This butterfly is a symbol of hope for the
grandmothers; women who suffered as sexual slaves by the Japanese Army before
and during World War II. Their wish is to be able to feel liberated and fly
away from mental pains. Currently the grandmothers assemble every Wednesday at
noon in front of the Japanese embassy, waiting for apologies from the Japanese
government. However, the Japanese government tries to distort, disregard and
conceal the true horrifying facts of history by saying that the women acted as
autonomous prostitutes. Kwangyoung Girl's High school and South Korea's
publicity department tries to inform as many people as possible and to put
pressure on the Japanese government; to announce official apologies through '1
million people attaching butterfly badges'. All profits from these butterfly
sales are donated.
The Korean Council for the Women Drafted
for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan
/ War & Women's Human
Rights Museum
are heading the donation efforts. Details of donations are as follows: 1) Wednesday
assembly, domestic and international activities, testimony investigation,
educational activities etc. 2) Operate funds. 3) War and History Museum : Which
was opened in 2012 per the grandmothers wishes as a place for children to
study, which took them 9 years to raise the funds. Butterfly Grandmothers
Wonock Kim and Bokdong Kim want to use these funds mainly to help rescue
females who were scarred by sexual violences during wars all over the world.
The first beneficiary was a female from the Congo. Please open your heart to
help spread the word and help these women all over the world. "Korea
was liberated a long time ago, but we are still not liberated in our heart and
souls. We must live with our memories." - Wonock Kim and Bokdong Kim-
