The Very Busy Spider (너무 바쁜 거미)
Early one morning the wind blew a spider across the field. A thin, silky thread trailed from her body. The spider landed on a fence post near a farm yard... and began to spin a web with her silky thread. "Neigh! Neigh!" said the horse. "What to go for a ride?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Moo! Moo!" said the cow. "What to eat some grass?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Baa! Baa!" bleated the sheep. "Want to run in the meadows?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Maa! Maa!" said the goat. "Want to jump on the rocks?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Oink! Oink!" grunted the pig. "Want to roll in the mud?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Woof! Woof!" barked the dog. "Want to chase a cat?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Meow! Meow!" cried the cat. "Want to take a nap?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Quack! Quack!" called the duck. "Want to go for a swim?" The spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web. "Cock-a-doodle do!" crowed the rooster. "Want to catch a pesty fly?" And the spider caught the fly in her web... just like that! "Whoo? Whoo?" asked the owl. "Who built this beautiful web?" The spider didn't answer. She had fallen asleep. It had been a very, very busy day. |

On Thursday he ate though pour strawberries, but he was still hungry. On Friday he ate through five oranges, but he was still hungry. On Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon. That night he had a stomachache! The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf, and after that he felt much better. Now he wasn't hungry any more-and he wasn't a little caterpillar any more. He was a big, fat caterpillar. He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. He stayed inside fie more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushed his way out and... he was a beautiful butterfly! |
Papa, please get the moon for me (아빠, 달 따주세요)
Before Monica went to bed, she looked out of her window and saw the moon. The moon looked so near. "I wish I could play with the moon," thought Monica, and reached for it. But no matter how much she stretched, she could not touch the moon. "Papa," said Monica to her father, "please get the moon for me." Papa got a very long ladder. He carried the very long ladder toward a very high mountain. Then papa put the very long ladder on top of the very high mountain. Up and up and up he climbed. Finally, Papa got to the moon. "My daughter Monica would like to play with you," said Papa, "but you are much too big." "Every night I get a little smaller," said the moon. "When I am just the right size, you can take me with you." And, indeed, the moon got smaller and snaller and smaller. When the moon was just the right size, Papa took it. Down and down and down the climbed. "Here," said Papa to Monica, "I have the moon for you." Monica jumped danced with the moon. She hugged the moon and threw it into the air. But the moon kept getting smaller and smaller and smaller, and finally it disappeared altogether. Then, one night, Monica saw a thin sliver of the moon reappear. Each night the moon grew... and grew and grew... |

Clap your hands, stomp your feet. Shake your arms, then take a seat. Rub your tummy, pat your head. Find something yellow, find something red. Reach for the sky, wiggle your toes. Stick out your tongue and touch your nose. Roar like a lion, growl like a bear. Give me a kiss... Do you dare? Wiggle your fingers, slap your knee. I'll tickle you if you tickle me! Find something big, find something small. Spin in a circle... but try not to fall! Close your eyes and count to four. Now do a somersault across the floor. Spread your feet, look upside down. Make a silly face and act like a clown. Hop like a bunny, flap like a bird. Quiet as a mouse, now... Don't say a word! Tell me your name. How old are you? Tell me a secret, and I'll tell you one, too! Purr like a kitten, bark like a dog. Crawl like a baby, jump like a frog. Count your fingers, count your toes. Wiggle your eyebrows, wiggle your nose. Show me a smile, show me a frown. Stand on one foot and jump up and down. Fly like an airplane high in the sky. It's time to go now. so wave bye-bye... Bye-bye! |

The wind blew. It took the umbrella from Mr. White and quickly turned it inside out. It snatched the balloon from little Priscilla and swept it up to join the umbrella. And not content, it took a hat, and still not satisfied with that, it whipped a kite into the air and kept it spinning round up there.
