Prospects dim for Kim

FORT MYERS -- Sometimes it seems as if he has disappeared entirely, as if the only memory of him is a dressing stall that bears his name: KIM. That, too, almost certainly will be gone soon. And, for that matter, so will Byung-Hyun Kim [stats, news].

Nearly two years after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in what was then perceived as a major trade, Kim is a virtual non-entity these days in the spring training clubhouse of the reigning world champions. Any discussion about the 2005 Red Sox [stats, schedule] pitching staff des not include his name -- Kim has become so irrelevant than he rarely qualifies as an afterthought -- and there has been nary a hint of suggestion that Kim will be with the Red Sox when the regular season begins in two weeks.

By then, Kim almost certainly will have been traded, perhaps to Colorado or Milwaukee, each of whom has interest in the enigmatic right-hander, but only if the Red Sox eat a large chunk of Kim's $6 million salary for this season. Kim could end up elsewhere, though there only a handful of markets that could even consider Kim given the fate that has befallen him in Boston.

Kim was a sensation in many ways, not unlike fellow Korean Chan Ho Park or Japanese pitcher Hideo Nomo. In his first two full major league seasons, Kim struck out 224 batters in 168 2/3 innings, an exceptional average of 11.5 batters per nine innings pitched. At 22, he was one of the blossoming talents in the National League.

He had deception with unbelievable stuff.''

Indeed, while Kim throws submarine style, it was the combination of his delivery and ability that made him remarkably effective. And while his velocity and, consequently, his strikeouts went down as his career progressed, his walks dipped, too.

His ratio of strikeouts to walks was between 3- and 3.5-to-1, precisely the kind of number that appealed to Epstein, who was looking for an anchor to a Red Sox [stats, schedule] bullpen that was in disarray.

On May 30 of the 2003 season, Epstein and Garagiola made the simplest of trades: Sox third baseman Shea Hillenbrand for Kim, a swap of players who had appeared in the previous year's All-Star Game. Many baseball observers believed at the time that Kim had lost something off his fastball, but Garagiola insists he had no incentive to make the trade other than to help Arizona's struggling offense.
``In many respects, that was an old-fashioned baseball trade,'' Garagiola said. ``The Red Sox [stats, schedule] had a perceived need in the bullpen and, with us, Matty (Williams, the team's veteran third baseman) was kind of winding down. Shea was exactly as advertised.''
The Red Sox, too, got what they thought they were getting. Kim went 8-5 with a 3.18 ERA and 16 saves during his first season in Boston, and Epstein, for one, believes the Red pitcher. And despite Kim's struggles late in the year, the Red Sox entered spring training of 2004 with Kim projected as the No. 5 starter in a potentially dominating rotation that also included Curt Schilling [stats, news], Pedro Martinez [stats, news], Derek Lowe [stats, news] and Tim Wakefield [stats, news].

Even in Arizona, there were signs of potential trouble ahead. Teammates reached out to Kim, who speaks little English, only to be rebuffed. Kim slept a lot, so much so that Arizona officials wondered if he had narcolepsy. Sometimes he wanted an interpreter. Sometimes he did not. And through it all, he remained alone, a stranger in a strange world.

But after Kim declined -- time and time and time again -- his teammates did what most anyone would do.Sox would not have made the 2003 playoffs without the pitcher. And despite Kim's struggles late in the year, the Red Sox entered spring training of 2004 with Kim projected as the No. 5 starter in a potentially dominating rotation that also included Curt Schilling [stats, news], Pedro Martinez [stats, news], Derek Lowe [stats, news] and Tim Wakefield [stats, news].

In Arizona, largely because Kim was pitching well, his peculiarities were more tolerable. As would become standard in Boston, Kim would spent hours everyday throwing a ball against a fence or padded wall, working so diligently that club officials felt he was working too hard. They tried to discourage him from throwing so much. They tried to encourage him to add balance to his life. He continued to resist.

He had only baseball, which left him little alternative when things went badly.
``He was a prodigious worker. In fact, it was an issue with us,'' Garagiola said. ``Kim would throw all the time. We'd finish a game and you'd hear this THUMP, thump, thump and he would be throwing in the cage.''

This spring, finally, Red Sox [stats, schedule] officials have had success in getting Kim to back off his workouts. Sox officials believe his fastball touched 90-91 mph in side sessions before exhibition games began, but Kim was clocked between 84-86 mph in the 2 2/3 innings he pitched prior to coming down with the flu.

For what it's worth, Epstein does not regret the trade. He regrets the contract. While acquiring Kim from the Diamondbacks, Epstein made it clear that Kim initially would be used as a reliever. He also began negotiations with Jeff Moorad, Kim's agent at the time, on a two-year, $10 million contract with the idea that Kim would most likely be used as a starter.

Knowing the fragility of Kim's psyche, some Sox officials were annoyed when then-manager Grady Little lifted Kim in the middle of a save situation against the Cleveland Indians [stats, schedule], putting into motion an unforgettable series of events.

Not long after, having already committed so much in negotiations for a contract extension, Epstein did not back of the deal with the pitcher.

He's going to become a better pitcher, a better person and teammate as we go. We're going to look back and say that it was a rocky road but that it was a worthy road.''

His velocity was down considerably -- Sox officials attribute this largely to Kim's unhappiness -- and his desire to play in Boston was destroyed. Kim went 5-6 with a 5.34 ERA at Triple-A Pawtucket and finished 2-1 with a 6.23 ERA for the Sox, and there wasn't a team in baseball that would touch him and the balance of his $10 million contract over the winter.

For the Sox, the choices now are few. Because Kim has at least five years of major league service time, he can reject an option to the minor leagues, though sources indicate he would rather pitch in Pawtucket than risk more failure in Boston. If the Sox release him, they have to pay Kim the $6 million he is due this year. If and when they trade him, they will eat most of the contract and get very little in return.
레드삭스는 김이 메이져에서 최소 5년 이상 활동했기에 마이너리그 옵션을 거부할 권리가 있어 선택 범위가 좁다.

Epstein takes responsibility for all of that, though the Kim signing currently stands as the only significant blunder in his tenure as general manager.

``It's my fault,'' Epstein said. ``It's the responsibility of the club to do everything in its power to help a guy, but in the end not everybody can play in Boston.''
