Everest Base-Camp Trek
Itinerary
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,300m / 4,264 ft)
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport you’ll be escorted to the comfortable Nirvana Garden Hotel. After check in - if time permits, you can walk around colorful Thamel. Overnight-stay is at Nirvana Garden Hotel.
Day 02: fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,652m / 8,700ft):
You’ll be driven to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early-morning flight to Lukla (2,800m /9,186ft), a gateway-destination from where your trek begins. After an adventurous 40-minute flight above the breathtaking green hills and white mountains, you reach Lukla airport. This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world, culminating in landing on a spectacular airstrip on a hillside surrounded by high mountain-peaks. You start your trek through the prosperous village of Lukla until you reach Phakding. To assist in your acclimatization, you only have a short hike. However, if you’re interested in additional activities you can take a side trip to a nearby monastery.
Overnight-stay is in Phakding at a tea-house or lodge.
Day 03: Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3,440m/ 11,280 ft): a 5 - 6 hours walk
Winding through a beautiful pine forest, the track leads us along the DudhKoshi River, crossing many suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. You’ll catch a wonderful sight of the glistening Mt. Thamserku (6618m). Through the settlement of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, you come to the check post and entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. You pass through the last village of Jorsalebefore reaching Namche Bazaar. The trail climbs through the forests and bridges until you reach the confluence of the DudhKoshi and BhoteKoshi rivers. After a final steep ascent of about 2 hours you get the first sight of Mt. Everest - peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. At this juncture, you can stop at a Chautara to admire the view. You still need to hike about 1.5 hours to reach Namche Bazaar: agateway to Mt. Everest - and a main trading-centre of this region. Overnight-stay is in Namche Bazaar.
Day 4: Namche Bazaar: Rest-day
This is the first of the two days set aside for "acclimatization". Health experts recommend us to stay active and move around during the rest-day too, instead of being idle. You can either spend the day taking a day's hike to Thame - or visit Khunde - or relax and explore Namche Bazaar itself. NamcheBazzar is the main centre of the Everest-Khumbu-region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery and a colorful market each Friday-evening and Saturday. If you trek a few hundred vertical feet during the day, it will help you to acclimatize properly. Our guide will take you to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park, where you can observe an assortment of things related to the first Everest ascenders, and the Sherpa culture - and learn about the various plant and animal-life of the Everest region.
Day 05: NamcheBazzar to Tengboche (3,870m/ 12,694ft): a 5 - 6 hours walk
After breakfast in Namche you set out towards Tengboche, enjoying a superb view of Mt. Everest - Mt. Nuptse - Mt. Lhotse - Mt. AmaDablam - and a close-up view of Thamserku. Your trek follows a more or less smooth trail with few ups and downs which will not bother you, as the magnificent view of the Himalayas keeps you company throughout the journey. Along the way you can spot a variety of wildlife: musk deer - a herd of Himalayan Thar - and multicolored pheasants. The trail gradually winds down to Kayangjuma. The path eventually reaches Sansa, which is the major trail junction to Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp. The track then winds through the pine forests - and after we cross the prayer-flags-festooned bridge over the DudhKoshi River, we reach PhunkiThenga: a small settlement with a couple of teahouses and a small army-post amidst the alpine-forest. After having a relaxed lunch at PhunkiThenga, you’ll gear up for a slightly tougher climb through the pine forests before you reach Tengboche - which is a great place for close up views of Mt. AmaDablam, Mt Nuptse, and Mt Everest. It also has the biggest Buddhist Monastery of the Khumbu region. If you wish, you can pay a visit to the monastery and witness the ceremony in this principal and popular monastery of the Everest region. Overnight-stay is at a lodge at Tengboche.
Day 06: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360 m/ 14,300ft): a 5 - 6 hours walk
With the majestic mountains as its backdrop, the monastery at Tengboche looks most spectacular in the morning. At this juncture you can take pictures of the monastery and the scenery around, and start the day’s journey in the usual unhurried way. We’ve chosen the upper trail for better views on the way to Pangboche village - and you pass through several Chortens and Mani-walls and small villages. The place where you’ll stop for lunch not only serves delicious food, but also allows a fantastic close-up view of Mt. AmaDablam. In the afternoon you walk north to Pheriche, or take the eastward trail beneath the towering north face of Mt. AmaDablam. From here onwards, the walk is fairly moderate as you enter the Imja Valley. The valley gradually unfolds as you approach the confluence of the Lobuche River. You descend towards the river and begin the last and steepest climb of the day, up to Dingboche. On arrival at Dingboche you’ll see a beautiful array of fields enclosed by stone walls to protect barley, buckwheat and potatoes from the cold winds and from grazing animals. Overnight-stay is at Dingboche.