It grabbed a shirt left out to dry and tossed it upward to the sky. It plucked a hanky from a nose and up and up and up it rose. It lifted the wig from the judge's head and didn't drop it back. Instead it whirled the postman's letters up, as if it hadn't done enough. It blew so hard it quickly stole a striped flag fluttering on a pole. It pulled the new scarves from the twins and tossed them to the other things. It sent the newspapers fluttering round, then tired of the things it found, it mixed them up and threw them down and blew away to sea. |

A tiny bug went for a walk. He met a cat and slopped to talk. They fell in step and strolled a while, and bumped into a crocodile. The crocodile grinned wide with glee, then introduced her friend the bee. They all began to dance a jig and bumped into a baby pig. "Oink!" he squealed. "That was my tail!" They apologized to no avail. So the crocodile sang him a song, and as she sang they bounced along. Zigging, zagging down the road, they bumped into a big green toad. The startled toad then scared a mouse who bumped into a yellow house. They kissed his head, then rang the bell. When no one came, they said, "Oh well..." and tippy-toeing on fourteen feet, they looked for something good to eat. Tumble bumble up the stairs, they opened doors and chocked for bears. In one room they found a bed. "I'm really tired !" the crocodile said. She stretched out long beside the bee. The triad hopped in, which made them three. Then came the cat, yawning big. Behind him was the baby pig. The bug came next, and last the mouse all squashed together in someone's house. And this is where the bug's walk ends - With eight... No, nine!... No, ten!... new friends. HOORAY! |

One day seven blind mice were surprised to find a strange Something by their pond. "What is it?" they cried, and they home. On Monday, Red Mouse went first to find out. "It's a pillar,"he said. No one believed him. On Tuesday, Green Mouse set out. He was the second to go. "It's a snake,"he said. "No,"said Yellow Mouse on Wednesday. "It's a spear." He was the third in turn. The fourth was Purple Mouse. He went on Thursday. "It's a great cliff,"he said. Orange Mouse went on Friday, the fifth to go. "It's a fan!"he cried. "I felt it move." The sixth to go was Blue Mouse. He went on Saturday and said, "It's nothing but a rope. But the others didn't agree. They began to argue. "A snake!" "A rope!" "A fan! " "A cliff! " Until on Sunday, White Mouse, the seventh mouse, went to the pond. When she came upon the Something, she ran up one side, and she ran down the other. She ran across the top and from end to end. "Ah,"said White Mouse. "Now, I see. The Something is as sturdy as a pillar, supple as a snake, wide as a cliff, sharp as a spear, breezy as a fan, stringy as a rope, but altogether the Something is... an elephant!" And when the other mice ran up one side and down the other, across the Something from end to end, the? agreed. Now they saw, too. |
A happy school of little fish lived in a corner of the sea somewhere. They were all red. Only one of them was as black as a mussel shell. He swam faster than his brothers and sisters. His name was Swimmy. One bad day a tuna fish, swift, fierce and very hungry, came darting through the waves. In one gulp he swallowed all the little red fish. Only Swimmy escaped. He swam away in the deep wet world. He was seared, lonely and very sad. But the sea was full of wonderful creatures, and as heswam from marvel to marvel Swimmy was happy again. He saw a medusa made of rainbow jelly... a lobster, who walked about like a water-moving machine...strange fish, pulled by an invisible thread... a forest of seaweeds growing from sugar-candy rocks... an eel whose tail was almost too far away to remember... and sea anemones, who looted like pink palm trees Then, hidden in the dark shade of rocks and weeds, he saw a school of little fish, just like his own. "Let's go and swim and play and SEE things!" he said happily. "We can't," said the little red fish. "The big fish will eat us all." "But you can't just lie there," said Swimmy. "We must THINK of something." Swimmy thought and thought and thought. Then suddenly he said, "I have it!" "We are going to swim all together like the biggest fish in the sea!" He taught them to swim close together, each in his own place, and when they had learned to swim like one giant fish, he said, "I'll be the eye." And so they swam in the cool morning water and in the midday sun and chased the big fish away. |

