How to get to the 「Eidetic Reduktion」in the figurative paintings
Kim Young-jai(Ph. D., Art philosopher)
Transparent and profound paintings of Yu Jin-sun well represent the spiritual qualities of the art in figurative paintings, rather than that of abstract art which Wassily Vasilyevich Kandinsky(1866-1944) had pursued in his writing, namely 「Über das geistige in der kunst」.
Yu's paintings are done in most elaborate manner, however, strangely enough, they provide profound aesthetic sentiment, even pictures taken, or printed on catalogues. What is the mysteries of her art?
First of all, the impression comes from transparency. Brilliant flowers, clean waters, even foggy mountains reveal the inner soil and the tree roots. One of the transparent landscapes, the Naerincheon river scene- located at the Eastern part of Korean Peninsula-most efficiently uncovers the natural reflection by means of close observation and meticulous techniques.
All of the Yu's paintings provide a feeling of transparent depth. In General, neither installing the raw colors nor carbon black on canvas apt to be fallen into the poor-looking when the works are done. However, Yu would overcome the dilemma in terms of lucid consciousness.
With picture of mild contrast, medium tone of the reflection from the real, some highlight dots would shine the picture. What is more, the minimized black color patch would be supported to be brilliant, otherwise the result destined to be shabby or poor-looking.
Transparency of the Yu's paintings, therefore, not comes from that of pigments, but from subtle contradiction of the colors, that is, well organized combination of the pictorial effects. However, the transparency not only found in Yu's paintings, but also innate in the nature.
Next, weighty feeling could be found in Yu's paintings, even most brilliant pictures, probably because the artist's most keen appreciation, evaluation of the motives, and meticulous brushwork enable the motives get a rebirth on the picture plane.
Most vivid, vital forces of life in the nature, some of them comes from memories of the early days, from childhood to the college graduate, would be drawn with live impression.
Years passing by from the hard days of youth, however, the reminiscence of the times became purified by means of purifying herself, as she should be identified with the paintings.
However, the motives used to be listed in so far as the vital forces are verified by none other than herself. Such as flower of the garden portulaca and sulphate of soda were adopted not only by their vital forces, but also passing the judgement, i. e., aesthetic appreciation, of the artist.
Having proved to be qualified, most motives need a considerable time to be settle down in the artist's mind, eventually to be exploded as transparent and weighty works. One of the pictures dealt with cherry blossom near a Buddhist temple grabbed and enchanted her, and force to be regular visitors-by her husband's ride- almost every spring. As a result of the long years of precipitated impression would be easily transferred to the viewers.
The full blossom of the cherry flowers once again come into full bloom in her paintings with fluttering petals of the cherry flowers, like butterflies, which represent the most prime time of the cherry blossom.
The bright cherry blossoms apt to be drawn most brightly on the canvas, however, the weighty impression as we see in the nature might be difficult to be reproduced in most cases. However, the accumulated time on the canvas, by means of condensed impression would enable to catch two rabbits, i. e., to get most brilliant effect and weighty impression simultaneously, as we see from Yu's paintings.
Thirdly, the profoundity comes from subtle handling of the perspective. As we see from the motive of the white and yellow roses, eyesight moves outwardly, that is, not confined in the pictorial plane, as a result of restricted raw colors, complete perspective, and magical combination of the colors.
Foreground scene in the paintings, there are roses with warm-feeling colors, while the fence at middle scene is painted in achromatic colors, however, the scenes never invade other's boundary.
Again, the background also keep the position as background never invading foreground and middle scene, as it were, leaving darker tones and milder textures of the trunk and leaves of the roses at background.
Refer to the previous described cherry blossoms by Yu, the handling of the motive show some similarities and differences as the 「Rouen Cathedral(1984)」 by Claude Monet(1840-1926). The similarities come from abundant canvases for the same scene, while the differences comes from time, impression and ways to paint. Monet simultaneously had drown the cathedral on several canvases by means of time interval, while Yu combined verified impression and techniques from subsequent canvases on the specific canvas, later proved to be most profound picture among cherry blossom pictures.
So called pointillism, in this case abundant dots than usual, on the paintings amplify the so called 'depth frequency' of the pictures.
Most of the motives can be represented as dots, such as a great duckweed, sulphate of soda, blossom of golden bell, wild camomile and hydrangea. In addition, the glistening light on the water surface could be represented as dots on the plate. However, larger objects, such as house and wall etc., and some of largest objects, such as color patches could be identified as large dots in Yu's paintings.
The dots are, however, not only found in the objects, but also background. Refer to aesthetic theory, if specific dots are condensed in a certain part of picture, the eyesight of the viewer apt to be confined in between the dots. As a result, the blocking eyesights prevent a spontaneous appreciation of the artworks, partly because of the logical intervention.
Yu's dots free the stream of sentiments and consciousness by means of diffusing eyesight, double focus, and perhaps unfocusing declared by John Cage(1912-1992), and enable to prevent the possible disorder of pictorial disposition.
So called self-sufficiency in this case, the paintings illustrate as many episodes as the number of dots. For instances, the hydrangea motif finally turned into painting after taking impression on the way to the mountain temple.
Wild camomile flowers were painted because they were collapsed on the field. Sulphate of soda flowers were taken as a motif because the flowers were bloomed as they like. And in a remote village alley, she pick up the motives of ballon flower and balsam flower at random, just because they were not tamed by hands of the village people.
Thus, establishing the pictorial order from picked up random objects should be done by experts as far as expression techniques are concerned, however, it is no easy to get the techniques, with no close observation or identification with the objects. In an attempt to be identified with the random objects, Yu used to make pilgrimage throughout the country almost half of the year.
To satisfy the inner appreciation in terms of the natural mind, the inner mind should be self-sufficient, as natural order seemingly in disorder, or rather chaotic.
For instance, on the way to the up-country in the eastern county of Korea, she found a magnificent composition in a heavy stormy snow.
In the picture, the diagonal, zig-zag composition is roughly divided into two color patches; upper one is darker, lower one bright, so that the eyesight moves from left lower corner to right upper corner where the viewer meet snow-covered cottage. Then the eyesight moved to the upper left corner through the semi-bright snowy steep mountain slope, however, the eyesight destined to escape from the pictorial surface because of the gradated value of color patterns.
It is none other than the most formal composition obviously introduced in the school text, however, meeting that sort of most elaborate composition in a certain situation should be followed after the mind-opening and observation of the artist.
Thus we reach to the most significant point in the artists remarkable individuality. However, it is one thing to satisfy both self-sufficient pictorial order and transparent pictorial effect, specifically among a number of figurative painters, and it is another to communicate with the viewers in terms of natural order rather than composition, color, texture, and color combination.
However, it is one of the easiest task in Yu's painting. because the lucid consciousness and techniques to satisfy transparency, weight, depth, and perspective are nothing but the returning to the nature, of the chaotic order in an apparently well represented pictorial order.
