’d better carry your umbrella!
아니. 우산 꼭 챙겨!

비가 곧 그칠 것 같니? 영어로 Do you think this rain will let up any time soon? 이라고 했죠? 비나 눈, 폭풍우 등이 그치다, 영어로 이 ‘let up’ 을 이용해서 표현 할 수 있습니다. 여기서 let up은 ‘stop’과 같은 의미죠!

예를 들어 ‘눈이 좀 그만 왔으면 좋겠어!’ 영어로는 I wish this snow would stop sometime soon해도 되지만, ‘let up’을 이용해 ‘I wish this snow would let up  sometime soon’할 수도 있습니다.

A: Will this cold weather ever let up?
이 추운 날씨가 풀리기는 할까?

B: Come on now, it’s the winter! Winter is supposed to be cold.
얘, 얘, 지금 겨울이잖니! 겨울이 추운건 당연하지.
- 여기서 ‘Let up’은 ‘(날씨 등이) 풀리다, 완화되다’는 의미로 쓰였습니다.

A: If you take this medicine, the pain will let up.
이 약 먹으면 통증이 완화될거야.

B: Thanks.
고마워

- 여기서 ‘Let up’은 ‘Diminish’와 비슷한 의미로 ‘통증 등이 완화되다’는 뜻으로 쓰였죠!

A: Don’t let up yet! We still have a chance to win!
조금만 더 힘을 내! 아직 이길 가능성은 있어!

B: You’re right!
네 말이 맞아!

A: I can’t do it anymore!
더 이상은 못 하겠어!

B: No! You’d better not let up! You’re so close to the finish line.
아냐! 조금만 더 힘을 내!  결승 점이 바로 코앞에 있어!

- 여기서 ‘Let up’은 ‘Don’t reduce your effort’의 의미로, 조금만 더 힘을 내라는 의미로 쓰였죠!

[참고]

‘Let’ 과 ‘up’을 붙여 ‘Let-up’한 단어로 만들면, 명사로 정지, 완화, 감소라는 뜻이됩니다.

Let-up : n. (노력, 강도등의) 정지, 완화, 감소

Ex) 북한 김정은이 새 지도자로 등극하면서 그에 대한 찬양이 계속 되고 있다.

▷ We must remain committed.

Remain, R E M A I N 은 ‘계속  (~어떤 상태로)남아 있다’는 뜻이 있는데요, remain뒤에는 보통 어떤 상태로 남아있는지를 설명해주는 말이 나옵니다.

본문에서는 We must remain committed, 즉 ‘committed’한 상태로 계속 남아있어야 한다는 말인데요, 여기서 Committed는 ‘헌신적인, 열정적인’이란 뜻입니다.

그래서 ‘we must remain committed’ 말그대로하면 ‘미국과 한국은 계속 헌신적인 관계로 남아있어야 한다’ 즉 미-한 양국은 계속 동맹 관계를 유지해야 한다는 뜻이됩니다.

이 ‘remain + 어떤 상태를 나타내는 표현’ 일상생활에서 많이 쓰는데요, 예를 들어, ‘조용히 하고 있어요! ’ 영어로는 ‘Please remain silent’ 할 수 있죠.

Ex)
계속 서 있으세요.
Please remain standing!

자리에 앉아 계세요!
Please remain seated!

또 일상생활에서 ‘It remains to be seen’이란 말도 말이 쓰는데요, ‘무엇 무엇은 두고 볼 일이다’  라는 뜻입니다.

예를 들어 ‘오바마 대통령이 이번 대통령선거에서 재선 될지는 두고 볼일이다’ 영어로는 ‘Whether president Obama will be reelected remains to be seen’할 수 있습니다.

Ex) 브레이크가 완전히 수리 됐는지, 아니면 새로 교체해야 하는지는 아직 두고 봐야해. (아직 확실치 않아)

It remains to be seen whether the brakes are really fixed or will have to be replaced.

무역과, 경제, 그리고 전략적 문제에 있어

즉 미-한 양국은 올해 대선 이후에도 무역과, 경제, 전략적 문제에서 a close partnership긴밀한 동반자 관계를 위해 a strong 강력하고도 bipartisan 초당적인 commitment 헌신이나 노력을 기울여야 합니다. 라는 뜻이죠.

초당적인 노력을 기울여야 한다에서, 노력 헌신, ‘Commitment’로 표현했는데요,  commitment는 ‘약속하다, 확약하다’는 뜻의 ‘Commit’의 명사 형이죠.

보통 commitment 뒤에 ‘to’가 나와서 ‘commitment to something’하면 ‘무엇에 대한 노력이나, 헌신, 약속’을 의미하는데요, 예를 들어 ‘미국은 6자 회담을 재개 하려면 북한이 우선 비핵화에 대한 구체적인 행동을 보여야 한다는 입장입니다’ 영어로는  ‘The United States has indicated that North Korea should show its tangible commitment to denuclearization, for the resumption of the Six-Party talks.’ 할 수 있습니다.

여기서 ‘commitment’는 ‘북한이 취해야 할 노력, 행동’ 등을 의미하죠!

Ex) 우리 회사는 모든사람에게 동등한 기회와 임금을 주기로 약속했다.

Our Company has a commitment to equal pay and opportunities.

이 노력, 헌신이라는 뜻의 ‘commitment’는  약속하다, 확약하다는 뜻의 ‘Commit’의 명사형이라고 설명해 드렸는데요, 그럼 이 ‘commit’는 일상생활에서 언제 쓸 수 있는지 한번 알아볼까요?

먼저 ‘어떠한 것에 대해 내가 확실한 약속을 하다, 노력을 기울이다’ 할 때 ‘Commit oneself’라는 표현을 이용해서 나타낼 수 있는데요, 예를 들어

‘약속을 정하기 전에 먼저 직장 상사에게 확인을 해보겠습니다.’ 영어로는 ‘Let me check with my boss before I commit myself.’ 할 수 있습니다.

▷ On behalf of someone : ~ 누구 누구를 대신해서, 누구누구를 대표해서

Ex) VOA 를 대신해서 청취자 여러분께 항상 저희 미국의 소리 방송을 들어주셔서 감사하다는 말을 전하고 싶습니다.

또 ~(누구 누구)를 대신해서 전화하다 할 때도 이 ‘on behalf of ’를 이용해서 나타낼 수 있는데요, 예를 들어 저는 스미스 씨를 대신해서 전화 하는 겁니다, 영어로는 ‘I’m calling on behalf of Mr. Smith.’ 할 수 있습니다.

또 on behalf of someone, 은 on someone’s behalf로 바꿔 쓸 수도 있는데요, 그래서 이문장은 ‘I’m calling on Mr Smith’s behalf.’해도 같은 뜻이죠!

▷ Bilateral relationship : 양국 관계

Uni-: 하나, 하나로 된 ex) Unity (통일성, 일치) Unification (통일, 단일화)
Bi- : 두개의 ex) Bicycle (자전거),  이중 언어를 사용하는 (Bilingual)
Tri-: 세개의, 삼중의 ex) Triangle (트라이 앵글)
Quad: 네 개의, 네개로 된
Penta : 다섯 개의 ex) Pentagon (오각형 모양으로 생긴 미 국방부 건물)

Ex) 미국과 북한은 중국 베이징에서 양자 회담을 가졌습니다.

It means ‘Not giving up too easily’

I won’t give up without a fight, 말그대로 하면

I won’t give up 포기 하지 않을 것이다 without a fight 싸우지 않고는이라는 말인데요, 즉 ‘무엇인가를 절대 포기 하지 않겠다’는 뜻이죠!
