8. Alliance / Union(Su Ji Bi / Hexagram 8)
▣ Six at the top : Seeking union without a head(leader) Misfortune.
[Explanation]
Six at the top [上六,상육] forms a faction with petty people and associates closely,
only to suffer losing their head(beheaded), which brings misfortune.
[Commentary]
The head of the person with whom one formed a close bond flies off [比之无首,비지무수].
This is the retribution for Six at the top [上六,상육] secretly colluding with line 3,
a person unfit to associate with.
Line 3 was a hardcore rebellious anti-faction that could not seek closeness with the ruler,
Nine in the fifth line [
Dong-pa(東坡,동파 - Su Shi) also stated the following :
"To have no head means having lacked sincerity in usual interactions.
Trying to seek closeness only after reaching a desperate corner, how could it not be ominous?"
Confucius commented, "That the head of the person with whom one associated was beheaded
means failing to preserve lifee to the end
Here, the top line [上爻,상효] is not someone capable of forming a proper bond,
nor is he an object of resspect worth getting close to,
so where could he find anyone to build a true relationship with?
He is an affectionless, petty person without a single shred of worth to be close to,
never to be looked back upon.
This applies when the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) changes into the Feng-Di- Guan Hexagram
Hexagram 20).
Historically, Li Si(李斯,이사), who contributed most to helping Qin Shi Huang unify
the written language and perpetrating the burying of books and burying of scholars,
went all-in on wealth and glory after Qin Shi Huang's death by falling under the sway
of the eunuch Zhao Gao(趙高,조고).
However, due to Zhao Gao's false accusations, he was framed for treason and ended
his life by being executed―cut at the waist alongside his son in the marketplace.
This is good historical example of the terrible misfortune of 'seeking union without
a head' (比之无首,비지무수).
The final passage written in Sima Qian's Biography of Li Si(李斯列傳,이사열전)
in the Records of the Grand Historian(史記,사시) is no different :
Li Si governed the ebtire realm, yet did not strive to remedy the ruler's flaws.
Even while holding high rank and official salary, he flattered, compromised dishonorably,
and harmonized servilely.
He consistently relied solely on strict orders and harsh punishments.
Furthemore, following the wicked words of Zhao Gao(조고), he took the lead in deposing
the eldest son, Fusu(부소), and establishing the younger son, Huhai(호해).
He attempted to debate only after the feudal lords had all turned their backs on him,
but by then it was already too late.
People said that if Li Si(李斯,이사) had exercised sound judgment,
his achievements could have placed him in the same ranks as the Duke of Zhon(주공)
or the Duke of Shao(소공).
Regarding 'without a head / no leader [无首,무수], Cheng Yi(정자) made a severe remark :
"If the way of close intimaccy is good from the beginning, its end will also be good;
but if the beginning is bad, there is no way the end canbe good."
He also stated, "Six at the top [上六,상육] represents the end of one who failed to act properly
when first establishing closeness, resulting in a rift at the end."
"Living life through impoverished study, if one sees the Buddha but fails to hear the teachings
of the Dharma, even after facing eighty thousand kalpas,
one cannot escape falling amply into voidness/extinction[空亡,공망].
Moreover, through false practice one claims to have climbed atop Mount Virochana
[毘盧頂上,비로정상], yet in truth failed to correspond to the genuine place;
it is like a crab suddenly dropped into boiling water[湯水,탕수].
From the Shui-Lei-Zhun Hexagram(水雷屯卦,수뢰준괘 / Hexagram 3) to the Su-Ji-Bi Hexagram
(水地比卦,수지비괘 / Hexagram 8), all contain Kan[坎,감].
Kan [坎,감 - ☵] obtained the middle line [爻,효] of Qian [乾,건 - ☰], and this is precisely
the wondrous wisdom [妙慧,묘혜] of the Middle Way [中道,중도].
However, as its merit turns into pitfall [陷,함] and danger [險,험], how could dualistic,
relative nature [二性,이성] exist alongside the great sea of affictions the great sea
of afflictions [煩惱大海,번뇌대해] and the Saha world of suffering [娑婆苦海,사바고해] ?
Furthermore, from ancient times to the present day, worries and afflictions [
have arisen, and peace and comfort [安樂,안락] have never failed to vanish;
hence the Four Noble Truths [四諦,사제] begin with suffering [苦,고].
and Buddha removes the Eight Sufferings [八苦,팔고].
Suffering [苦,고] is that which brings fear and anxiety, afflictions are stirred,
whereupon fundamental wisdom [種智,종지] manifests.
How could the intent of the Sage's hexagram sequence [序卦,서괘] not be truly profound?"
