DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(OC): And finally, some great news about middle age and how to stay sharp. New research about baby boomer brainpower from ABC's Lisa Stark.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): The middle age brain is, well, more brainy then we thought it was.
PATRICIA COHEN (AUTHOR OF "IN OUR PRIME"): There's been this revolution in thinking about the brain.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Patricia Cohen is the author of a new book about midlife age 40 to 65.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(OC): I'm middle aged. What is my brain great at?
PATRICIA COHEN (AUTHOR OF "IN OUR PRIME"): Verbal ability should be at high now. Vocabulary is one of the things that keep on improving, financial skills, financial assessment, management, that's at a high.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Dr Gary Small agrees. He studies the aging brain.
DOCTOR GARY SMALL (DIRECTOR OF UCLA LONGEVITY CENTER): When we reach middle age, there's a sweet spot where our brains cells are actually firing more rapidly than they do when they're younger.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(OC): Here's one of the reasons why. If you take a closer look at the brain, the cells are constantly communicating, with the help of an insulation called myelin. That myelin thickens and peaks around middle age, meaning messages in the brain travel faster.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): That allows the brain to solve complex problems more quickly and accurately. What does that mean in terms of everyday skills?
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Well, memory peaks around age 45.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Financial planning skills at age 53.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Vocabulary not until your 60s or 70s. But how best to stay sharp? The answer may surprise you. It's exercise.
DOCTOR GARY SMALL (DIRECTOR OF UCLA LONGEVITY CENTER): It will get your heart to pump nutrients and oxygen to your brain cells. Chemicals will cause those brain cells to actually sprout out and communicate to each other more effectively.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Also critical what you eat and how you feel.
DOCTOR GARY SMALL (DIRECTOR OF UCLA LONGEVITY CENTER): You want to eat a brain healthy diet with fish, nuts whole grains. You want to manage stress. Chronic stress will shrink your brain cells.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): So take a brisk walk and then relax.
PATRICIA COHEN (AUTHOR OF "IN OUR PRIME"): Your brain is really at the top of its game.
LISA STARK (ABC NEWS)(VO): Now, doesn't that ease the mind? Lisa Stark, ABC News, New York.
