南丁格尔誓言是南丁格尔为护士所立的誓约。

弗洛伦斯·南丁格尔创始人，护理学的奠基人。1851年在德国一所医院接受护理训练。她所撰写的《医院札记》和《护理札记》两书，以及100余篇论文，均被认为是护理教育和医院管理的重要文献。1860年在英国圣多马医院首创近代护理学校。她的教育思想和办学经验被欧美和亚洲国家所采用。 ^[1]

Before God and those assembled here, I solemnly pledge;
To adhere to the code of ethics of the nursing profession;
To co-operate faithfully with the other members of the nursing team and to carryout [sic] faithfully and to the best of my ability the instructions of the physician or the nurse who may be assigned to supervise my work;
I will not do anything evil or malicious and I will not knowingly give any harmful drug or assist in malpractice.
I will not reveal any confidential information that may come to my knowledge in the course of my work.
And I pledge myself to do all in my power to raise the standards and prestige of the practical nursing;
May my life be devoted to service and to the high ideals of the nursing profession.^[5]

    2015年底，我在某三甲医院走廊的墙上，看到了《南丁格尔誓言》的中译文。读后，觉得译文有点不对劲儿，回来在网上搜索，所得译文与医院的一模一样，说明这是通行的“标准”译文；一查英文原文，果然中译文有一些值得商榷之处。现将“誓言”的英文原文和“标准”的中文译文抄录于下，并对译文略作点评：

    The Florence Nightingale Pledge

    I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully.

    I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.

    I will do all in power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.

    “标准”译文如下：

    余谨以至诚，

    于上帝及会众面前宣誓：

    终身纯洁，忠贞职守。

    勿为有损之事，勿取服或故用有害之药。

    尽力提高护理之标准，慎守病人家务及秘密。

    竭诚协助医生之诊治，务谋病者之福利。 

    谨誓！

    这篇译文不文不白，在语言风格上不可取；尤其在当代是要给广大护士诵读或背诵，更应以现代汉语书面语翻译。此外译文有几处明显错误：

    1、“余谨以至诚”，英文中无此意。“谨”用得也不当，汉语“谨”是恭谨之意，而英文solemnly，是“庄严”意，在中文也常用“庄严”修饰“宣誓”。不知译者为何不取。

    2、“忠贞”是形容词，不能作动词用，应改为“忠于”。

    3、几处“勿”都为误用。“勿”意为“不要”，如“勿念”、“请勿吸烟”，都是用来劝止对方不要做某事。查任何一本词典，“勿”也没有“不”的意思。

    4、“有损之事”，对象不明。

    5、“取服或故用有害之药”，对象完全颠倒。按现中译文的意思，成了护士“取服或故用”。原文的意思非常清楚，是不给患者拿取或故意给患者使用有害药物的意思。

    6、“标准”应为“水平”。“标准”是规定性的，往往是别人制定的，护士应该按照某项标准要求自己；“水平”则是通过自己的努力提高自己，达到一个新的高度。

    7、“慎守”句与原文不符。原文的意思是，护士往往保留着病人的私事，也往往知道病人的家事。因此护士出于职业道德，应该替病人保密。

    8、“福利”用得不对，“福利”多指物质的。这里的welfare实指“福祉”，《现代汉语词典》中注为“幸福”。然也！

    有鉴于此，我建议相关部门应当重译《南丁格尔誓言》。这里，我不揣浅陋，提出自己的译文（恳请方家不吝指正）。今又逢5月12日护士节前夕，我愿将此译文献给令人尊敬的护士们。

    在上帝面前，在全体与会者的见证之下，我庄严宣誓：

    一生坚守清白，忠于职守。

    弃绝一切伤害和有损他人之事，不给患者拿取或故意给患者使用任何有害药物。

    竭尽全力保持和提高护理水平，对于我所保有之患者私事和我所知之患者的家事，我将严格为之保密。

    竭诚协助医生施治，忠诚地为我所护理的患者之福祉而献身。
