Movie Picks for Weekend

Time for one of my favorite segments of the week, new movies.

This week, we have a World War Two-era romance and a remake of a classic Western.

Plus, premiering across East Asia this weekend is a spin off from the popular Japanese comic book ''Death Note.''

Lee Jeewon has our preview.

 We begin with ''Atonement,'' a second collaboration between director Joe Wright and actress Keira Knightley, who previously worked together in ''Pride and Prejudice.''

  It's a film adaptation of British writer Ian McEwan's award-winning tale of guilt and redemption and has been nominated for seven Oscars.

It's set in 1935 Britain, revolving around a romantic relationship between a woman from an upper-class family named Cecilia and their housekeeper's son, Robbie.

But a false accusation from Cecilia's sister puts Robbie in jail, making the two lovebirds struggle through World War Two, waiting for a reunion.

''It's great to see Keira playing a fully rounded woman playing older than herself completely and beautifully, playing a harsher, tougher character.''

  Next up is a remake of a 1957 classic Western of the same title.

Dan Evans is a rancher who struggles to make ends meet.

To make some fast cash, he volunteers to escort apprehended gunman Ben Wade to be put on a train to Yuma Prison.

Evans must get there by outsmarting Wade's dangerous gang.

Russell Crowe plays the notorious gunman.

And many critics say the New Zealand-born actor's performance in a Western is not bad at all.

  Last on our list is a spin-off sequel to the popular Japanese thriller ''Death Note'' focusing on one of its characters, L.

The plot of this spin-off, created by an entirely new production staff, is unrelated to the original series.

  The main character is a detective who has twenty-three days to save the world, from a project aimed at exterminating the human race.

The movie premiers in Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan simultaneously on the back of its original's popularity across Asia.
