9. Wind over Heaven : Small Restraint.
◎ So-chuk(Small Restraint) signifies a hot and humid time when it does not rain from the sky.
It is like a young monarch who is weak and inexperienced, needing the assistance of a regency.
During the time of So-chuk, the monarch must halt all affairs and focus absolutely
on building competence and strength for their coming time.
One must cultivate their capabilities so that when their own timearrives in the future,
they can bring down rain for the people and all living things.
▣ "Small Restraint is prosperous [brings success].
Dense clouds gather, yet no rain falls from our western outskirts."
[Explanation]
So-chuk is prosperous.
Dense clouds gather, yet no rain falls; I offer sacrifices in our western suburbs.
[Commentary]
So-chuk(小畜,소축) carries the meanings of saving/storing, nurturing, stopping, and holding back.
In Pung-cheon-so-chuk(Wind over Heaven), a single Yin line prevents five Yang lines from
advancing further, meaning that the five Yang lines are being nurtured by the single Yin line.
That is, the lower three Yang lines are being nurtured,
while the upper two Yang lines are restrained from going any further.
Confucius's View on Do-chuk(소축 - Small Restraint) :
"The smoothness/ prosperity of So-chuk comes from the single 4th Yin line gaining
a docile position [柔得位,유득위], responding to both upper and lower lines,
thus attaining smooth execution
The virtue of the So-chuk hexagram[卦德,괘덕] is being internally strong/resolute
and externally gentle/docile
The 2nd and 5th lines, maintaining their central positions,
carry out their will with strength
By illuminating the intention clearly [离,리], even though it is So-chuk,
in reaches smooth fulfillment [乃亨,내형].
Therefore, although 'dense clouds gather, yet no rain falls'[
going forward is still valued and esteemes
In other words, thougn the time to shower rain upon the world has not yet arrived,
one must advance with a firm yet even more gentle and resspectful attitude.
On the other hand, the phrase 'From my western outskirts' [自我西郊,자아서]―referring
to staying in the weatern suburbs and offering sacrifices―means that I have not yet
achieved complete So-chuk, and becaus it is still So-chuk, virtue has not yet been
broadly bestowed upon the world [施未行也,시미행야].
As Confucius's commentary [彖曰,단왈] points out, only when the magnaimity
of Yang(陽,양) is present can one break free from 'dense clouds but no rain [密雲不雨,밀운불우]'
so that rain may finally fall.
Dongpa(Su Shi / 東坡,동파) also spoke of rain coming as follows :
"Whenever Yang bestows upon Yin, rain is formed."
However, knowing that the strong man (☰,건 - Qian) is reluctant to accept favors
from an older woman (☷,곤 - Kun), he feels suspicious and hesitates,
stepping back to stay far off in the west.
Even so, if there are clouds but no rain falls, where will they ultimately go?
Before long, the rain will surely fall.
Just as dense clouds foretell rain, it promises that rain will inevitably come.
This is compared to King Wen of Zhou(文王,문왕) exerting effort when his time had
not yet come, or the historical episode of Duke of Zhou(周公,주공)
raising King Cheng(成王,성왕), the young son of King Wen.
Zhu Xi also noted :
"Dense clouds [密雲,밀운] represent Yin ,
and the western outskirts [西郊,서교] also represent the direction of Yin."
When King Wen studied the I Ching while imprisoned in Yuli [
he realized that Qizhou [岐周,기주] lay in the west.
This represents knoeing that the time was not yet mature.
It is like Yi Yin(伊尹,이윤) raising the young king Tai Jia (太甲(태갑),
or Duke of Zhou(周公,주공) enthroning the young King Cheng (成王,성왕) to govern the state.
Zhu Xi also advises that during the period of So-chuk :
"Do not complain or resent [不怨不憂,불원불우], but practice self-restraint and discipline
[自養,자양], quietly cultivating oneself to achieve smoothness.
Do not seek quick results or superficial success."
It is said, "This is like governing the world through worldly laws[世法,세법] yet failing to gain
the submission of the Youmiao tribe[有苗,유묘] [來格,래격] ;
like upholding Buddha's teachings [佛法,불법] yet not having the Demon King [魔王,마왕]
submit ; and like practicing contemplation of the mind [觀心,관심] yet being biocked [阻滯,조체]
and failing to attain contemplative wisdom [觀慧,관혜]."
It also states, "When a sage leads the world, how could they shun foolish people?
WhenTatthagata(Buddha) delivers sentient beings, how could he hate or doubt demons?
And how could one fear and shrink back in advance,
expecting obstacles in mind contemplation?
For instance, one cannot stop a running car with a fist-sized rock,
nor can a struck bell remain silent.
A blade grows sharp when ground, and even if a pig rubs against a monntain of gold[
its brilliance only ahines brighter.
When snow and frost [ 雪霜,설상] are added upon frost [加霜,가상],
the pines and cypresses [松柏,송백] stand out even more extraordinarily―is this not why
it is prosperous [亨,형] ?
However, though there is nothing to fear at this time, it ls like 'dense clouds,
yet no rain [密雲不雨,밀운불우]' coming 'from my western outskirts [自我西郊,자아서교]'.
One must know that rain will fall only after waiting for the harmony of Yin and Yang[
Generally, when clouds rise from the east, it easily turns into rain ;
when they rise from the west, it is difficult for rain to form.
Hold the I Ching[易,역] in high regard.
It points out that King Wen's way of conducting himself was just like this .
The testimony in the Classic of Poetry [詩經,시경] was also like this :
"O valley wind, gently blowing and rustling !
Only a valley wind blowing from the east brings the rain."
When it turns cloudy, rain seems imminent, but the rain ritual prayer[
written by King Jeongjo during the time of 'So-chuk no rain[小畜不雨,소축불우] touches
the heart, and Yangchon's (Gwon Geun) 'Mil-un-bul-u [密雲不雨,밀운불우] is also noteworthy.