Every morning, when Charlie Rooster strutted into the barn to wake the other animals, Johnny Mouse and fat Percy went with him to help. Good friends always stick together," they said. When this job was done, they wheeled their bicycle out of the barn and set off for their morning ride. They could ride down the roughest paths and up the steepest cliffs. No curve was too sharp for them and their bicycle No puddle was deep enough to stop them. One day, they played a game of hide-and-seek by the roll lags pond. While Johnny Mouse was hiding, he discovered an old boat lying in the tall grass. He showed his friends, and they derided to play pirates. "Good friends always decide things together," they said. Johnny Mouse took the tiller, Charlie Rooster opened his wings to make the sail, and fat Percy plugged up the hole in the side of the boat by sitting on it. They sailed cut on the open water, and as the day went on, they felt very brave and bold. They conquered the village pond ! But hunger finally sent them back to the shore. First they tried to catch a fish. But their stomachs rumbled so loudly that they frightened all the fish away. Then they went looking for cherries. They shared them: some for Johnny Mouse, some for Charlie Rooster, and twice as many for fat Perty. Johnny Mouse didn't mind, but Charlie Rooster complained. He said it was unfair. So they gave him the chewy stones. "Friends are always fair." they said. They ate so many cherries that they all got stomachaches and had to sit down for a while before they started back. As evening fell and the shadows grew longer they bicycled home. Behind the henhouse, near the water barrel, they swore to be friends forever. "Good friends always stick together." they said. They decided to spend the night in Johnny Mouse's house. But Charlie Rooster got stuck in the doorway. Then fat Percy invited them to spend the night with him; butt Johnny Mouse said he didn't want to sleep in a pigsty. Finally, Charlie Rooster suggested sleeping in the henhouse. They tried to refit on a perch high above the ground... but it broke. So. sadly, they sold good night to each other and went to their own beds. "Sometimes good friends can't be together." they said. But that night they dreamed about each other, the way true friends do. |

One winter morning Peter woke up and looked out the window. Snow had fallen during the night. It covered everything at far as he could see. After breakfast he put on his snowsuit and ran outside. The snow was piled up very high along the street to make a path for walking. Crunch, crunch, crunch, his feet sank into the snow. He walked with his toes pointing out, like this: He walked with his toes pointing in, like that: Then he dragged his feet s-l-o-w-l-y to make tracks. And he found something sticking out of the snow that made a new track. It was a stick - a stick that was just right for smacking a snow-covered tree. Down fell the snow - plop! - on top of Peter's head. He thought it would be fun to join the big boys in their snowball fight, but he knew he wasn't old enough not yet. So he made a smiling snowman, and he made angels. He pretended he was a mountain-climber. He climbed up a great big tall heaping mountain of snow - and slid all the way down. He picked up a handful of snow - and another, and still another. He packed it round and firm and put the snowball in his pocket for tomorrow. Then he went into his warm house. He told his mother all about his adventures while she took off his wet socks. And he thought and thought and thought about them. Before he got into bed he looked in his pocket. His pocket was empty. The snowball wasn't there. He felt very sled. While he slept, he dreamed that the sun had melted all the snow away. But when he woke up his dream was gone. The snow was still everywhere. New snow was falling! After breakfast he called to his friend from across the hall, and they went out together into the deep, deep snow. |

Corduroy is a bear who once lived in the toy department of a big store. Day after day he waited with all the other animals and dolls for somebody to come along and take him home. The stare was always filled with shoppers buying all starts of things, but no one ever seemed to want a small bear in green overalls. Then one morning a little girl stopped and looked straight into Corduroy's bright eyes. "Oh, Mommy!" she said. "Look! There's the very bear I've always wanted." "Not today, dear." Her mother sighed. "I've spent too much already. Besides, he doesn't look new. He's lost the button to one of his shoulder straps." Corduroy watched them sadly as they walked away. "I didn't know I'd lost a button," he said to himself. "Tonight I'll go and see if I can find it." Late that evening. when all the shoppers had gone and the doors were shut and locked, Corduroy climbed carefully down from his shelf and began searching everywhere on the floor for his lost button. Suddenly he felt the floor moving under him! Quite by accident he had stepped onto an escalator- and up he went! "Could this be a mountain?" he wondered. "I think I've always wanted to climb a mountain." He stepped off the escalator as it reached the next floor, and there, before his eyes, was a most amazing sight-tables and chairs and lamps and sofas, and rows and rows of beds. "This must be a palace!" Corduroy gasped. "I guess I've always wanted to live in a palace." He wandered around admiring the furniture. "This must be a bed," he said. "I've always wanted to sleep in a bed." And up he crawled onto a large, thick mattress. All at once he saw something small