① because이유를 논리적으로 말함. why의 질문에--대한 대답이 됨:

    Why were you sleeping? - Because I was tired. 왜 자고 있었나 - 피곤했기 때문입니다.

② for추가적인 설명이나 판단의 근거를 나타냄:

    I was sleeping, for I was tired. 나는 자고 있었습니다. 피곤했어요.

    It is morning, for the birds are singing. 새들이지저귀는 것을 보니 아침이다(판단의 근거).

   ★맨 나중 문장에서는 구어[적인 문체] 외에는 because를 쓸 수가없음. The birds' song      causes morning. 이라고 할 수가 없기 때문임(Tiredness causes sleep. 라고는 할 수있음). 즉 인과(因果)관계가 역(逆)인 경우에는 for를 씀.

③ as, since이유를 정면으로 설명한다기보다, 부수적으로 말함. 어조상(語調上), 담화적(談話的)인 분위기를 내기 위해서 곁들이는 수도 있음:

As [Since] I was tired, I was sleeping. 피곤해서 잠 좀 자고 있었다.

④ inasmuch as양보적, 다소 변명적 기분이 있음: Inasmuch as I was tired, it seemed best to sleep. (실은 일을 했어야 했는데) 피로했기에 자는 것이 제일이라고 생각됐다.

※if, though, as 따위와 더불어 중요한 종속접속사의 하나인데, 이것들과는 달리 because가 이끄는 부사절은 주절(主節)에 앞서는 경우보다 주절 뒤에 오는 경우가 매우 많다. 그 때문에 종속접속사인데 위치의 점에서는 등위(等位)접속사 for와 동일하게 되어 일견 같은 구문을 취할 때가 많다. 원칙적으로 because는 이유·원인 ‘…이므로, …까닭에’를, for는 판단의 근거 ‘…한 점을 보니, …한 점을 생각하면’의 뜻을 나타내는 것으로 구별되는데, 구어적 문체에서는 for 대신 흔히 because가 쓰인다. 또 because와 for가 의미상으로는 거의 같을 때라도, I like him because he is honest.는 It is becɑuse he is honest that I like him.의 구문으로 바꿀 수 있지만 I like him, for he is honest. 는 그와 같은 구문 변화가 불가능하다.

영어는 같은 구문 어휘를 계속 사용하는 것을 싫어한다. : 여기서 또 한번 제가 잘 못 생각하고 있었습니다. 그냥 필자의 마음대로 바꿔쓰네요. 그러나 꼭 하나만 알아두십시오. Why에 대한 답은 because만 씁니다. 하여튼 정리하였습니다. 비교하면서 읽어보십시오.
