By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
"Life is but an empty dream !"
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real ! Life is earnest !
And the grave is not it's goal;
"Dust thou art, to dust returnest," "너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가리라."
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life, 인생의 노영 안에서
Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
Be a hero in the strife !
Trust no future, howe'er pleasant !
Let the dead Past bury it's dead !
Act,- act in the living Present !
Heart within, and God o'erhead !
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints, on the sands of time;- 발자취를 남길 수가 있느니라.
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labour and to wait.
Dear Frances Liu !
Happy new year,
Much thanks for your email dated 19th June and 23rd Dec. last year.
Above is one of my favorite poems in my schooldays.
It was 45 years ago that I learned English literature with that poem.
Is life but an empty dream ?
Do you think that way about life ?
It should be really eranest and the grave is not our goal.
They say that art is long and time is fleeting.
Yes, time is running away like an arrow shooted from the past.
I acomplished nothing yet, art neither my dream.
Sometimes I used to look back my past.
Let the dead past bury it's dead !
Yes, it's right the past is dead for nothing.
I'd rather be still achieving, still pursuing and
learn to be free from desires and to wait.
Life is something sincere and real.
But it is something for our aging people to be free
from the shakles of human relationships
and we must be free in everything, am I right ?
I attend the volunteer meeting every week
and explain the history of our palace.
I have to take care of my second grand daughter
who is old by three months.
Live Freely for yourself,
Know yourself,
Be true to yourself.
What you need to do right now is
to discover with your own insight a path of perfect freedom:
freedom from mental constriction,
freedom from physical fetters,
freedom from the shackles of human relationships.
You must be free in everything. You don't need to be bound by anyone.
Live free as you wish.
Nothing is as worth living as the path you have chosen
and determined by yourself.+
sincerely yours,
From yong boo lee
Dear Yongboo,
Thank you for your reply and it is really delighted to
hear you again!
The poem is a bit hard for me,
I have to take sometime to understand it all
and I hope I treasure something from it.
I hope your family and you can enjoy a good year of
DOG!!
