This may describe affection and it may bring us a warm feeling, but it is not a true and accurate description of love.

Have you ever been driven to do something for God not because you felt that it was useful or your duty to do so, or that there was anything in it for you, but simply because you love Him? Have you ever realized that you can give things to God that are of value to Him? Or are you just sitting around daydreaming about the greatness of His redemption, while neglecting all the things you could be doing for Him?

I'm not referring to works which could be regarded as divine and miraculous,but ordinary, simple human things-things which would be evidence to God that you are totally surrendered to Him.Have you ever created what Mary of Bethany created in the heart of the Lord Jesus? "She has done a good work for Me.“

There are times when it seems as if God watches to see if we will give Him even small gifts of surrender, just to see show how genuine our love is for Him. To be surrendered to God is of more value than our personal holiness. Concern over our personal holiness causes us to focus our eyes on ourselves, and we become overly concerned about the way we walk and talk and look, out of fear of offending God."...but perfect love casts out fear.."once weare surrendered to God(1 John 4:18).

We should quit asking ourselves, "Am I of any use?" and accept the truth that we really are not of much use to Him. The issue is never of being of use, but of being of values to God Himself. Once we are totally surrendered to God, He will work through us all the time.

■ You may be stranded in a hospital room, a jail cell, a country far from home, or your own inner prison. No matter where you are, or how long you’ve been there, God’s mercy and kindness can reach you. Because He is God Almighty (Ex. 6:3) and present everywhere (Jer. 23:23-24), He can protect, promote, and provide for you when it seems no one else can help.

Your presence and power even when we are not where we want to be in life. Remind us

to reach for You when no one else can reach us.

■ God is present—even when we feel He is absent.

■ (당신을 어둠 속에 놓으시면 침묵하고 주님의 말씀에 귀 기울이세요.) Sometimes God puts us through the experience and discipline of darkness to teach us to hear and obey Him. Song birds are taught to sing in the dark, and God puts us into “the shadow of His hand” until we learn to hear Him (Isaiah 49:2). "Whatever I tell you in the dark..."-pay attention when God puts you into darkness, and keep your mouth closed while you are there.

Are you in the dark right now in your circumstances, or in your life with God? If so, then remain quiet. If you open your mouth in the dark, you will speak while in the wrong mood—darkness is the time to listen. Don’t talk to other people about it; don’t read books to find out the reason for the darkness; just listen and obey. If you talk to other people, you cannot hear what God is saying. When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you a very precious message for someone else once you are back in the light.

If there is only delight, I question whether we have really heard God at all. We should experience delight for having heard God speak, but mostly humiliation for having taken so long to hear Him! Then we will exclaim, “How slow I have been to listen and understand what God has been telling me!”

■ (주님의 음성을 듣지 못한 수치심을 가지는 것은 주님의 선물입니다. 그 후로 마음의 강퍅함을 가지지 않게 됩니다.) And yet God has been saying it for days and even weeks. But once you hear Him, He gives you the gift of humiliation, which bring a softness of heart-a gift that will always cause you to listen to God now.

Every fact that the disciples stated was right, but the conclusions they drew from those facts were wrong. Anything that has even a hint of dejection spiritually is always wrong. If I am depressed or burdened, I am to blame, not God or anyone else.

Dejection stems from one of two sources-I have either satisfied a lust or I have not had it satisfied. In either case, dejection is the result. Lust means "I must have it at once." Spiritual lust causes me to demand an answer from God, instead of seeking God Himself who gives the answer. What have I been hoping or trusting God would do? Is today “the third day” and He has still not done what I expected?

We look for visions from heaven and for earthshaking events to see God's power. Even the fact that we are dejected is proof that we do this. Yet we never realized that all the time God is at work in our everyday events and in the people around us. If we will only obey, and do the task that He has placed closest to us, we will see Him. One of the most amazing revelations of God comes to us when we learn that it is in the everyday things of life that we realize the magnificent deity of Jesus Christ.

■ God is present—even when we feel He is absent.

■ We don’t serve Jesus for the rewards. When He died for us on the cross, He did far more for us than we deserve. Loyalty to Him is an act of worship that expresses our loving gratitude for His love toward us. In return, He delights to encourage us with the assurance that ultimately His rewards will outweigh whatever we have given up for Him.

■ Manuel Gonzalez was the first rescue worker to reach the 33 miners trapped for 69 days in a Chilean mine explosion in 2010. At great risk to his own life, he went underground more than 2,000 feet to bring the trapped men back to the surface. The world watched in amazement as one by one each miner was rescued and transported to freedom.

■ The Bible tells us of an even more amazing rescue. Because of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, all of mankind is trapped in sin (Gen. 2:17; 3:6,19; Rom. 5:12). Unable to break free, everyone faces certain death—physically and eternally. But God has provided a Rescuer—Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Everyone who accepts the free gift of salvation offered through His death and resurrection is freed from sin’s grip and its resulting death penalty (Rom. 5:8-11; 10:9-11; Eph. 2:1-10).

Personal holiness is an effect of redemption, not the cause of it. If we place our faith in human goodness we will go under when testing comes.