Day 07: Dingboche - Duglha (4,600 m/ 15,090 ft): a 3 - 4 hours walk
You start the day with a climb to Duglha through the KhumbuKhola valley. The walk along the arid terrace is very rewarding, with awesome views of mountains on all sides. As you come to a yak-herder's place called Dusa, the valley begins to narrow - and you continue through PhulungKarpo: the camp-site of the first successful Everest Expedition in 1953. Above PhulungKarpo is Chola Lake. As you move on, the majestic view of Mt. Pumori (7138 m/ 23418 ft) comes into view. As the trail descends and curves, Mt. Pumori disappears from view, and you come across a roaring stream. After crossing a small wooden bridge, you ascend to Duglha. You can see the tip of Mt. Nuptse from here, as well as Mt. Cholatse, Mt. Thamserku, and several other magnificent peaks. Spending a night in Duglha is ideal for acclimatization purposes. Overnight-stay is at Duglha.
Day 08: Duglha - Lobuche (4940 m/ 16,207 ft): a 2 - 4 hours walk
Beyond Duglha, you’ll climb up the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. You pass through boulder-strewn slopes as you ascend ChupkiLhara, an eerie ridge-top with dramatic mountain views. At the top of the ridge, you’ll find an array of stones with prayer flags, used as memorials to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer) and 10 times Everest-summiterBabuChiri Sherpa (a Nepali mountain-guide) - who perished on his last mission to climb Everest. As the trail drops to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, you’ll find yourself facing several great peaks: Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and MahalangurHimal. You are now in the vicinity of Everest, but the great mountain still remains elusive. Mt Nuptse towers to the right as the trail crosses the Khumbu Glacier. As you pass along a murmuring stream and leave the Khumbu Glacier behind, you’ll now begin to feel a little out of breath due to high altitude. Overnight-stay is at Lobuche.
Day 09: Lobuche - GorakShep (5,170 m/ 16,961ft) - Everest Base-Camp (5,364m/17,594ft): a 8 - 9 hours walk.
The trail to GorakShep goes ahead through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. You pass through the pyramid sign-post. Ahead on the trail you’ll see the crest of the north ridge of Everest, along with Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse, and others. A small ascent will take you to ThangmaRiju, from where you can perceive a 360-degree vista of snowy mountains. Climbing steeply up to the top, through the Changri Glacier, you catch your first glimpse of Kala Patthar: a grey-green knoll beneath Mt. Pumori. As you reach GorakShep, you’ll find snow-capped mountains looming all around you, including the top of the world: Mt. Everest. After a brief lunch and rest, you take the trail to Everest Base-Camp through the once vast GorakShep Lake. Continuing straight ahead you come through the Indian-Army Mountaineers' memorials. Only after you’ve reached Everest Base-Camp can you really appreciate the Everest climbers who brave the hazardous route through the Khumbu Icefall. Mountaineers’ tents stand out in bright colors against the monotony of gray surroundings (especially in the spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori are the mountains you can view from the base-camp. Everest is actually not visible from here. By now you’ve met the ultimate objective of your journey. However, the sunset-view from Kala Patthar is more spectacular than the sunrise-view, so it’s suggested to visit Kala Patthar today during sunset. As the setting-sun's rays strike the snow-capped mountains, the resulting scenery is indescribably beautiful. For those trekkers who wish to continue on to Kala Patthar, our guides and Sherpas can coordinate hiking to Kala Patthar today for the amazing sunset-view, rather than waiting until the next day. Overnight-stay is in GorakShep at a local lodge.
