(Critique)

(Critique)

Wild Geese at Deokryang Bay

- From Gangjin

-

By Jung Ha-sun

To live for a season, until my shoulders ache,

I flew through cloud paths where few would dare to tread,

Quickly sensing the wind washed by Deokryang Bay, I circle down.

Leaving the high, empty paths of the sky behind,

I fold my wings tightly and lie down in peace,

Knocking on the field’s door with a "kkirurook," asking for rest.

The reeds warm a long-neglected room with a roaring fire,

The green barley fields spread out a straw mat for welcome,

Even a few fallen grains become a feast for someone.

Though living with red feet in the muddy wetland,

Sometimes floating peacefully on the clear water,

If I soar into the sky again, will I look like a flying flag?

2Even when winter flies away and spring arrives,

My heart suddenly aches, and I cry out "kkiruk-kkiruk."

A pointillist painting hung on the wall whispers the meaning of Bugimi* (附驥尾).

*Bugimi: A classical idiom referring to attached flies traveling a thousand miles on the tail of a noble steed (Dasan Jeong Yak-yong); symbolizing reaching great heights under the guidance of a great master.

Les Oies Sauvages à la Baie de Deokryang

- Depuis Gangjin -

1. English Translation of Commentary and Critique

Commentary

This sijo reflects the long, arduous journey of a wild goose arriving at Deokryang Bay in Gangjin, projecting onto it the life of exile, profound academic achievements, and relationships with disciples of the great scholar Dasan Jeong Yak-yong.

Stanzas 1–2 (Arduous Journey and Arrival in Gangjin):

Flying through "cloud paths where few would dare to tread" until one's "shoulders ache" recalls Dasan’s exhausting journey into exile after enduring harsh political trials. Leaving behind the "high paths of the sky" (the court politics and power in the capital), the goose folds its wings, lies down peacefully, and knocks on the field's door (reminiscent of Saeui-jae or Dasan Chodang) to ask for rest.

Stanzas 3–4 (Embrace of Gangjin and Coexistence with the People):

The reeds, green barley fields, and fallen grains in Gangjin represent the warmth of the local people who welcomed the exiled scholar, as well as the practical, populist philosophy Dasan cultivated there. Despite the harsh realities of exile—living with "red feet in the muddy wetland"—he floats serenely on the clear water of deep learning, soaring once more into the sky like a "flying flag" of hope and spirit in Korean history.

Part 2 (Dasan as the Noble Steed and Bugimi):

Even as seasons change and winter gives way to spring (symbolizing the end of exile and the passage of time), the aching resonance in the heart evokes the lasting echoes of Dasan’s teachings. Here, the key idiom Bugimi (附驥尾—a fly traveling a thousand miles by clinging to the tail of a swift horse) serves as a metaphor for the humility and gratitude of Dasan’s disciples in Gangjin. Guided by their great master (the noble steed), they reached high academic horizons and learned the deeper truths of life.

Critique

Transcending a mere landscape poem depicting nature, this sijo is a refined literary masterwork that seamlessly weaves the historical life and philosophy of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong into the traditional, elegant rhythm of the sijo form.

Gangjin’s Deokryang Bay serves as the symbolic cradle of Dasan’s scholarship. Through the goose's flight and calls, the poet visually evokes Dasan's noble character—a scholar who never relinquished his passion for learning and love for the common people despite the despair of exile. The stark contrast between the "muddy wetland" and the "green barley fields" dramatically illustrates how Dasan transformed the tragic reality of his banishment into a profound spiritual and intellectual triumph.

Most notably, the placement of the classical idiom Bugimi in the final verse is brilliant. Like a pointillist painting, it vividly engraves the zeal of the Gangjin disciples who traveled a thousand miles by holding fast to the tail of their master, expressing deep gratitude and humility for viewing the world from the shoulders of a giant. Through the imagery of the wild goose, the poet quietly yet powerfully illuminates the enduring legacy of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong and the noble bond between master and disciple.
