The Navy’s long-serving C-2A Greyhound conducted its final carrier landing and takeoff on June 25 on the flight deck of USS Nimitz in the Atlantic Ocean. The Greyhound is set to be fully retired later this year after nearly six decades of service, with its carrier onboard delivery duties now being handled by the CMV-22B Osprey. Here’s a look at the Greyhound on deployments and training exercises in recent years.

✈️⚓🛳그루먼 C-2 그레이하운드(Grumman C-2 Greyhound)는 미 해군 항공모함 간 보급품, 우편물, 승객 수송을 위해 설계된 쌍발 고익기이다. 주요 임무는 항공모함 탑재 물자 수송(COD)이다. 이 항공기는 항공모함 타격단에 필수적인 군수 지원을 제공한다. 주로 제트 엔진, 특수 물품, 우편물, 승객 등 우선순위가 높은 화물을 항공모함과 해안 기지 간에 수송하는 데 사용된다. ⚓🛳캐터펄트 발사(catapult launch)는 주로 항공모함에서 중형 항공기를 정지 상태에서 비행 속도까지 단 몇 초 만에 빠르게 가속시키는 데 사용되는 보조 이륙 시스템이다. 최신 시스템은 45,000파운드(약 20톤)의 항공기를 2초 이내에 시속 165마일(약 265km/h)까지 가속할 수 있다. 현대식 캐터펄트 기술에는 크게 두 가지가 있다. 증기식 캐터펄트: 기존 시스템은 고압 증기로 구동되는 갑판 아래의 거대한 실린더에 의존한다. 발사 시 피스톤이 항공기를 비행갑판 아래로 강하게 밀어낸다. 전자기식 항공기 발사 시스템(EMALS): EMALS는 증기 대신 고출력 선형 유도 모터를 사용한다. 제너럴 아토믹스(General Atomics)에서 개발한 이 시스템은 더욱 부드러운 가속을 제공하고 항공기 기체에 가해지는 부담을 줄이며, 무거운 항공기와 가벼운 항공기 모두를 원활하게 발사할 수 있다. 이 시스템은 특히 미 해군 제럴드 R 포드급 항공모함과 중국 푸젠 항공모함에 설치되어 있다.
