1. Hexagram Qian / Double Heaven(중건천). ䷀ ......8.
▣Yong-gu(Nines in all lines) : Seeing a flight of dragons without a leader is auspicious.
[Explanation]
Look at the group of dragons. It is auspicious if they have no leader
(or if one sets aside their ego / head).
[Commentary]
Anyone who acts boastful and full of themselves anytime,
anywhere proves that their own spirit is rotten.
Just as seeds sown in a field must be buried beneath the soil to sprout,
a truly great person must be able to blend in among the masses to attain the Way
of the Noble Person(군자의 도).
Understanding only this secret of the pairing of Yin and Yang(음양) allows one to grasp
the true reason why "dragons discard their heads."
Indeed, Musu(无首,무수 - 'having no head / headless') is the ultimate keyword
to understanding the true Way of the Sovereign(君王之道,군왕지도).
Yu Seong-ryong′s discourse on "Gyeon-gun-ryong-mu-su"(Seeing a flight of dragons
without a leader) is the absolute highlight.
For instance, in August 2009, when former U.S. President Clinton secured the release
of two journalists detained in North Korea and subsequently demonstrated humble conduct,
it was a truly spiendid, "headless"(Musu) act.
Thus, Confucius shouted to those "dragons"(Gyun-ryong), saying :
"When utilizing the virtue of heaven(天德,천덕), it is best to keep your head unseen
One must not act as the leader / head]."
He compared this to the simple rule of farming(農法,농법) :
when Yang(陽,양) is sown as a seed between heaven and earth,
the seed itself must remain unseen beneath the soil.
Even the Jesuit Father Pantoja once noted that "ripe fruit is never seen by the roadside."
However, Dongpo(Su Shi) understood that the phrase "a group of dragons appearing
without a leader is auspicious" signifies that all six line positions(位,위) have transformed.
He noted that Yong-yuk(Sixes in all lines) follows the exact same principle,
referringto the complete transformation(全變,전변) of the Qian hexagram(乾卦,건괘)
into the kun hexagram(坤卦,곤괘).
Dasan(Jeongg Yak-yong) likewise viewed Yong-gu(Nines in all lines) as the transition
from the heavy heaven / Qian Hexagram(重天乾,중천건)
to the Heavy Earth / Kun Hexagram
Just as a divine dragon may show its tail but keeps its head hidden,
the Way of heaven delights in transormation―such that there is never a time
when thenfour seasons and all creation are not changing.
He noted that thiss passage specifically highlightshow the /Ching(Book of Changes)
centers primarily on change and transformation.
On the other hand, dragons possesssing the virtue of Heaven(天德,천덕)
never contend over the position of leader(首長,수장).
Whether one becomes a leader or not is already determined by the Mandate
of Heaven(天命,천명), so one need only follow ;
yet because human nature fails to do so, regret always overflows.
In support of this view, Nan Huai-chin offered the commentary that Yong-gu represents
"thetrue attitude of a leader facing histiry and their era―one who uses
the 'Nine'(九,구 -the active Yang principle) without being dragged around by it,
handling affairs objectively regardless of the times."
In the Zuo Zhuan(Spring and Autumn Annals), when Cai Mo,
the Grand Historian of the State of Lu, answered using dragons as a metaphor
(in the 29th year of Duke Zhao of Lu), he ZStated :
Qian to Gou) : "A hiddeen dragon; do not act(Submerged dragon, do not act).
Qia tobTongren) : 'A dragon appearing in the field"
(Dragon preennt in the fields)
Qian Dayou) : "A fiying dragon in the sky"(Flying dragon in the heavens).
Qian ro Guai) : "An arrogant dragon will have regrets"
(Soaring / Arrogant dragon brings remorse).
Qian to Kun) : "Seeing a group of dragons without a leader is auspicious"
(Flight of dragons without a head brings good fortune).
Kun to Bo) : "Dragons fight in the wild'(Dragons battle in the wilderness).
Master Zhu(Zhu Xi) also remarked that Yong-gu(Nines in all lines) refers to the case
where all six lines og the Qian hexagram undergo transformation.
In conclusion, Confucius expounded :
"Governing the world with 'Oian-yuan Yong-gu'(the supreme Yang principle of the Qian hexagram) means ruling all under heaven [天下治也,천하치야].
Thus, carefully examining the truth of Heaven′s Law [乃見天則,내현천즉] to understand
and realize the Way of heaven is the most essential matter."
For this reason, the judgments of the / Ching(Book of Chahges) are not only a study
of the Noble Person who understands heavenly secrets and divine mandates to act
in harmony with those moments, but can also be defined as a divine act that reveals
the true Way [顯道神德行,현도신덕행].
As a side note, when King Zhou(Duke of Zhou) explained the Line Texta(爻辭,효사),
he was concerned that students of / Ching might focus solely on fortune-telling ;
thus, he specially reminded them within the Qian Hexagram that the teachings
do not stop at mere divination.
Confucius, when interpreting the / Ching(Book of Changes) primarily through
Moral Principles(義理,의리-Yili), asserted a perspective that is no different.
Zhang Shuangping, in his metaphysical interpretation of "Yong-gu :
Gyeon-gun-ryong-mu-su-gil"(Nines in all lines : Seeing a flight of dragons without a leader
is auspicious) found in the Silk Manuscripts of the / Ching recently unearthed at
Mawangdui, wrote :
"In East Asia, summer brings thunder and lightning accompanied by heavy rain and whirlwinds,
which ancient people believed to be the appearance of dragons.
Out of fear and reverence toward the object of their worship,
people bowed their heads or presseed their ears close to the ground, not daring to look up.
Because they could not see the dragon′s head, an auspicious sign of seeing a dragon
without its head was recordedd whenever rain, wind, thunder, and lightning struck."
For refernce, let us briefly examine Seongho′s theory on the numbers 7 and 8 as
Substance(體,체-Che) and 9and 6 as Application / Function(用,-Yong),
along with Liu Bei