Day 10: GorakShep - Kala Patthar (5545m/18,192ft) - Pheriche (4280 m/14,070 ft): a 8 - 9 hours walk
Today is the climax of your trip. You start early in the morning to catch the spectacular views from Kala Patthar - and witness the first light of day as it caresses the peaks of the mountains, particularly Mt. Everest. However, you need to be prepared for an early morning departure, amid predawn darkness and a cold temperature of minus-10 to minus-14 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, there’s always the possibility of chilly winds, which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse tower to the east, even as Everest begins to reveal itself. During the ascent to Kala Patthar, you can pause to view several breath-taking view-points from where you can take great pictures. After several hours of ascent, you’ll reach Kala Patthar. From Kala Patthar, you can scramble up to the top of a rocky outcrop marked by cairns and prayer flags. A mind-blowing Himalayan panorama unfolds before you as your eyes wander from one mighty massif to another. On returning to GorakShep, you’ll have breakfast, and wait for other participants to return. Those participants who wish to visit Everest Base Camp today will have early breakfast, as the hike to Everest Base camp takes 4 to 5 hours longer than the Kala Patthar hike. Upon returning to GorakShep, lunch will be available. Then you descend in the afternoon, and arrive at Pherichein time to enjoy a good night's rest.
Day 11: Pheriche to Kyangjuma (3,570m/ 11,710ft): a 5 - 6 hours walk
Just after the start of today’s trek, you cross KhumbuKhola (stream). Following the main Everest trail down through the beautifully scenic valley, you pass through the villages of TsuroWog, Orsho, Shomare- and reach Pangboche at the base of Mt. AmaDablam. You cross the bridge over ImjaKhola, and pass through Deboche village to reach Tengboche. You can spend a brief time at Tengboche monastery, and observe its many prayer wheels turning. We cannot explore prayer-altars inside, as the monastery only opens at 3 pm. From Tengboche, a steep descent of about 1500ft/ 500m leads through rhododendron bushes and fir-trees to the DudhKoshi River. You cross the bridge over the DudhKoshiriveragain, which you had crossed on day-5 on your walk to PhunkiTenga. Further on, you pass the village of Tashinga and Sansabefore finally reaching the beautiful village of Kyangjuma. Upon arrival at this juncture, you can appreciate the gorgeous mountains of AmaDablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest! Overnight-stay is at Kyangjuma.
Day 12: Kyangjuma to Monjo [2,840m/9,315ft]: a 4 - 5 hours walk
The trail to Namche Bazaar clings to the steep wooded-slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. While on the trail passing through the forest, look out for wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards, and colorful pheasants. You’ll have enough time in Namche to shop and relax in a bakery that serves coffee and cakes, and provides Internet access if required. A steep descent from Namche Hill leads to the suspension bridge crossing the DudhKosiriver near the confluence of the DhudhKoshi and the BhoteKoshi Rivers. You cross the DudhKoshi River twice at separate locations before reaching Monjo. After exiting from its official entrance near Monjo, you’re out of the Sagarmatha National Park - and finally reach Monjo Village. Not only is Monjoa quieter place to stay than Namche, it also means our porters have a less strenuous walk back to Lukla tomorrow. Overnight-stay is in Monjo.
Day 13: Monjo to Lukla: a 4 - 5 hours walk
You can enjoy the last walk at lower altitude in the Everest region. Most of the trek today is flat, although you’ll have some descents and brief ascents too. Today you can further enjoy a combination of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests - as well as and the Kwangde peak in the distant background. As you walk through the Sherpa villages, you’ll notice an impressive display of faith in Buddhism, and in the cultural practices associated with it: prayer-stones dot the landscape, and prayer-flags flap in the wind. You’ll cross the DhudKoshi River 3 times, crossing suspension-bridges strewn with prayer-flags - and will also cross one of its tributaries once, the ThadoKoshi. The final ascent of about 45 minutes from Chheplung takes you to Lukla, where you can stretch your fatigued legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. Your fantastic trek culminates on a happy note with everyone back safe and sound - and with faces that radiate happiness! If you’re part of a group, this last evening in the mountains is the ideal opportunity to spend some relaxing moments with your whole crew - as the porters will not be accompanying you to Kathmandu. Overnight-stay is at Lukla.
Day 14: Fly from Lukla - Kathmandu
You fly back to Kathmandu after your long mountain-journey. The early-morning flight will drop you off at Kathmandu Airport. After this you can rest and relax throughout the day at your hotel. Overnight-stay is at the Nirvana Garden Hotel.
