Part 1 : Honesty(Jeong-jik)... Having a right and upright mind... The 57th Deed.
Being upright (正,정) means being free from selfishness,
and being straight(直,직) means having no crookedness in one′s heart.
In general, Righteousness (義,의) means safeguarding one′s resolve
and purpose with an upright mind.
Because a person handles matters with straightness―leaving absolutely no room
for selfishness or crookedness―they would rather fail to achieve an objective
than lose the teust of the people.
[Original Ciassical Text & Pronunciation,
If one is upright, there is no selfishness, if one is straight,
there is no crookedness.
For Righteousness is grasping and maintaining one′s
will through uprightness,
and by handling affairs with straightness,
there is no selfishness or crookedness in between.
Therefore, it is preferable that a matter ends in failure,
rather than ever losing trust with others.
