Jesus Feeds Five Thousand
6 After this, Jesus went across Lake Galilee (or, Lake Tiberias, as it is also called). 2 A large crowd followed him, because they had seen his miracles of healing the sick. 3 Jesus went up a hill and sat down with his disciples. 4 The time for the Passover Festival was near. 5 Jesus looked around and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, so he asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food to feed all these people?” (6 He said this to test Philip; actually he already knew what he would do.)
7 Philip answered, “For everyone to have even a little, it would take more than two hundred silver coins[a] to buy enough bread.”
8 Another one of his disciples, Andrew, who was Simon Peter's brother, said, 9 “There is a boy here who has five loaves of barley bread and two fish. But they will certainly not be enough for all these people.”
10 “Make the people sit down,” Jesus told them. (There was a lot of grass there.) So all the people sat down; there were about five thousand men. 11 Jesus took the bread, gave thanks to God, and distributed it to the people who were sitting there. He did the same with the fish, and they all had as much as they wanted. 12 When they were all full, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces left over; let us not waste a bit.” 13 So they gathered them all and filled twelve baskets with the pieces left over from the five barley loaves which the people had eaten.
14 Seeing this miracle that Jesus had performed, the people there said, “Surely this is the Prophet[b] who was to come into the world!” 15 Jesus knew that they were about to come and seize him in order to make him king by force; so he went off again to the hills by himself.
Jesus Walks on the Water
16 When evening came, Jesus' disciples went down to the lake, 17 got into a boat, and went back across the lake toward Capernaum. Night came on, and Jesus still had not come to them. 18 By then a strong wind was blowing and stirring up the water. 19 The disciples had rowed about three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the water, coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 “Don't be afraid,” Jesus told them, “it is I!” 21 Then they willingly took him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached land at the place they were heading for.
The People Seek Jesus
22 Next day the crowd which had stayed on the other side of the lake realized that there had been only one boat there. They knew that Jesus had not gone in it with his disciples, but that they had left without him. 23 Other boats, which were from Tiberias, came to shore near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they got into those boats and went to Capernaum, looking for him.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When the people found Jesus on the other side of the lake, they said to him, “Teacher, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “I am telling you the truth: you are looking for me because you ate the bread and had all you wanted, not because you understood my miracles. 27 Do not work for food that spoils; instead, work for the food that lasts for eternal life. This is the food which the Son of Man will give you, because God, the Father, has put his mark of approval on him.”
28 So they asked him, “What can we do in order to do what God wants us to do?”
29 Jesus answered, “What God wants you to do is to believe in the one he sent.”
30 They replied, “What miracle will you perform so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, just as the scripture says, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32 “I am telling you the truth,” Jesus said. “What Moses gave you was not[c] the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the real bread from heaven. 33 For the bread that God gives is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they asked him, “give us this bread always.”
35 “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “Those who come to me will never be hungry; those who believe in me will never be thirsty. 36 Now, I told you that you have seen me but will not believe. 37 Everyone whom my Father gives me will come to me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to me, 38 because I have come down from heaven to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And it is the will of him who sent me that I should not lose any of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them all to life on the last day. 40 For what my Father wants is that all who see the Son and believe in him should have eternal life. And I will raise them to life on the last day.”
41 The people started grumbling about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 So they said, “This man is Jesus son of Joseph, isn't he? We know his father and mother. How, then, does he now say he came down from heaven?”
43 Jesus answered, “Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 People cannot come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me; and I will raise them to life on the last day. 45 The prophets wrote, ‘Everyone will be taught by God.’ Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 This does not mean that anyone has seen the Father; he who is from God is the only one who has seen the Father. 47 I am telling you the truth: he who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. 50 But the bread that comes down from heaven is of such a kind that whoever eats it will not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If you eat this bread, you will live forever. The bread that I will give you is my flesh, which I give so that the world may live.”
52 This started an angry argument among them. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.
53 Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in yourselves. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them to life on the last day. 55 For my flesh is the real food; my blood is the real drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. 57 The living Father sent me, and because of him I live also. In the same way whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This, then, is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread that your ancestors ate, but then later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.”
59 Jesus said this as he taught in the synagogue in Capernaum.

오천 명을 먹이시다(마태 14,13-21; 마르 6,30-44; 루카 9,10-17)

그 뒤에 예수님께서 갈릴래아 호수 곧 티베리아스 호수 건너편으로 가셨는데,

많은 군중이 그분을 따라갔다. 그분께서 병자들에게 일으키신 표징들을 보았기 때문이다.

예수님께서는 산에 오르시어 제자들과 함께 그곳에 앉으셨다.

마침 유다인들의 축제인 파스카가 가까운 때였다.

예수님께서는 눈을 드시어 많은 군중이 당신께 오는 것을 보시고 필립보에게, “저 사람들이 먹을 빵을 우리가 어디에서 살 수 있겠느냐?” 하고 물으셨다.

