『The Big Scene : Seven Sights』 is an exhibition that features seven artists from abroad who are at MMCA Residency Goyang as part of our International Exchange Program. MMCA Residency has been a member of Res Artis, an association of international residencies, and runs exchange programs in partnership with other renowned institutions. This year, in cooperation with seven institutions in Taiwan, Germany, Japan, France, and Australia, we have welcomed to our program seven artists: Hsieh Mu-Chi, Carola Deye, Thomas Koester, Simon Speiser, Midori Harima, Marine Dominiczak, and Kevin Platt. In the title of the show, 'The Big Scene : Seven Sights', 'Scene' comes from the movie terminology which refers to multiple shots filmed based on the same background. Thus each of the 'shots' in the scenery of art and artistic gestures created by the artists with MMCA Residency Goyang as its background conform into a larger 'Scene'. Through the exhibition it will be possible to view the artistic creations that have been produced as a result of the cultural stimulations that prompt creativeness, in a space where artists of different backgrounds come to meet. ● Marine Dominiczak subverts and expands the traditional concept of aesthetics in jewelry to explore the beauty of the body that has been modified through disabilities, and bondages, etc. 「Small Face」 is a project the artist has carried out during her three month stay in Korea, which reveals the underlying desire behind the culture of plastic surgery and the aesthetics of Koreans through sculpture and video. ● Midori Harima has been collecting and observing garbage that people have discarded, carrying out projects that reveal the locational, social cultural, historic, and economic conditions of the places they belong to. 「Democracy Demonstrates」 is a documentation of the artist's consumption during her 90 days of stay in Korea, showing through photographs and installations, her artistic attempts at equality beyond differences in everyday life. ● Carola Deye has been carrying out work which provokes a new awareness to issues related to gender by transforming and reinterpreting them through a grafting of the traditional and the modern. The 「Mask Mask」 series are monotypes that combine the folk mask of Korea with sanitary masks that became commonplace due to the recent MERS epidemic, exposing the double demeanor of both disclosure and protection in hiding the body. ● Based on the process of analog photography, Thomas Koester thoughtfully explores the means of photographic representation and ways of showing photography. 「Untitled 2015」 series is a documentation of the past, present, and future of Seoul, where the history of the city and the process of its dynamic transformation can be identified through the mix of scenary photographed in 'Yongsan' and 'Tongillo'. ● Hsieh Mu-Chi uses painting and video as his medium in a witty way to experiment with the essence of the act of creation through various methods, conditions, and situations. In the exhibition he will be showing 「Sketch from the hill road」 where he draws landscapes from a moving vehicle, 「back to the junior」 where he dresses up as a rapper and sings with his juniors in school of ways to become an artist etc. ● Kevin Platt has constantly been working with elements found in religious rites and ceremonies. His previous experiments of artistic explorations are continued even in the unfamiliar environment of Korea, and the ritualistic objects and places that the artist has found in nature create meditative and lyrical sceneries as they are merged with the artist's personal stories and interests. * This Asialink Arts Residency Program is a collaboration between Asialink, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Artspace and BigCi and is supported by the Australian-Korea Foundation, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. ● Simon Speiser uses as the subject of his work, science fictions that he himself authored. Based on a boundless imagination, the stories contain a realistic awareness of the future including collective unconsciousness, hypothetical gender, the coexistence of nature and technology etc. In 「 VɅ 207」 which will be shown in the exhibition, the artist uses three T-shirts to play out the story of space pirates that have been cryopreserved in a spaceship. ■ MMCA Residency Goyang
