Hello, everybody!  It's good to be here again.

이렇게 추운 겨울에는 할아버지 할머니가 들려주시는 옛날 이야기를 듣곤 했었는데요, 리오라 선생님도 그런 기억 있으신가요?

Well, my parents told me nursery rhymes.
(음, 제 부모님이 동요를 불러주셨어요.)
* nursery rhymes: 운율을 맞춘 동시/동요

They would tell me a nursery rhyme to maybe put me in a better mood if I was crabby, or crying, or not being the best little girl I could be.
(제가 심통이 나 있거나 울거나 기분이 좋지 않을 때 기분을 좋게 하기 위해 동요를 불러주시곤 했어요.)
* crabby: 심술이 난, 심술 사나운

And that usually kind of got me out of that whiny crabby mood.
(그러면 저는 울적하거나 심술 났던 것이 없어지곤 했어요.)

[영어 표현]
A nursery rhyme is a children’s song that rhymes.
(‘nursery rhyme’은 각운을 맞춘 동요입니다.)

잘 알려진 전래 동요들이 많이 있지요?  가장 잘 알려진 전래 동요 몇 가지만 들어보시겠어요?

There're many many popular nursery rhymes.
(아주 잘 알려진 ‘nursery rhyme’들이 있습니다.)

Some of my favorite ones were “Five Little Pigs,” “Pat-A-Cake, Pat-A-Cake,” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” and “Humpty Dumpty”.

제가 좋아하는 동요/동시는 ‘Five Little Pigs (다섯 마리 아기 돼지)’ ‘Pat-A-Cake, Pat-A-Cake’ (토닥토닥 케이크를 만들어요)’ ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (반짝 반짝 작은 별)’ ‘Humpty Dumpty (험티덤티)’ 등입니다.

Those are my favorites. (제가 좋아하는 동요들입니다.)

그럼 동요 중 하나 소개해 주시겠어요?

Well, I'll do the Five Little Pigs. And this is something that my dad did.
(음, ‘다섯 마리 아기 돼지’를 소개해드리죠.  이것은 제 아버지가 하셨던 겁니다.)

이 내용은 “This Little Piggy”로도 알려진 ‘nursery rhyme’입니다.

And he always did with my little toes, my big toe and my little toes. (제 아버지는 제 발가락을 가지고 하셨어요.)

Just picture yourself with your little toes in front of me.
And I'm gonna start with big toe.
(제 앞에 여러분의 어린 발가락을 내놓고 있다고 상상을 하시기 바랍니다.  제가 엄지발가락부터 시작할게요.)

This little piggy went to market.
(이 아기 돼지는 시장에 갔어요.)

This little piggy stayed home.
(이 아기 돼지는 집에 있어요.)

This little piggy had roast beef.
(이 아기 돼지는 쇠고기 구이를 먹었어요.)

This little piggy had none.
(이 아기 돼지는 아무것도 못 먹었어요.)

This little piggy cried “Wee, wee, wee, wee!”
All the way home.
(이 아기 돼지는 집에 오는 동안 계속 “엉엉엉엉” 울었어요.)

And at the end I probably want to tickle you or tickle your feet, the bottom of your feet, or tickle you somewhere and that would get you laughing.
(그리고 나서 마지막에는 발바닥이나 다른 곳을 간질여서 웃게 만들지요.)

So, that was one of my favorite ones.
(그것이 제가 좋아하는 동시/동요 중 하나입니다.)

리오라 선생님한테도 손주들이 있죠?

I have grandchildren, but they are all older now. But when they were little, I used to play with them and tell them nursery rhymes.
(손주들이 있습니다.  그렇지만 이제 모두 자랐어요.  하지만 아이들이 어렸을 때 제가 그 아이들과 같이 놀면서 ‘nursery rhyme’을 불러줬어요.)

어떤 ‘nursery rhyme’을 불러주셨나요?

The Five Little Pigs. That's one of the ones I used.
( ‘다섯 마리 아기돼지,’ 그것이 제가 불러줬던 것들 중 하나입니다.)

Humpty Dumpty was probably one that I talked to them about, too.
(험티덤티도 제가 이야기해줬던 것들 중 하나였던 것 같습니다.)

요즈음도 미국 어린이들은 전래 동요를 많이 부르죠?

Yes, nursery rhymes are still popular, and many children still love to hear and have you sing along and have you play along with them.
(네, 동요는 아직도 많은 사람들이 좋아하고, 많은 아이들이 여전히 즐겨 듣고 함께 노래 부르며 같이 즐깁니다.)

And it's a good way to get children to learn things and to help develop their vocabulary, and get them to in some cases talk and to count or do the alphabet and do their counting skills.
(아이들이 사물을 배우게 하고 어휘력을 늘려주는 좋은 방법이기도 하며, 어떤 경우에는 말하기, 숫자 세기, 알파벳을 익히고, 숫자 세는 능력을 길러주기도 합니다.)

그리고 ‘Humpty Dumpty’라는 동요도 유명하지요?  영국 전래 동요인데요, 미국에서도 잘 알려져 있는 동요입니다.

Let me tell you the words to Humpty Dumpty.
I'm not going to sing it though.
(험티덤티 가사를 말씀 드릴게요.  그렇지만 노래를 부르지는 않을 겁니다.)

Humpty Dumpty
sat on a wall,
(험티덤티가 담장 위에 앉아 있었네.)

Humpty Dumpty
had a great fall.
(험티덤티가 심하게 추락했네.)

All the King’s horses,
And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty
Together again.
(임금님의 모든 말들과 부하들은
험티를 다시 맞춰놓을 수 없었네.)

험티 덤티가 무엇이죠?  사전을 보면 영국의 전래 동요에 나오는 담장에서 떨어져 깨진 달걀처럼 생긴 땅딸보, 부서지면 원래대로 되돌릴 수 없는 물건이라는 의미가 있다고 되어 있는데요.

Humpty Dumpty was really a very powerful cannon that was used during the English civil war in the 1600’s.
(험티덤티는 1600년대 영국 내전 당시 사용되었던 아주 강력한 대포였습니다.)

And it was mounted on top of a big wall, and it was supposed to defend the city.
(그 대포는 큰 성벽에 설치되어 있었고, 도시를 방어하는 역할을 하도록 되어 있었던 것이었습니다.)

And the church tower was hit by the enemy, and the tower was blown apart.
(그런데 교회 탑이 적들의 공격을 받아 산산이 부서졌습니다.)

And it caused the cannon to tumble to the ground.
(그로 인해서 대포가 땅바닥으로 떨어졌습니다.)

So, the king's men tried to mend the cannon, but they couldn't put it all together.
(그래서 왕의 부하들이 대포를 수리하려고 했지만 원래대로 고쳐놓을 수가 없었습니다.)

그렇게 해서 동요가 생겨난 것입니다.  1600년대에 생겨났습니다.  그러니까 서양 전래 동요에는 역사적 배경이 있는 것도 있군요?

It does.  That's one of the popular nursery rhymes. But probably not many people know the history behind that.
(그렇습니다.  그게 가장 유명한 동요 중의 하나입니다.  그렇지만 아마도 많은 사람들이 그 동요의 배경에 있는 역사를 아는 사람은 많지 않을 겁니다.)
