바로크 조각양식을 창조하고 크게 발전시켜 미술사에서 바로크 조각의 독보적인 존재로 거론된다.

베르니니의 미술이론은 전통적인 것이었다. 그는 고대 그리스 로마의 미술을 연구하면서 그것이 자연의 불완전함을 보충해주리라고 믿었다.

그러나 어쩌면 고대 작품들과의 관계를 일부러 과장했는지도 모른다. 베르니니의 스케치와 점토 습작은 대부분 출처를 확인할 수 있는

고대 작품들에 의존하고 있지만, 완성된 작품들은 형태와 주제에서 모두 고대 작품들과는 거리가 멀다.

보존되어 있는 드로잉과 점토 습작 덕택에 그의 제작 과정은 잘 알려져 있다.
베르니니의 양식은 적어도 2대 남짓한 기간에 걸쳐 유럽의 여러 지역으로 퍼져나갔으며, 18세기의 이탈리아 조각은

그의 업적에 기초를 두고 있다. 그러나 그의 죽음과 함께 이탈리아가 유럽의 미술에서 주도권을 차지하는 시기도

끝장나고 말았다. 그는 이탈리아가 마지막으로 낳은 뛰어난 만능 천재였으며, 그의 공헌으로 이루어진 바로크 양식은

이탈리아 양식으로는 마지막으로 국제적인 것이 되었다. 베르니니는 종교적·정치적 절대주의가 지배하는 시대에 살았으며,

뛰어난 지성에도 불구하고 그는 그 세계의 가치를 의심하지 않았다. 베르니니는 아마 그 어떤 미술가보다도

당대의 지배적인 양상을 잘 구현하고 있었으며, 그가 엄청나게 성공한 것은 주로 현상(現狀)을 적극적으로 받아들인

그의 태도 덕택이었다. 그가 죽자 그는 유럽의 가장 위대한 미술가이자 아울러 유럽의 가장 위대한 인물 가운데