and round. "Why, here's my button!" he cried. And he tried to pick it up. But, like all the other buttons on the mattress, it was tied down tight. He yanked and pulled with both paws until POP! Off came the button-and off the mattress Corduroy toppled, bang into a tall floor lamp. Over it fell with a crash! Corduroy didn't know it, but there was someone else awake in the store. The night watchman was going his rounds on the floor above. When he heard the crash he came dashing down the escalator. "Now who in the world did that!" he exclaimed. "Somebody must be hiding around here!" He flashed his light under and over sofas and beds until he came to the biggest bed of all. And there he saw two fuzzy brown ears sticking up from under the cover. "Hello!" he said. "Hew did you get upstairs?" The watchman tucked Corduroy under his arm and carried him down the escalator and set him on the shelf in the toy department with the other animals and dolls. Corduroy was just waking up when the first customers came into the store in the morning. And there, looking at him with a wide, warm smile, was the same little girl he'd seen only the day before. "I'm Lisa." she said, "and you're going to be my very own bear. Last night I counted what I've saved in my piggy bank and my mother said I could bring you home." "Shall I put him in a box for you?" the saleslady asked. "Oh, no thank you," Lisa answered. And she carried Corduroy home in her arms. She ran all the way up four flights of stairs, into her family's apartment, and straight to her own room. Corduroy blinked. There was a chair and a chest of drawers, and alongside a girl-size bed stood a little bed just the right size for him. The room was small, nothing like that enormous palace in the department store. "This must be home," he said. "I know I've always wanted a home!" Lisa sat down with Corduroy on her lap and began to sew a button on his overalls. "I like you the way you are," she said, "but you'll be more comfortable with your shoulder strap fastened." "You mast be a friend." said Corduroy. "I've always wanted a friend." "Me too!" said Lisa, and gave him a big hug. |

In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. In two straight lines they broke their bread and brushed their teeth and went to bed. They smiled at the good and frowned at the bad and sometimes they were very sad. They left the house at half past nine In two straight lines in rain or shine-the smallest one was Madeline. She was not afraid of mice-she loved winter, snow, and ice. To the tiger in the zoo Madeline Just said, "Pooh-pooh," and nobody knew so well how to frighten Miss Claver. In the middle of the night Miss Clavel tamed on her light and said, "Something is not right!" Little Madeline sat in bed, cried and oried-her eyes were red. And soon after Dr. Cohn came, he rushed out to the phone, and he dialed: DANton-ten-six- "Nurse," he said, "it's an appendix!" Everybody had to cry-not a single eye was dry. Madeline was in his arm in a blanket safe and warm. In a car with a red light they drove out into the night. Madeline woke up two hours later, in a room with flowers. Madeline soon ate and drank. On her bed there was a crank, and a crack on the ceiling had the habit of sometimes looking like a rabbit. Outside were birds, trees, and sky-and so ten days passed quickly by. One nice morning Miss Claver said, "Isn't this a fine-day to visit Madeline." VISITORS FROM TWO TO FOUR read a sign outside her door. Tiptoeing with solemn face, with some flowers and a vase, in they walked and then said, "Ahhh," when they saw the toys and candy and the dollhouse from Papa. But the biggest surprise by far-on her stomach was a scar! "Good-bye," they said, "we'll come again." and the little girls left in the rain. They went home and broke their bread brushed their teeth and went to bed. In the middle of one night Miss Claver turned on the light and said, "Something is not right!" And afraid of a disaster Miss Clavel ran fast and faster, and she said, "Please children do-tell me what is troubling you?" And all the little girls cried, "Boohoo, we want to have our appendix out, too!" "Good night, little girls! Thank the Lord you are well! And now go to sleep!" said Miss Clavel. And she tuned out the light-and closed the door-and that's all there is-there isn't any more. |
Make Way for Ducklings

