


PENANG on Monday night celebrated the 228th anniversary of Fort Cornwallis, in what is being called one of the biggest birthday bashes of the year.
Thousands come to toast to the health of the iconic 18th century fort that had drawn innumerous visitors over the centuries.
The anniversary was celebrated with a variety of events and programmes at the Esplanade, here.
The fort was festooned with colourful lights and the visitors given neon sticks and balloons.
Stage performances include cultural dances, sand art demonstrations and acrobatic shows.
Visitors were also treated to a fireworks display that lit up the night sky — a fabulous show which was photographed and video recorded by those in attendance.
The bian lian, the ancient Chinese art of face-changing, which was performed by a duo from China, kept the audience mesmerised, as did the magicians with their fascinating prestidigitation.
Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng launched the celebration.
They also cut a cake to mark the event.
The crowd also paid their respects to the passengers of the Malaysian Airlines flights MH370 and MH17.
Built by the British East India Company in the 1786, the fort was named after the late 18th century Governor-General of Bengal, India, Charles Marquis Cornwallis.
The original fort was build of nibong by then Penang Governor Sir Francis Light. The island was given to him by the Kedah Sultanate.
Fort Cornwallis is currently the largest standing fort in the country. Despite its role as a fort, it has never witnessed a battle in its history.
