9. Wind over Heaven : Small Restraint.
▣ Initial Nine : Returning to path, how could there be any blame?
Good fortune.
[Explanation]
[Initial Nine] returns from the path(without going far after leaving home),
so how could there be any fault? It brings good fortune.
[Commentary]
[Initial Nine] uniquely resonates/corresponds with the primary line, the 4th line.
Except for [Initial Nine], no other line corresponds with the 4th line.
Therefore, it naturally returns to its proper path [
In philosophical terms, "Ji-do(自道,자도 - one's own path) represents the state
of ultimate goodness(至善,지선).
It is the realization of heaven-sent nature and the return to one's original
Buddha-nature(自性本來佛,자성본래불).
When returning to one's originalplace, who could possibly blame them [何其咎,하기구]?
In the Hsiao Ch'u(Small Restraint) hexagram, the structure itself is a time whena single
Yin linr at the 4th position nurtures the five Yang lines.
As long as the corresponding [Initial Nine] maintains a strong yet gentle and compliant
attitude and follows properly, there will be no fault.
Dongpa(Su Shi) viewed that the Yin line at the 4th position fiercely nurtures
the young [Initial Nine] to fill it with energy, thereby restoring one's proper path (自道,자도).
Metaphorically speaking, since [Initial Nine] is the only one properly corresponding
with and following line 4, it is like Yan Hui(Yanzi) the "restoring Sage," who finds his own path.
Confucius also highly praised this noble intention, stating :
"Returning from one's own path means its purpose brings good fortune."
Here, '復自道(복자도)' can also be intrepreted as "Correcting and rectifying minor daily habits."
Historically, it is likened to King Wen returning to his daily life and recovering after being
released from the prison of Youli.
If the Small Restraint (小畜,소축) hexagram changes into the Gentle/Wind (重風巽卦,중풍손괘)
hexagram, it signifies an estranged wife returning home.
