It’s good to be with you again.

리오라 선생님, 오늘은 어디로 가볼까요?
We're going to go to Salt Lake City, Utah.

소금 호수의 도시, ‘Salt Lake City’, 유타 주의 주도 솔트레이크시티를 찾아가 보겠습니다.
바닷물보다 짠 소금물이 커다란 호수를 이루고 있는 ‘Great Salt Lake’가 있는 도시라고 해서 붙여진 이름이지요.  ‘Great Salt Lake’가 있는 유타 주의 북부지대는 소금으로 인해서 전체가 눈으로 덮인 것처럼 온통 하얗지요.

이 ‘Great Salt Lake’의 동남쪽 언저리에 ‘Salt Lake City’가 있는데요, ‘Salt Lake City’는 기독교의 한 교파인 모르몬교로 잘 알려져 있지요.

Salt Lake City is the home of the Mormon Church.
(솔트레이크시티는 모르몬 교회의 본산입니다.)

The Mormon Church is also called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
But it's more commonly referred to as the Mormon Church.
(모르몬교회는 ‘말일성도 예수그리스도교회’라고도 불립니다.  그렇지만 보다 일반적으로는 모르몬교회라고 합니다.)

Many times you'll see especially men, and they always wear black suits and white ties, I mean, white shirts with a black tie.
(종종 검은 양복, 하얀 와이셔츠에 검은 넥타이를 맨 사람들, 특히 남자들을 볼 수 있습니다.)

가끔씩 길거리에서 말끔하게 정장을 차려 입은 신사들이 둘 씩 짝을 이루어 다니면서 선교활동을 하는 모습을 볼 수 있지요.

They many times knock on your front door and try to give you little information in a little pamphlet about the Mormon Church.
(그 사람들이 종종 현관문을 두드려서 모르몬교회에 관한 작은 책자를 가지고 종교에 대해 알려주려고 합니다.)

And it always seemed to happen right about when it was time to sit down and eat dinner or right when you were in the middle of something.
(그리고 앉아서 식사를 하거나 다른 일을 하고 있을 때 항상 그러는 것 같습니다.)

Usually it was bad timing.  But they were trying to inform people about what the church represented and tried to convert people to join the church.
(일반적으로 아주 시간을 잘 못 맞춥니다.  그렇지만 그들은 사람들에게 자신들이 다니는 교회에 대해 사람들에게 알리고 사람들을 개종하여 교회에 다니게 하려고 노력합니다.)

Yes, there's a lot of Mormons that do live in Salt Lake City.
(솔트레이크시티 사는 모르몬 교도들이 아주 많습니다.)

모르몬교 신자들은 커피나 탄산음료수를 마시지 않고, 담배도 안 피는 걸로 알고 있습니다.  

There're certain traditions that Mormons believe in.
(모르몬 교도들이 믿는 특정 전통이 있습니다.)

And I think the caffeine and coffee is something that they don't partake in.  And of course they don't drink alcohol.
(그들은 카페인과 커피를 마시지 않습니다.  그리고 물론 술을 마시지 않습니다.)

They follow the Book of Mormon.
(모르몬 교도들은 모르몬 경이라는 성경을 사용하지요.)

다른 교파와 해석을 달리하는  부분들이 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다.  그리고 모르몬교 하면 태버내클이라는 곳이 유명하죠?  

태버내클은 예배당인데요.  대형 파이프오르간과 실내 음향 설계가 잘 되어 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

They have a large organ, and it's very beautiful to listen to them sing.
(커다란 오르간을 가지고 있고 합창단원들이 부르는 노래는 무척 아름답습니다.)
* organ: 여기서는 파이프 오르간 (북: 관풍금)

파이프 오르간은 북한말로는 ‘관풍금’을 말합니다.

Because of the acoustics in the Tabernacle it's been said that if you drop a pin, you can hear it all over at the Tabernacle.
(음향장치 때문에 태버내클에서는 핀을 하나 떨어뜨려도 그 소리를 태버내클 전체에서 들을 수 있습니다.)

It's very, very beautiful to listen to the choir sing.

Salt Lake City is the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

It's very traditional to watch different like Christmas Eve or Easter service, church service that are broadcast from the Mormon Tabernacle.
(모르몬 태버내클로부터 중계되는 크리스마스 이브나 부활절 예배를 지켜보는 것은 전통입니다.)  

종파가 다른 사람들도 이 모르몬교회 합창단의 연주를 즐겨 듣는군요?

Different denominations still like to listen to the choir because of the beautiful voices and beautiful music.
(아름다운 목소리와 아름다운 음악 때문에 다른 교파의 사람들도 여전히 그 합창단의 연주를 듣기를 좋아합니다.)

‘Mormon Temple’이라는 모르몬 교회당도 관광지가 되고 있습니다.  

유타 주에도 가 볼만한 곳이 많지요?

Some of the places that you might want to go to when you visit the state of Utah would be the Bryce Canyon, which has beautiful red rock and landscapes.
(유타 주를 방문할 기회가 있을 때 가볼 만한 곳은 브라이스 캐년입니다.  아름다운 붉은 바위와 풍경을 가지고 있습니다.)

And it's in the Southwest portion of Utah, and the Zion National Park.
Those are both located in the Southwest portion of Utah.
(그리고 브라이스 캐년은 유타 주 남서부 지역에 있으며, 자이언 국립공원이 있습니다.  둘 다 유타 주의 남서부 지역에 있습니다.)

Sequoia National Park is neighboring to the state of California,
(세쿼이아 국립공원이 캘리포니아 주와 이웃하고 있습니다.)

In the north portion of Utah there are some beautiful Bear River Mountains and the Golden Spike National Historic Site.
(유타 주의 북부 지역에는 아름다운 베어리버 산맥과 골든스파이크 국가지정 사적지가 있습니다.)

Park City is part of Utah, and that's a very famous ski, snow skiing resort area.
(파크 시티는 유타 주의 일부로서, 아주 유명한 스노우스키 리조트 지역입니다.)

I have a friend that owns the condominium there and goes there skiing.
(저는 거기에 콘도미니엄을 가지고 있으면서 스키를 타러 다니는 친구가 있습니다.)

And they compete with snow skiing industry in the Rocky Mountains quite a bit.
(그리고 그들은 로키 산맥의 스노 스키 산업과 상당히 경쟁하고 있습니다.)

That’s kind of a new trendy place to go instead of going to Colorado and the Rocky Mountains, a lot of people are now going to Park City, Utah and snow skiing there, too.
(그 곳은 새로운 유행의 장소가 되었습니다.  콜로라도와 로키 산맥으로 가는 대신 많은 사람들은 이제 유타 주의 파크 시티로 가서 스노 스키를 합니다.)

예전에 전설상의 거인 폴 버년에 대해 이야기한 적이 있지요?  발자국 하나가 호수를 이룰 만큼 거대한 나무꾼 거인인데 도끼로 그랜드 캐년을 깎아 만들었다는 전설이 있다고 했죠?

Yes, we've talked about Paul Bunyan before.
And there's a famous tourist attraction in Utah that’s called Paul Bunyan's woodpile.
(그리고 유타 주에는 폴 버년의 통나무더미라고 불리는 유명한 관광지가 있습니다.)

And it's really a cluster of lava logs that formed about 30 million years ago.
(그것은 실제로는 3천만년 전에 형성된 통나무모양의 화산암 덩어리입니다.)

The Brigham Young University is named after the founder of the Mormon Church and is located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
(브리검 영 대학은 모르몬교회의 창시자의 이름을 딴 것이며 유타 주의 솔트레이크시티에 위치하고 있습니다.)
