DAVID MUIR (ABC NEWS)(OC): And now to that white knuckle rescue playing out for much of the afternoon on a steep cliff out west, a man and his dog, dangling and rescuers proving their might. ABC's Clayton Sandell was there as this unfolded.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(VO): It started as a normal family hike that in an instant plunged 19-year-old Ivan Solas into a nightmare. Ivan was hiking along this ridge with his brother and father when his dad threw a bottle over the edge of a 300-foot drop. That's when Lola, a year old German Shepherd mix, fetched. She slid down the side of the ravine, 150 feet from the bottom. Ivan tried to rescue her then needed his own rescue.
RICK COMBS (LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT): The terrain itself was very steep.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(VO): 35 firefighters responded as Ivan and Lola waited for 90 long minutes, dangling precariously as rescuers inched closer on an unstable hillside. They wanted to use a helicopter to hoist them out, but the wind from the rotor blades forced them to plan b.
RICK COMBS (LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT): We were able to take members from the top of the ridge top, rappel down, secure the victim, along with his dog and lower them to safety.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(VO): Finally, rescuers were able to get a harness and leash on Lola. Then, Ivan and a rescuer slowly rappelled down. They were unhurt. We met Ivan at the bottom of the of the ravine.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(OC): How long were you up there?
IVAN SOLAS (RESCUED): Like, for two hours.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(OC): Two hours. How scary was it?
IVAN SOLAS (RESCUED): It was very scary.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(OC): What do you think of these firefighters who came to rescue you?
IVAN SOLAS (RESCUED): They helped me. I appreciate it.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(VO): Two hours later, Ivan was back in the arms of his family, no worse for the wear.
CLAYTON SANDELL (ABC NEWS)(OC): Now, Ivan says he wants to take those firefighters and treat them to dinner. He also says he'll be back in these hills soon. He says that's how he gets his daily exercise. And finally, David, he says that if he had to go over the edge to rescue his dog, he'd do it all over again. David?