■ (우리들 자신의 성결함을 추구하는 열망이 주님을 알기위한 갈망보다 더 클 때 그리스도인들은 실패합니다.) As along as our eyes are focused on our own personal holiness, we will never even get close to the full reality of redemption. Christian workers fail because they place their desire for their own holiness above their desire to know God.

■ (‘나의 더러운 환경 때문에 속죄를 해야 한다고 말하지 마세요, 나는 먼저 나의 환경이 나의 마음에 흡족하고 난 후에야 그리할 수 있습니다’라고 말하는 것은 주님의 복음이 당신에게 닿지 않았다는 것을 의미합니다.) “Don’t ask me to be confronted with the strong reality of redemption on behalf of the filth of human life surrounding me today; what I want is anything God can do for me to make me more desirable in my own eyes.” To talk that way is a sign that the reality of the gospel of God has not begun to touch me. There is no reckless abandon to God in that.

■ Does it bother you to see how much attention is paid in today's culture to people who stand for all the wrong things? Perhaps it is entertainment stars who get the headlines while espousing immoral philosophies in their music, movies, or programs. Or it could be leaders who openly thumb their noses at right-living standards.

오늘날의 문화에서는 그릇된 것들을 대변하는 사람들에게 관심이 집중되는 것이 거슬리지 않습니까? 그들은 어쩌면 음악이나 영화, TV 프로그램에서 부도덕한 인생철학을 옹호하며 헤드라인을 장식하는 연예인이거나, 아니면 올바른 삶의 기준을 공개적으로 무시하는 지도자들일지도 모릅니다.

■ While it is right to be "salt and light"(Matt. 5:13 -14) in this tasteless, dark world attempting to

counter sin by reflecting Jesus' light wherever possible we cannot let negative forces cause us to live in anger and wrath (Ps. 37:8). Instead,

we must rely on God to have the ultimate say about evildoers: "They shall soon be cut down like the grass"(v.2). Beyond that, we should

take David's approach: (1) "Trust in the Lord, and do good." (2) "Feed on His faithfulness." (3) "Delight yourself also in the Lord." (4) "Commit your way to the Lord." (5) "Rest in the Lord"(vv.3-7).

살맛이 안 나는 어두운 세상에서 “소금과 빛”(마 5:13-14)이 되어, 어디서나 가능한 한 예수님의 빛을 비추어 줌으로써 죄와 맞서 보려고 애쓰는 것은 옳은 일이지만, 다른 한편으로 부정적인 힘들이 우리로 하여금 화나 분노 속에 살도록 내버려두어서는 안 됩니다(시 37:8). 그것 대신 우리는 행악자들에게 최후의 말씀을 하시는 하나님에게 의지해야만 합니다. “저희는 풀과 같이 속히 베임을 볼 것이며 푸른 채소 같이 쇠잔할 것임이로다”(2절). 그 외에도 우리는 다윗의 접근 방식을 따라야 합니다. ■ We may not like what we see and hear from some aspects of society, but remember this: God is in control. Trust Him to do what is right. And don't fret.

When you buy a nice piece of jewelry, it is often tucked into a setting of black- or dark-colored velvet. I think it’s designed that way so that your attention is immediately drawn to the beauty of the jewelry. If the packaging were highly decorated, it would compete with the beauty of the treasure.

귀한 보석을 하나 사게 되면, 그것은 대개 검정색이나 짙은 보라색의 부드러운 천으로 된 포장 속에 감싸여 있습니다. 보석의 아름다움이 우리의 시선에 확 들어오도록 그렇게 디자인된 것이라고 생각됩니다. 만일 포장이 아주 화려하게 장식되어 있다면, 그 포장이 보석의 아름다움을 가리게 될 것입니다.

It reminds me of Paul’s comments about the ministry of Jesus through us, when he said, “We have this treasure in jars of clay” (2 Cor. 4:7 niv). It’s easy to forget that we are the packaging and His work is the treasure. So we adorn our jars of clay, taking credit for the things we do to serve Christ.

이것은 우리를 통해 행하시는 예수님의 사역에 대해 말하면서 바울이 “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니”(고린도후서 4:7)라고 말했던 것을 생각나게 해줍니다. 우리는 우리가 포장이며 예수님의 사역이 보화인 것을 잊기 쉽습니다. 우리는 그리스도를 섬기는 일들로 스스로 인정받음으로써 우리의 질그릇을 장식합니다.

We seek to bring glory to ourselves when we’ve forgiven someone, or shown mercy, or given generously. The problem is, when we start seeking affirmation and praise for good deeds, we compete with the brilliance of the treasure of God working through us. 누군가를 용서했을 때, 또는 자비를 보이거나 넉넉히 베풀었을 때 우리는 스스로에게 영광을 돌리려 합니다. 문제는 우리의 선행에 대한 인정과 칭찬을 구하기 시작할 때, 우리는 우리를 통해 일하시는 하나님의 보배의 광채를 가리게 된다는 사실입니다.

When we do things for Christ, it’s not about us but about His glory. The less obvious we are, the more brilliant He becomes. Which is why, Paul says, the treasure has been put in jars of clay so that God would be the one to be glorified. Besides, since when are jars of clay significant? It’s what’s inside that counts!
