CHAMPIONS of England and champions of Europe - 2008 will be a year to go down in United folklore. Fifty years after the Munich air disaster, Sir Alex Ferguson's men commemorated the Busby Babes in the most fitting manner; by bringing the Champions League trophy back to Old Trafford.
STAR MAN: CRISTIANO RONALDO: He's been OK . . . though he could have scored more! Seriously, he has been magnificent. Where would United have been without his 42 goals? Seventeen points worse off in the title race, for a start. Brilliant. 10
EDWIN VAN DER SAR: The 37-year-old has exuded a calm authority. A couple of late-season groin injuries upset his rhythm, but he was otherwise impeccable. 8
WES BROWN: Was never distracted by his contract saga, and had his best season for the club. Played more games than anyone else. A solid deputy for Gary Neville. He was excellent in European Cup final. 7
RIO FERDINAND: Has cut out the lapses in concentration, and is now the complete package. His partnership with Nemanja Vidic is as good as the old Bruce and Pallister combo. 9
NEMANJA VIDIC: Picks up bumps, bruises and stitches just like Kevin Moran used to. Nothing stops him going in bravely. If the Reds have ever been in trouble his uncomplicated Row Z approach has come to the fore. 9
PATRICE EVRA: Much improved. Has put a road block down the left flank and just gets better as an attacking threat. Gabriel who? 8
PAUL SCHOLES: Knee injury took three months out of his season, but showed he's still got it with that Champions League semi-final strike against Barcelona. 7
MICHAEL CARRICK: Still polarises the supporters, but Sir Alex Ferguson is a big fan. His biggest impact came in the spring. 8
ANDERSON: Was not expected to be a major force this season, but established himself as a firm favourite during Paul Scholes' absence. Nerveless scoring his first goal for United in the shoot-out in Moscow. 7
OWEN HARGREAVES: Suffered a succession of injuries, but scored a couple of vital free kicks and proved his versatility at right-back. 6
NANI: Made a big impact early on. His contributions since than have been hit and miss. The headbutt that led to his red card against West Ham didn't help. 6
DARREN FLETCHER: Was Mr Dependable when he played, but his progress was stalled by an injury suffered on international duty with Scotland. 6
JOHN O'SHEA: Became the insurance policy on the bench due to his versatility. Made more appearances as a substitute than any other United player. 5
RYAN GIGGS: The most decorated player in United's history continues to offer vital cameos. There is a faction among the United support, particularly on fan forums, who have been cruelly impatient with the Welshman, but he remains a key member of the squad. 6
JI-SUNG PARK: Took him a while to get going after knee surgery last summer, but the dynamic Korean found his form late in the season with some energetic performances. 5
CARLOS TEVEZ: An excellent addition to United's attack. His 19 goals included vital late strikes against Birmingham, Tottenham and Blackburn. 8
WAYNE ROONEY: Injuries halted his progress, but he still managed to grab 17 goals. United are a poorer side when he is not on board. 7
LOUIS SAHA: Injury-prone Frenchman has spent more time in the medical room than on the pitch. Has not been available when the Reds really needed him. 3
GERARD PIQUE: The 21-year-old Spaniard was blamed for Bolton's winning goal against the Reds in November but turned in some mature late-season performances. 5
TOMAS KUSZCZAK: An adequate deputy for Edwin van der Sar, but he often gives the feeling that an error is lurking just around the corner. 4
MIKAEL SILVESTRE: Did not have much involvement after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in September. But came back late in the season against Chelsea was a good addition to squad. 4