Mr. and Mrs. Mallard were looking for a place to live. But every time Mr. Mallard saw what looked like a nice place, Mrs. Mallard said it was no good. There were sure to be foxes in the woods or turtles in the water, and she was not going to raise a family where there might be foxes or turtles. So they flew on and on. When they got to Boston, they felt too tired to fly any further. There was a nice pond in the Public Garden, with a little island on it. "The very place to spend the night," quacked Mr. Mallard. So down they flapped. Next morning they fished for their breakfast in the mud at the bottom of the pond. But they didn't find much. Just as they were getting ready to start on their way, a strange enormous bird came by. It was pushing a boat full of people, and there was a man sitting on its back. "Good morning," quacked Mr. Mallard, being polite. The big bird was too proud to answer. But the people on the boat threw peanuts into the water, so the Mallards followed them all round the pend and got another breakfast. better than the first. "I like this place," said Mrs. Mallard as they climbed out on the bank and waddled along. "Why don't we build a nest and raise our ducklings right in this pond? There are no foxes and no turtles, and the people feed us peanuts. What could be better?" "Good," said Mr. Mallard, delighted that at last Mrs. Mallard had found a place that suited her. But "Look out!" squawked Mrs. Mallard, all of a dither. "You'll get run over!" And when she got her breath she added: "This is no place for babies, with all those horrid things rushing about. We'll have to look somewhere else." So they flew over Beacon Hill and round the State House, but there was no place there. They looked in Louisburg Square, but there was no water to swim in. Then they flew over the Charles River. "This is better,'quacked Mr. Mallard. "That island looks like a nice quiet place, and it's only a little way from the Public Garden." "Yes," said Mrs. Mallard, remembering the peanuts. "That looks like just the right place to hatch ducklings." So they chase a cozy spot among the bushes near the water and settled down to build their nest. And only just in time, for now they were beginning to molt. All their old wing feathers started to drop out, and they would not be able to fly again until the new ones grew in. But of course they could swim, and one day they swam over to the park on the river bank, and there they met a policeman called Michael. Michael fed them peanuts, and after that the Mallards called on Michael every day. After Mrs. Mallard had laid eight eggs in the nest she couldn't go to visit Michael anymore, because she had to sit on the eggs to keep them warm. She moved off the nest only to get a drink of water, or to have her lunch, or to count the eggs and make sure they were all there. One day the ducklings hatched out. First came Jack, then Kack, and then Lack, then Mack and Nack and Ouack and Pack and Quack. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard were bursting with pride. It was a great responsibility taking care of so many ducklings, and it kept them very busy. One day Mr. Mallard decided he'd like to take a trip to see what the rest of the river was like, further on. So off he set. "I'll meet you in a week, in the Public Garden," he quacked over his shoulder.'Take good care of the ducklings." "Don't you worry," said Mrs. Mallard. "I know all about bringing up children." And she did. She taught them how to swim and dive. She taught them to walk in a line, to come when they were called, and to keep a safe distance from bikes and scooters and other things with wheels. When at last she felt perfectly satisfied with them, she said one morning: "Come along, children. Follow me." Before you could wink an eyelash Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack fell into line, just as they had been taught. Mrs. Mallard led the way into the water and they swam behind her to the opposite bank. There they waded ashore and waddled along till they came to the highway. Mrs. Mallard stepped out to cross the road. "Honk, honk!" went the horns on the speeding cars. "Qua-a-ack!" went Mrs. Mallard as she tumbled back again. "Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!" went lack, Kaek, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack, just as loud as their little quackers could quack. The cars kept speeding by and honking, and Mrs. Mallard and the ducklings kept right on quack-quack-quacking. They made such a noise that Michael came running, waving his arms and blowing his whistle. He planted himself in the center of the road, raised one hand to stop the traffic, and then beckoned with the other, the way policemen do, for Mrs. Mallard to cross over. As soon as Mrs. Mallard and the ducklings were safe on the other side and on their way down Mount Vernon Street, Michael rushed back to his police booth. He called Chancy at headquarters and said: "There's a family of ducks walkin'down the street!" Chancy said: "Family of what?" "Ducks!" yelled Michael. "Send a police car, quick!" Meanwhile Mrs. Mallard had reached the Corner Book Shop and turned into Charles Street, with Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack.Ouack, Pack, and Quack all marching in line behind her. Everyone stared. An old lady from Beacon Hill said: "Isn't it amazing!" and the man why swept the streets said: "Well, new. ain't that nice!" and when Mrs. Mallard heard them she was so proud she tipped her nose in the air and walked along with an extra swing in her waddle. When they came to the comer of Beacon Street there was the police car with four policemen that Clancy had sent from headquarters. The policemen held back the traffic so Mrs. Mallard and the ducklings could march across the street. right on into the Public Garden. Inside the gate they all turned round to say thank you to the policemen. The policemen smiled and waved good-by. When they reached the pond and swam across to the little island, there was Mr. Mallard waiting for them, just as he had promised. The ducklings liked the new island so much that they decided to live there. All day long they follow the swan boats and eat peanuts. And when night falls they swim to their little island and go to sleep. |