이는 필립보를 시험해 보려고 하신 말씀이다. 그분께서는 당신이 하시려는 일을 이미 잘 알고 계셨다.

필립보가 예수님께 대답하였다. “저마다 조금씩이라도 받아 먹게 하자면 이백 데나리온어치 빵으로도 충분하지 않겠습니다.”

그때에 제자들 가운데 하나인 시몬 베드로의 동생 안드레아가 예수님께 말하였다.

“여기 보리 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가진 아이가 있습니다만, 저렇게 많은 사람에게 이것이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?”

그러자 예수님께서 “사람들을 자리 잡게 하여라.” 하고 이르셨다. 그곳에는 풀이 많았다. 그리하여 사람들이 자리를 잡았는데, 장정만도 그 수가 오천 명쯤 되었다.

예수님께서는 빵을 손에 들고 감사를 드리신 다음, 자리를 잡은 이들에게 나누어 주셨다. 물고기도 그렇게 하시어 사람들이 원하는 대로 주셨다.

그들이 배불리 먹은 다음에 예수님께서는 제자들에게, “버려지는 것이 없도록 남은 조각을 모아라.” 하고 말씀하셨다.

그래서 그들이 모았더니, 사람들이 보리 빵 다섯 개를 먹고 남긴 조각으로 열두 광주리가 가득 찼다.

사람들은 예수님께서 일으키신 표징을 보고, “이분은 정말 세상에 오시기로 되어 있는 그 예언자시다.” 하고 말하였다.

예수님께서는 그들이 와서 당신을 억지로 모셔다가 임금으로 삼으려 한다는 것을 아시고, 혼자서 다시 산으로 물러가셨다.
물 위를 걸으시다(마태 14,22-33; 마르 6,45-52)

저녁때가 되자 제자들은 호수로 내려가서,

배를 타고 호수 건너편 카파르나움으로 떠났다. 이미 어두워졌는데도 예수님께서는 아직 그들에게 가지 않으셨다.

그때에 큰 바람이 불어 호수에 물결이 높게 일었다.
19
그들이 배를 스물다섯이나 서른 스타디온쯤 저어 갔을 때, 예수님께서 호수 위를 걸어 배에 가까이 오시는 것을 보고 두려워하였다.

예수님께서는 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “나다. 두려워하지 마라.”
21
그래서 그들이 예수님을 배 안으로 모셔 들이려고 하는데, 배는 어느새 그들이 가려던 곳에 가 닿았다.
생명의 빵

이튿날, 호수 건너편에 남아 있던 군중은, 그곳에 배가 한 척밖에 없었는데 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 그 배를 타고 가지 않으시고 제자들만 떠났다는 것을 알게 되었다.

그런데 티베리아스에서 배 몇 척이, 주님께서 감사를 드리신 다음 빵을 나누어 먹이신 곳에 가까이 와 닿았다.

군중은 거기에 예수님도 계시지 않고 제자들도 없는 것을 알고서, 그 배들에 나누어 타고 예수님을 찾아 카파르나움으로 갔다.

그들은 호수 건너편에서 예수님을 찾아내고, “라삐, 언제 이곳에 오셨습니까?” 하고 물었다.

예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표징을 보았기 때문이 아니라 빵을 배불리 먹었기 때문이다.
27
너희는 썩어 없어질 양식을 얻으려고 힘쓰지 말고, 길이 남아 영원한 생명을 누리게 하는 양식을 얻으려고 힘써라. 그 양식은 사람의 아들이 너희에게 줄 것이다. 하느님 아버지께서 사람의 아들을 인정하셨기 때문이다.”

그들이 “하느님의 일을 하려면 저희가 무엇을 해야 합니까?” 하고 묻자,

예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “하느님의 일은 그분께서 보내신 이를 너희가 믿는 것이다.”

그들이 다시 물었다. “그러면 무슨 표징을 일으키시어 저희가 보고 선생님을 믿게 하시겠습니까? 무슨 일을 하시렵니까?

‘그분께서는 하늘에서 그들에게 빵을 내리시어 먹게 하셨다.’는 성경 말씀대로, 우리 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹었습니다.”

예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 하늘에서 너희에게 빵을 내려 준 이는 모세가 아니다. 하늘에서 너희에게 참된 빵을 내려 주시는 분은 내 아버지시다.
33
하느님의 빵은 하늘에서 내려와 세상에 생명을 주는 빵이다.”

그들이 예수님께, “선생님, 그 빵을 늘 저희에게 주십시오.” 하자,

예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “내가 생명의 빵이다. 나에게 오는 사람은 결코 배고프지 않을 것이며, 나를 믿는 사람은 결코 목마르지 않을 것이다.
36
그러나 내가 이미 말한 대로, 너희는 나를 보고도 나를 믿지 않는다.
37
아버지께서 나에게 주시는 사람은 모두 나에게 올 것이고, 나에게 오는 사람을 나는 물리치지 않을 것이다.
38
나는 내 뜻이 아니라 나를 보내신 분의 뜻을 실천하려고 하늘에서 내려왔기 때문이다.
39
나를 보내신 분의 뜻은, 그분께서 나에게 주신 사람을 하나도 잃지 않고 마지막 날에 다시 살리는 것이다.
40
내 아버지의 뜻은 또, 아들을 보고 믿는 사람은 누구나 영원한 생명을 얻는 것이다. 나는 마지막 날에 그들을 다시 살릴 것이다.”

