36) March 31 (Sat): Santiago de Compostela: One of the three major Christian holy sites


  Located in northwestern Spain and northern Portugal, Santiago de Compostela (hereafter Santiago) is considered one of the three most sacred Christian sites, along with Jerusalem and Rome.
  Since the Middle Ages, countless pilgrims have journeyed here. The pilgrimage route begins in southern France, crosses the Pyrenees, passes through several cities in the northern region, and reaches Santiago, a journey of approximately 800 kilometers.


  Among Jesus' twelve disciples, James preached in Spain for seven years before returning to Jerusalem, where he was captured and martyred. His disciples reportedly loaded his remains onto a ship and transported them to Spain for burial, but their location remains unknown.
  In the early 8th century, when Muslims invaded the Iberian Peninsula and Christianity was persecuted, the Reconquista (Christian restoration movement) arose. In the early 9th century, a shepherd, guided by a star, discovered the tomb of Saint James. A small church was built on the site, and the discovery of the tomb of James is said to have inspired the heroes of the Reconquista, driving the Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula. As news of the discovery of James's tomb spread throughout Europe, many pilgrims visited the site.


  When I arrived in Santiago de Compostela, known as the city of prayer, the city of learning, and the city of rain, it was raining as usual. I checked into a hotel just outside the old town and rested for a while. When the rain subsided, I headed to the Catedral, where James's tomb is located.

스페인 북서부,폴투갈 북부 지방에 자리 잡은 Santiago De Compostela(이하 Santiago)는 예루살렘, 로마와 함깨 기독교 3대 성지로 손꼽히는 곳이다. 중세이후 많은 순례자들이 이곳을 거쳐 갔다.
 
순례 길은 프랑스 남부에서 출발하여 피레네 산맥을 넘어 tvp인 북부 지역의 여러 도시를 거치면서 Santiago까지 800여 Km를 걸어서 이곳에 오고 있다.
예수의 12 제자 중 야고보는 스페인에서 7년 간 전도를 하고 예루살렘으로 돌아가서 붙잡히고 순교를 하였다. 제자들은 그의 유해를 배에 싣고 스페인에 옮겨 매장하였으나 그 위치를 알 수 없었다고 한다. 8세기 초 이슬람 교도가 이베리아 반도를 침입해 기독교가 박해받을 때 리콩키스타 운동(기독교 회복 운동)가 일어났다. 9세기 초에 양치기가 별의 인도에 따라 성 야고보의 묘를 발견하였다. 그 자리에 자그마한 교회를 세웠고 이 야고보 묘지 발견은 리콩키스타 영웅들의 정신적 힘이 되어 이슬람 교도를 이베리아 반도에서 몰아 내었다고 한다. 야고보의 묘가 발견되었다는 이야기가 온 유럽에 전해지면서 많은 순례자들이 이  곳을 찾게 되었다.  
 
기도의 도시. 학문의 도시, 비의 도시로 불리는 Santiago De compostela에 왔을 때는 역시 비가 내리고 있었다. 구시가지 바로 앞의 호텔에 숙소를 정하고 잠시 휴식을 한 후 비가 잠잠할 때 야고보 묘가 있는 Catedral로 갔다.

 Originally an Astral-style cathedral built in the late 9th century, it was destroyed and, as a pilgrimage route developed, a Romanesque cathedral was completed in France. Subsequent expansions and renovations resulted in its current appearance. The main entrance, in the Baroque style, leads into the cathedral.
                               원래는 9세기 말에 지은 아스트리아스 양식의 성당이었는데 파괴된 후 순례길이 생기면서
                               프랑스에서 로마네스크 양식의 성당을 완성시켰다. 그후 증개축을 거듭하여 현재의 모습에
                              이르렀다. 정문은 바로크 양식으로 대성당 안으로 들어 갔다.

If you go down to the left of the altar, you will find the tomb of James in the crypt.

The morning of April 1st was clear. After visiting the cathedral once more and praying, I left Santiago. With the hope of returning someday, I left with a heavy heart, heading for A Coruna, a port city on the Atlantic Ocean


4월 1일 아침에는 맑았다. 다시 한번 성당을 보고 기도를 한 후 Santiago를 떠났다.
언젠가 이곳을 올 수 있다는 희망을 안고 아쉬운 발걸음을 뒤로하고 대서양에 연한 항구 도시 
A Coruna로 떠났다.
