Glastonbury’s 5G Precautionary Principle Faces a New Test September 2026
Glastonbury’s pioneering approach to 5G is back in the spotlight.
A new proposal for a 22.85-metre 4G/5G mast at Thomas Way Industrial Estate has prompted residents to ask whether Glastonbury Town Council’s previous precautionary commitments should now be put into practice.
The planning application is currently being considered, with public comments invited until 23 September 2026.
In 2019, Glastonbury Town Council established a 5G Advisory Committee to examine concerns surrounding 5G and its rollout. Following six months of investigation, the Council unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations, including calls for:
🔹 A Parliamentary inquiry into the safety of 5G 🔹 Independent research into reported non-thermal effects of RF-EMF exposure 🔹 Research into Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) 🔹 A review of ICNIRP guidelines
The committee’s 115-page report reflected a precautionary approach, highlighting areas where it considered further research and scrutiny were warranted.
Now, with a new 4G/5G mast proposal before the Council, that precautionary approach faces a new test.
