Topic 2. Christopher Reeve’s Last Interview
CHRISTOPHER REEVE TELLS HIS FINAL TALE
A source of inspiration to millions, Christopher Reeve had his own sources of inspiration. One of them, he said in one of his last interviews, was Brooke Ellison. Reeve won fame as the invulnerable hero of the “Superman” movies, then won respect as an actor for more complex performances in such films as “Deathtrap,” “The Bostonians,” “Street Smart” and “The Remains of the Day.”
He earned worldwide respect and admiration, however, after the 1995 horseback-riding accident which left him paralyzed from the neck down and on the verge of death, unable even to breathe without mechanical assistance. Instead of succumbing to his injuries, Reeve staged a dramatic comeback as both an actor and a director. His final project is “The Brooke Ellison Story,” a television movie set to premiere on the A&E channel on Oct. 25, the true story of a young woman who, after being left a quadriplegic by a car accident when she was 11, rallied to earn a degree from Harvard. “I give a lot of speeches and do a lot of interviews,” Reeve said, “but I felt that, if we could tell this one story really well about what it’s like to live with paralysis, and have that seen in a dramatic form around the world, that would be a really worthwhile contribution ... I feel that with everything in life, whether it’s a film project or anything else, I can only do things that I actually care about. I can’t just take any job, because things are too difficult to do and life’s too short and precious.”
The truth of that observation was borne out on October 10, when Reeve died of heart failure at a hospital near his home in Westchester County, N.Y., where he had been undergoing treatment.
