little과 few

① 둘다 '거의 ‐아니다'라는 부정의 의미를 가진다. 하지만 셀 수 있는 명사 앞에서는 few를 쓰고 셀 수 없는 명사 앞에서는 little을 쓴다.

 I have little interest in politics.

 Few politicians are really honest.

② little과 few가 부정의 의미라면 a little과 a few는 '약간 있다'는 긍정의 의미다.

 I have a few friends.

 There's a little water in the bottle.

 His ideas are difficult, and few people understand them.

 His ideas are difficult, but a few people understand them.

③ the, my, these와 같은 한정사 앞에서는 (a) little of, (a) few of라는 형태로 쓴다. 물론 보통 명사 앞에서는 (a) little, (a) few라는 형태로 쓴다.

 Few people can say that we always tell the truth.

 Few of us can say that we always tell the truth.

 Could I try a little wine?

 Could I try a little of your wine?

 Only a few children like maths.

 Only a few of the children in this class like maths.

④ little이나 few는 명사 앞에 쓰이지만 이들 뒤에 오는 명사 앞에서 이미 언급되었다면 그 명사를 생략하고 little이나 few만 쓸 수 있다. 명사가 앞에 언급되어 있지 않다면 명사를 생략하고 단독으로 쓸 수 없다.

 Some more soup? Just a little, please.

 They had little hope.

 Their hope was little.(*)

⑤ (a) little은 다른 형용사나 부사를 수식하지 않는다.

 It's not very interesting.

 It's not little interesting.(*)

⑥ a little은 부정적인 의미를 갖는 형용사나 부사를 수식할 수 있다.

 It's a little inconvenient.

 They arrived a little late.

⑦ (a) little은 비교급은 수식할 수 있다.

 How are you? A little better, thanks.

 The new model is little faster than the old one.