Song and Dance Man (노래하고 춤추는 할아버지)
Grandpa was a song and dance man who once danced on the vaudeville stage. When we visit, he tells us about a time before people watched TV, back in the good old days, the song and dance days. "Supper in an hour!” Grandma calls from the kitchen. “I wonder if my tap shoes still fit?” Grandpa says with a smile. Then he turns on the light to the attic, and we follow him up the steep, wooden steps. Faded posters of Grandpa when he was young hang on the walls. He moves some cardboard boxes and a rack of Grandma's winter dresses out of the way, and we see a dusty brown, leather-trimmed trunk in the comer. As soon as Grandpa opens it, the smell of cedar chips and old things saved fills the attic. Inside are his shoes with the silver, half-moon taps on the toes and heels, bowler hats and top hats, and vests with stripes and matching bow ties. We try on the hats and pretend we're dancing on a vaudeville stage, where the bright lights twinkle and the piano player nods his head along with the music. After wiping his shoes with a cloth he calls a shammy, Grandpa puts them on. He tucks small, white pads inside the shoes so his corns won't rub, and he turns on the lamps and aims each one down like a spotlight. He sprinkles a little powder on the floor, and it's show time. We sit on one of Grandma's woolen blankets, clap our hands, and call out, "Yay. Grandpa!" The song and dance man begins to dance the old soft shoe. His feet move slowly at first, while his tap shoes make soft, slippery sounds like rain on a tin roof. We forget that it's Grandpa dancing, and all we can hear is the silvery tap of two feet, and all we can see is a song and dance man gliding across a vaudeville stage. He says, "Watch this!" and does a new step that sounds like a woodpecker tapping on a tree. Suddenly, his shoes move faster, and he begins to sing. His voice is as round and strong as a canyon echo, and his cheeks get rosy as he sings "Yankee Doodle Boy," asong he knows from the good old days. There are too many dance steps and too many words in the song for us to remember, but the show is better than any show on TV. The song and dance man stops and leans forward with a wink. "What's that in your ear?" he asks, and he pulls a silver dollar out of somebody's hair. He rolls his bowler hat down his arm, catches it in his hand, and flips it back up onto his head. "Know how to make an elephant float?" he asks. "One scoop of ice cream, two squirts of soda, and three scoops of elephant!" We've heard that joke before, but the song and dance man slaps his knee and laughs until his eyes water. He tries to wipe them with a red hanky from his vest pocket, but the hanky just gets longer and longer as he pulls it out. He looks so surprised that we start laughing too, and it feels like the whole attic shaking. Sometimes we laugh so hard, the hiccups start, and Grandpa stops to bring us a glass of water from the bathroom. "Drink slow and hold your breath," he says, "or I'll have to scare you!" Once our hiccups are gone, he gets a gold-tipped cane and a black silk top hat from the trunk. He lowers his eyes and tips the hat, and he's standing very still. All the lights are tuned low except one that shines on his polished tap shoes. It's the grand finale, so the song and dance man takes a deep breath. He lifts the cane and holds it in both hands. Slowly, he starts to tap. His shoes move faster and faster, and the sounds coming from them are too many to make with only two feet. He spins and jumps into the air. Touching the stage again, he kneels with his arms spread out, and the silk top hat and gold-tipped cane lie side by side at his feet. His shoes are still, and the show is over. We stand up together and clap our hands. shouting "Hurray!" and "More!" but Grandpa only smiles and shakes his head, all out of breath. He takes off his tap shoes, wraps them gently in the shammy cloth, and puts them back in the loather-trimmed trunk. He carefully folds his vest and lays the top hat and cane on it, and we follow him to the stairway. Grandpa holds on to the rail as we go down the steps. At the bottom he hugs us, and we tell him we wish we could have seen him dance in the good old days, the song and dance days. He smiles, and whispers that he wouldn't trade a million good old days for the days he spends with us. But as he turns off the attic light, Grandpa glances back up the stairs, and we wonder how much he really misses that time on the vaudeville stage, when he was a song and dance man. |
