Kite — By Jung Ha-sun
On the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, I watch children flying kites over the barley field. Suspended in the void by a single thin thread, my current self is rewound back to my childhood by the reel held in their hands. A life spent carving paths in the sky with every unwinding, chasing dreams through weary days and swaying in the wind—my entire life hung dangles from that single kite string. The warmth of my mother's rough hands as she starched the thread to make my life resilient. The silent, steadfast hope of my father who strove to teach me how to soar high.
A dragon kite with brilliant scales. A noble kite, white and refined like a scholar. A shield kite painted with the Taegeuk symbol. An eagle kite soaring with wide wings. A stingray kite swimming on trembling thin wings. Kites of different thoughts and shapes float and flutter in the open sky.
When the string, coated with crushed glass, had to cut and be cut in a precarious path; when I lost my balance and plummeted, struggling trapped in a jujube tree; when I rejoiced in flying smoothly on a favorable wind while watching other kites fall by the wayside; when I met fierce winds and spun uncontrollably; when I looked down at useless things and learned too much of what was better unknown, enduring the cold wind that gouged my heart, bearing it through a hollow hole in my chest.
On unexpected, breathless days lodged like gallstones in the blue sky, as I briefly shaded my eyes from the blinding sunlight, I watched kites cut their own strings and drift far away, leave in defeat, or softly vanish into the unseen—leaving days where my heart was drenched in sorrow.
As the moon gradually fills my heart, I too must head down the path taken by the kites that left, as if taking away the misfortunes of those who remain.
If only I could carry a single pouch of flower seeds to the earth, following the joyful cries left by the geese returning to their homeland in line.

Interpretation & Critical Commentary
Childhood Memories and Filial Devotion: Looking at a kite floating on a single thin thread, the author recalls their youth. The memory of a mother who painstakingly starched the thread to make her child's life resilient, alongside the steadfast devotion of a father who strove to teach how to fly high, serves as the foundational strength that enabled the author to endure life's turbulent winds.
Joys and Sorrows of Life & Fierce Survival: The diverse shapes of the kites (dragon, scholar, shield, eagle, stingray) symbolize unique human lives and dispositions. Just as kite strings coated with crushed glass cut and get cut, the poem vividly depicts the emotional highs and lows of human existence—moments of precarious competition, sudden setbacks (getting caught in a jujube tree or spinning in fierce winds), and deep empathy for others.
Acceptance of Mortality & A Graceful Departure: The sorrow felt while watching kites snap their strings and drift away evolves into a mature reflection on preparing for life's final chapter. Embracing the end of life not as a tragedy, but as a natural release that wards off misfortune for those left behind, the piece concludes with a profoundly resonant image: leaving behind a humble, beautiful legacy—a single pouch of flower seeds—like wild geese returning home.
