Shutter is a Thai horror movie directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom. The movie begins with photographer Tun (Ananda Everingham) and a few friends having a get together with copious amounts of alcohol. Later when Tun is being driven home by his girlfriend Jane (Nattaweeranuch Thongmee) they hit a girl standing in the road, they decide to flee the scene.

Tun's photographs begin to be haunted by ghostly images of the girl and he begins to investigate other occurrences of ghosts in photographs. Even though Tun and Jane discover than most ghost sightings in photographic images are fakes or double exposures, they cannot ignore their ghost as it is starting to haunt a lot more than the images.

Tun begins to experience pains in his neck which doctors cannot explain and soon his friends begin to commit suicide one by one. Jane begins to suspect there is more to this haunting than the car accident. The investigation soon leads to a more sinister part of Tun's past life involving a past girlfriend named Natre (Achita Sikamana). They travel to her home to find that Natre's mother is keeping her corpse in a bed, refusing to accept that she is dead. They convince Natre's mother that Natre needs a proper burial to put her spirit to rest, but the hauntings continue.

Looking through some photo's taken in one of the supernatural attacks in Tun's apartment, Jane notices the ghost of Natre looking for something on a shelf. Jane looks in the same place and finds some hidden photos showing the real reason that Natre is terrorising Tun. Natre was raped by Tun's friends whilst he reluctantly photographed the whole episode.

Tun realises the reason for his neck pain and tries to commit suicide himself, but he survives. Will Natre's spirit ever find peace?

This is a very spooky movie. There were quite a few occasions where I nearly stained my underwear (especially when the face in the photo moved!). The movie relies on shocks and scares more than gore and considering both directors are in their early twenties the movie is directed like what you would expect from a seasoned horror movie director. The characters are very well acted and have a lot more depth that you often find in horror movies and the effects are very convincing (although quite reminiscent of Ringu). The suspense and tension are kept high throughout and the ending does not disappoint.

There is a lot of quality Asian horror coming from Thailand and this movie sets the standard just a little bit higher.
