Before selfies, artists painted self-portraits. The paintings captured the artists' feelings and moods. Rembrandt's self-portrait depicts him as an accomplished artist. He often used dark and gloomy colors in his paintings. Rembrandt painted about one hundred self-portraits during his life. Gustave Courbet painted himself as a desperate young artist. His wide-open eyes show his worry. The third self-portrait is by Sofonisba Anguissola. It depicts the artist as a proud woman. She holds a book in her hand. By depicting herself this way, she wanted to show us her abilities.
