8. Alliance / Union(Su Ji Bi / Hexagram 8)
▣ Nine in the fifth line : Manifesting union.
The king uses three drives in hunting, losing the game ahead.
The citizens are not warned; good fortune.
[Explanation]
Nine in the fifth line [九五,구오] helps union to be clearly manifested [顯比,현비].
When the king hunts by surrounding game on three sides,
he lets the game flying toward him live; the citizens are not terrified, bringing good fortune.
[Commentary]
It help so that light shines forth [顯比,현비] and everyone under heaven comes to know it.
Because Nine in the fifth liine [九五,구오] is the sole Yang line(陽爻,양효) that is strong and centered,
If private, self-serving desires were to take control, it could invite envy and jealousy
from the other Yin lines(陰爻,음효).
Therefore, the king used the 'Three Drives Rule(三驅法,삼구법)' in hunting.
"Without harboring personal bias toward outer matters,
if one acts alongside righteous minds, none will be missed.
The principle of the 'Three Drives Rule (三驅法,삼구법)' is that if a beast turns around and runs
toward oneself, it is released [失前禽,실전금]; if it turns its back and flees, it is shot and captured,
because loving that which comes and hating that which leaves is prevented.
Therefore, when hunting always letting go of the game that runs toward oneself is a way
to prevent the state from falling into peril at the top line[上五(상오) / throne]."
Understanding is enriched through Seongho's (星湖,성호) Yeokgyeong Jilseo(役經秩序,역경질서)
and Wiam's (韋庵,위암) Juyeok Cheonseol (周易天說, 주역천설).
Dasan's(茶山,다산) interpretation is also clear : "Because the law of the king lones all creation,
that which comes toward a person is accepted."
"The 'Three Drives Rule(三驅法,삼구법)' is the etiquette of the king's hunt.
It corresponds to 'The King's Thrice- Granted Orders[王三錫命,왕삼석명]' in the inverted hexagram,
Ji-Shui- Shi(地水師,지수사 / Hexagram 7).
When a bird flies toward a person, it is moving in the reverse/opposing direction(逆,역).
Reverse (逆,역) here means welcoming (迎,영).
Whenit flies away, it is going in the forward/favorable direction(順,순),
and forward means pursuing.
Since the inside of Su-Ji-Bi(水地比,수지비 / Hexagram 8) is completely empty,
it takes that which comes.
Bucause the ancient king's law rests on loving all creation, a bird flying toward a person
in surely young, whereas a bird turning its back and flying away is surely cunning.
Therefore, it abandons that which comes to welcome it, and captures that which flees away.
Furthermore, Dasan quotes the Moshi Zhuan( 毛詩傳,모시전) and explains as follows:
"Game whose face was damaged by freezing was not offered in sacrifice.
Becaus hitting the left flank and penetrating the shoulder blade was considered the highest
etiquette(軍禮,군례), game coming directly from the front was not shot.
This is what is meant by discarding what comes toward you and taking what flees away.
In other words, those who surrendered were not killed.
Also, in military law. the front guard [前鋒,전봉] drives from the front,
the second guard [次前,차전] drives repeatedly, and the rear guard [次後,차후] drives from behind.
That the king drives three times is becaus the Son Of Heaven, in his etiquette,
did not greedily seek to capture game, and thus did not surround all four directions."
Therefore, why would any citizrns be terrified or fearful [
Since anti-factions who opposed closeness just for the sake of opposing were removed,
the way of such a king is rightful, leading to good fortune [吉,길].
The various theories above are based on Confucius's commentary as follows :
"That manifesting union brings good fortune is becaus its position is correct and central.
Accepting only those who yield to the hunt while discarding those who turn in reverse
to chase after you, and letting go of those who come straight toward you,
means the citizens are not terrified because the leader uses appropriate principles
in governing and forming close bonds."
Confucius's commentary states : "Manifesting union brings good fortune because the position
is correct and central, Accepting those who yield to the hunt while discarding those who turn
in reverse to chase after you, lets go of those who come straight toward you
This applies when the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) changes into the Zhong-Di- Kun Hexagram
Hexagram 2).
As Jeong Yak-yong(정약용) noted, "Leaving one direction open as an escape route
and letting go of those who flee is also supported by other interpretations."
And in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian(史記, 사기),
regarding the 'Three Drives(삼구몰이) :
"Praying, 'Let those who do not follow my orders enter my net,'
is also known as ;Tang's Prayer / Net of Tang(成湯祝網,성탕축망)."
The conclusion of the 'Three Drives Rule(三驅法,삼구법)' is that if someone approaches
seeking closeness, seeking help, or offering assistance, you welcome and help them.
It also means appointing them to live together and striving together for the nation.
Why would anyone forcefully hold onto someone who turns their back and leaves?
Even during a hunt, those who turn back to return to you are not killed.
In the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄, 조선왕조실록), it is also said :
"Regarding the 'Three Drives Rule(三驅法,삼구법),' 'Manifesting Union(顯比,현비),
and 'Seeking Union with the Wise (顯比,현비), if the king clarifies the principle of seeking
closeness, all under heaven will naturally draw close to him."
A true ruler(君道,군도) must naturally eliminate selfish motives.
