I received my SS card with those words on it. But I don't know the meaning of that. Does it mean that I can only use it for work purposes only? What if I want to apply for a credit card or other things can I use my SS number even though it says its only for work? PLEASE help I'm kind of confused.

Actually, it means it's valid for everything except work. you can only work if you have specific authorization from DHS that would normally be in the form of an I-551 card, or Employment Authorization Document, (EAD)

It means that in order to work (legally) you must show some document proving your right to work in US. The number can be used for anything else with no restrictions. You can use it to get a credit card or any other thing that requires a use of your social security number. There really should be a comma between work and only.
Examples of DHS authorization being:
Green Card, Conditional Green Card, US Re-entry permit, US Refugee Travel Document, Employment authorization card, foreign passport with I-551 stamp, foreign passport with a work visa.
Also if you're a citizen, permanent resident, have been granted asylum or refugee status or hold any other sort of permanent work authorized status, you should apply for a new card, which won't have that text.
Not to bring up an old message, but are we completely sure this is accurate? Per the Social Security website - "We issue this type of card to people lawfully admitted to the United States on a TEMPORARY BASIS who have DHS authorization to work."
Why give credit to someone who is "technically" only here temporarily?

It means that if you are getting hired for a job, you can't just show your driver's license and SS card, you would need to show your EAD or Green Card to prove that you are authorized to work.
If you already have a Green Card, go back to the SSA office and ask for a new card without the restriction on it. Thereafter you can get hired for work without having to show your Green Card ever again.