예수님께서 “나는 하늘에서 내려온 빵이다.” 하고 말씀하셨기 때문에, 유다인들이 그분을 두고 수군거리기 시작하였다.

그들이 말하였다. “저 사람은 요셉의 아들 예수가 아닌가? 그의 아버지와 어머니도 우리가 알고 있지 않는가? 그런데 저 사람이 어떻게 ‘나는 하늘에서 내려왔다.’고 말할 수 있는가?”

그러자 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “너희끼리 수군거리지 마라.
44
나를 보내신 아버지께서 이끌어 주지 않으시면 아무도 나에게 올 수 없다. 그리고 나에게 오는 사람은 내가 마지막 날에 다시 살릴 것이다.
45
‘그들은 모두 하느님께 가르침을 받을 것이다.’라고 예언서들에 기록되어 있다. 아버지의 말씀을 듣고 배운 사람은 누구나 나에게 온다.
46
그렇다고 하느님에게서 온 이 말고 누가 아버지를 보았다는 말은 아니다. 하느님에게서 온 이만 아버지를 보았다.
47
내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 믿는 사람은 영원한 생명을 얻는다.

나는 생명의 빵이다.

너희 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹고도 죽었다.
50
그러나 이 빵은 하늘에서 내려오는 것으로, 이 빵을 먹는 사람은 죽지 않는다.
51
나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 빵이다. 누구든지 이 빵을 먹으면 영원히 살 것이다. 내가 줄 빵은 세상에 생명을 주는 나의 살이다.”

그러자 “저 사람이 어떻게 자기 살을 우리에게 먹으라고 줄 수 있단 말인가?” 하며, 유다인들 사이에 말다툼이 벌어졌다.

예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 사람의 아들의 살을 먹지 않고 그의 피를 마시지 않으면, 너희는 생명을 얻지 못한다.

그러나 내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 사람은 영원한 생명을 얻고, 나도 마지막 날에 그를 다시 살릴 것이다.

내 살은 참된 양식이고 내 피는 참된 음료다.
56
내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 사람은 내 안에 머무르고, 나도 그 사람 안에 머무른다.
57
살아 계신 아버지께서 나를 보내셨고 내가 아버지로 말미암아 사는 것과 같이, 나를 먹는 사람도 나로 말미암아 살 것이다.
58
이것이 하늘에서 내려온 빵이다. 너희 조상들이 먹고도 죽은 것과는 달리, 이 빵을 먹는 사람은 영원히 살 것이다.”

이는 예수님께서 카파르나움 회당에서 가르치실 때에 하신 말씀이다.
영원한 생명의 말씀

제자들 가운데 많은 사람이 예수님께서 말씀하시는 것을 듣고 말하였다. “이 말씀은 듣기가 너무 거북하다. 누가 듣고 있을 수 있겠는가?”

예수님께서는 제자들이 당신의 말씀을 두고 투덜거리는 것을 속으로 아시고 그들에게 이르셨다. “이 말이 너희 귀에 거슬리느냐?

사람의 아들이 전에 있던 곳으로 올라가는 것을 보게 되면 어떻게 하겠느냐?
63
영은 생명을 준다. 그러나 육은 아무 쓸모가 없다. 내가 너희에게 한 말은 영이며 생명이다.

그러나 너희 가운데에는 믿지 않는 자들이 있다.” 사실 예수님께서는 믿지 않는 자들이 누구이며 또 당신을 팔아넘길 자가 누구인지 처음부터 알고 계셨던 것이다.

이어서 또 말씀하셨다. “그렇기 때문에, 아버지께서 허락하지 않으시면 아무도 나에게 올 수 없다고 너희에게 말한 것이다.”

이 일이 일어난 뒤로, 제자들 가운데에서 많은 사람이 되돌아가고 더 이상 예수님과 함께 다니지 않았다.

그래서 예수님께서는 열두 제자에게, “너희도 떠나고 싶으냐?” 하고 물으셨다.

그러자 시몬 베드로가 예수님께 대답하였다. “주님, 저희가 누구에게 가겠습니까? 주님께는 영원한 생명의 말씀이 있습니다.

스승님께서 하느님의 거룩하신 분이라고 저희는 믿어 왔고 또 그렇게 알고 있습니다.”

예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 너희 열둘을 뽑지 않았느냐? 그러나 너희 가운데 하나는 악마다.”

이는 시몬 이스카리옷의 아들 유다를 가리켜 하신 말씀이었다. 사실 그는 열두 제자 가운데 하나이면서도 머지않아 예수님을 팔아넘길 자였다.
