Curriculum Vitae
Looking at other people’s resumes,
Reading through their listed histories,
I think, What a great person this must be.
With so many achievements,
They must have contributed so much.
What about the path I have walked?
There is nothing to write down.
Not causing trouble for others,
Not stealing what belongs to others,
Living day by day like this,
No matter how much I think, there is nothing to write.
Ah, wait—there is plenty I have stolen.
Claiming to farm,
I tricked the sunlight to steal rice and barley.
I tricked the sea to steal the fish in the water.
I stole the flesh of cows, pigs, wild grapes, and persimmons.
I tricked books to steal their words.
Should I write myself down as a thief, then?
If I cannot be chosen for lack of a resume,
Even King Yama might not choose me.

Curriculum Vitae

Commentary
This poem demonstrates a journey from self-mockery—felt while comparing the speaker's humble life to the glittering resumes of others—to deep ecological and philosophical reflection. Although the speaker possesses no impressive titles or credentials by societal standards, a shift in perspective occurs. By describing everything enjoyed freely from nature and the world—sunlight, fish, crops, and knowledge—as items "stolen," the poem arrives at a paradoxical realization: human existence itself may fundamentally rely on the grace of nature and others, akin to an act of theft. The final lines add a playful touch, suggesting that even before King Yama (the ruler of the Underworld), the speaker stands with humility and self-awareness rather than worldly accomplishments.
Literary Critique
Jung Ha Sun’s "Curriculum Vitae" offers a quiet critique of society’s obsession with prestige, echoing a profound resonance that prompts reflection on the origin of existence.
In a modern world that worships grand credentials and achievements, the poet subverts conventional values through the honest confession, "There is nothing to write down." The twist that follows elevates the poetic depth. Rather than stopping at a simple declaration of a selfless life, the speaker sensitively points out that the very act of living requires constantly taking from sunlight, the ocean, flora, fauna, and cumulative wisdom (books). This metaphor of a "sacred theft" moves beyond human-centered thinking to reveal deep shame and gratitude toward nature and the world. The closing lines—bringing in King Yama to transform self-deprecation into humor—show that the essence of life lies not in a flashy resume, but in the humility that grounds us.

Commentaire
