I

After a bowl of Grandma’s noodles
Handmade with love, warm and soft
Ha-young, a 4th grader from Seoul
Grilled noodle tails for the first time
In Grandma’s cozy yard.

She lay on a mat beneath the stars
Listening to Grandma’s tales
Forgetting homework

Forgetting school
Laughing out loud at every tale.

The stars tiptoed down from the sky
To sit on the mat and listen in
As Grandma shared her wisdom.

The Sapsal dog curled up close
Sharing the warmth with Ha-young
Blinking sleepily, half-awake
Listening to Grandma’s stories.

II

The Moon wanted to shine so bright
Over the mountain village at night.

It cleared the clouds and took its place
Ready to light up every space.

But then it saw, to its surprise
The ginkgo tree with golden leaves
Already glowing, lighting the night
Brighter than the Moon’s soft light.

The Moon felt shy

It felt so small
Quietly hiding behind a cloud
Letting the ginkgo light the town with its lantern

Leaving all around.

할머니가 해 주신 손국수 한 그릇 먹고

국수 꼬랑이도 처음 구워 먹어 보고

할머니 집 마당 멍석 위에 드러누워

서울 사는 초등학교 4학년 하영이가

할머니 이야기를 듣고 있습니다

숙제 걱정

공부 걱정

모처럼 모두 잊고

할머니 이야기를 들으면서

깔깔깔 웃고 있습니다

하늘의 별들도

슬그머니 내려와

멍석 가로

모여 앉아

할머니에게 귀를 주고 있습니다

삽살개도

할머니 무릎을

하영이와 나누어 베고는

할머니의 이야기를 들으면서

두 눈을 끔벅이고 있습니다

가을밤

달님이 초저녁부터

산마을을

밝혀 주고 싶어

구름을

열치고 나왔다가

은행나무가

등불이 되어

달님보다 먼저

산마을을

밝혀 주고 있는 걸 보고

멋쩍어서

멋쩍어서

그만

구름 속으로

슬며시 몸을 숨기네
